The capitalist extractivist system is inherently violent in that it cannot function without someone's cheap, dehumanizing and (health-)degrading labour. It needs the removal of people from their lands to steal energy resources from them.

Copper is 100% recyclable without loss of quality, but only about one-third of global demand is met through recycling. Recycling copper saves up to 85-90% of the energy required for mining & refining virgin ore, making it a more sustainable alternative.

SCC has a dark past with the worst mining explosion in Mexico and the most critical ecocide with toxic spill in Sonora River Mexico. Tía Maria plans an investment estimated $1,5M. The very high profit margins would not occur if Tia Maria included explicit and implicit subsidies.

The mine is a controversial proposal to be built, by Southern Copper Corporation (SCC) from the USA and owned by Grupo Minero Mexico the second largest copper producer in the world. There has been oposition from local population for 20 years.

The Niger Delta, in #Nigeria, is abundant in biodiversity, natural resources, extensive river systems, and a complex network of communities.

We must stabilize Earth's temperatures by cutting back drastically on our dependence on fossil fuels and restoring the natural carbon sinks. These fires are just a warning sign of worse to come.

Climate scientists have predicted decades ago that extreme events will become more frequent and more intense with climate change and we are now seeing it play out for real. We were all deceived by fossil lies that downplayed how deadly this is.

Climate change contributed to this event due to the flip flop between very wet and very dry conditions and record high temperatures over summer resulting in thick dry vegetation cover providing lots of fuel to burn, as well as by increasing the length of the dry season.

Very wet conditions in early 2024 promoted vegetation growth. But this was followed by record heat in the summer of 2024 in #California. The dry conditions prevailed through the autumn with dry vegetation persisting.

In addition to causing the indirect deaths of millions, Azerbaijan is responsible for the direct deaths of its ethnic minorities.
The persecution of the #Armenian population & restrictions on freedom of speech are serious concerns. Azerbaijan invaded the region of Nagorno-Karabakh, mostly populated by Armenians, in a war that resulted in suspected war crimes and the displacement of > 100k people.

#COP29 president Mukhtar Babayev is once again an #oil executive, having worked in various roles for the #Azerbaijan state-owned oil company #SOCAR since the 1990s. Putting oil executives in charge is nothing short of a sham that undermines our inability to fight back.

COP 29 is a fossil fuel scam
For 30 years the UN COP Climate Conferences have failed to deliver meaningful change. They have served as a ‘talking shop’ with the big polluters given seats at the top table to cast doubt over the sciences and delay meaningful action.
This November’s #COP29 event opens under the same bad auspices of last year. A petro-state – Azerbaijan - once again assumes the COP Presidency.

ALL scientists need to disclose their sources of funding.
We need media to ask the right questions before blindly reporting on industry propaganda. We already lived through this with tobacco and the 40 plus years of muddying climate science needs to end.

Capitalism is deeply undermining the concept of State Sovereignty.

Scientists keep saying that we cannot ramp up fossil fuel exploration but phase out fossil fuels instead. When there is e.g. a new LNG terminal built, who will be protesting there on the ground?
Activists. Ordinary citizens.
We scientists must step down from our ivory towers and join them. There is no scientific evidence that taking action would harm our reputation. It’s our moral duty to provide more pressure to our words and join the climate movement.
