hmm come to think of it, that lack of busyness is an important part of it for me too! because if they were cluttered, or had a lot of motion, they wouldn't feel nearly as calming to me
also I love the thought that NDs are more likely to find them calming. it makes me want to write something about NDs who find a way into extradimensional liminal spaces and just turn them into comfy spots where they can de-stress and unmask while time is paused outside

that is really interesting. first of all it's validating that I'm not the only one who felt that way about liminal spaces, but second of all I wish I could experience what it's like to find them naturally anxiety-provoking/uncomfortable/etc.
like I'm so curious what that's like. I wonder if it just comes from a natural sense of anxiety from feeling isolated, cut off from others
(I personally think that this is a big part of why I find them so calming - because to me they represent being alone, in a quiet place)

I think it's kind of interesting that liminal spaces have become a horror thing
I've loved liminal spaces long before I even knew the term for them, but they always felt strangely relaxing to me. like I found a little forgotten corner of the world where time had stopped and I didn't have to worry about anything
horror is definitely not an association I had ever had with them. but I can't deny that liminal space horror is really effective at building a tense atmosphere
I wonder if the connection between liminal spaces and horror is one that people naturally make, or if it's a connection of two unrelated ideas that took off culturally

okay I looked into this more and this is actually so much worse than it looks because<li>I got the order of the arguments mixed up</li><li>that means that JavaScript was trying to wait for <code>() => { window.location.reload() }</code> milliseconds before executing <code>60000</code></li><li>instead of raising an error about this, it happily accepted these arguments and then raised an error about how <code>60000</code> is unsafe code for me to be executing (that's what this monstrosity of an error message is trying to say)</li>
"yes hello I am going to wait for () => { window.location.reload() } milliseconds please", "and then I'm going to execute the number 60000" - statements dreamed up by the utterly deranged

I'm pretty sure that the point of RPG mechanics is to create a story arc for your character through the game's mechanics. it's always the same story arc every time, though:
your character starts with little-to-no money or power. then they slowly accumulate more and more money and power over time
I have a few problems with this:<li>obviously some games go a little too far when they emphasize my lack of money and power at the beginning</li><li>I don't like the idea of hoarding wealth for my own benefit. I would really like to be able to help others with it, but I've never really gotten this option in a meaningful way in a game before</li><li>I don't like the idea of hoarding power for my own benefit. for example if I have healing magic, I want to be able to use it on people who are sick</li><li>it doesn't feel like my character is getting stronger if the gameplay is functionally the same at every step of the way</li><li>I'm honestly just tired of having this exact same character arc in every game</li>

I honestly think that a *lot* of my problems with ARPGs come from the progression curve being way too tall
because at first I was thinking that I would want to completely remove progression from Skyrim, but I think a lot of great gameplay would be lost that way
even just removing all *combat-related* progression would lose a lot of fun gameplay
I think mostly I just want to know that fighting every enemy (even the final boss) is going to be fair, engaging, winnable, and fun - even at level 1. the difficulty of that fight might vary based on the enemy, but it should never feel like the matchup of my numbers vs. the enemy's numbers is incredibly lopsided (E.G. way too much health or way too much damage)

for me:
it takes a *lot* of effort to understand what the author is trying to communicate to me, in terms of visual/spatial stuff, (and I often just can't :/) so I generally gloss over visual descriptions
if I use a moderate amount of effort I can visualize up to two things (characters or objects) in my head at once, but it's very fleeting and there is almost no detail. it's more like I'm experiencing the general impressions of those objects (general shape and color) instead of really "seeing" them
for example if I visualize an apple, I can "see" the texture of the apple but not the shape, or the shape of the apple but not its texture. I can visualize two apples, but only in very vague fuzzy terms - just two red vaguely apple-shaped objects

don't get me wrong, I would still want it to feel like an uphill battle if all you have is a rusty half-broken sword you found in a tomb, and you're fighting someone in full elven armor with an enchanted weapon

I feel like if I were to start Skyrim modding, the first mod I would want to make would be {sharply reducing all progression relating to health, damage, and defense}
like I would figure out "how many sword-hits should it take to kill someone in no armor? how about leather armor? how about metal armor?" and rebalance everything's health, defense, and damage numbers to match. higher-tier armors of the same type would be marginally better, but the difference between the worst and best armor would only be like 1-2 sword swings' worth of survivability. and higher-tier weapons would exactly cancel out that difference
so the progression-curves of defense, damage, and health would be *drastically* flattened out, so that it would still be satisfying to fight a very very high-level enemy at level 1 with shitty iron weapons

I think one of the coolest things about Hideous Destructor is that despite having a ton of hardcore milsim elements, it's not some greybrown American imperialism simulator
the setting is actually pretty cool (it's Doom), and it's a great excuse to give the player lots of fun scifi tech like remote turrets and energy weapons
which is so much more interesting than playing as an American soldier on yet another generic battlefield and choosing between 17 models of (near-identical) assault rifle
I would really love if there were even one more scifi game with {milsim / tactical shooter} elements, because as far as I can tell Hideous Destructor is one-of-a-kind
although, Receiver 2 is kinda close because it simulates its guns to a ridiculous level of granularity and it takes place in a pretty interesting setting

I really love this game. it's tied with #BrutalDoom for my favorite shooter of all time
also, I realized recently-ish, after watching a Forgotten Weapons video on the H&K G11, that #HideousDestructor's ZM66 was probably inspired by the G11:<li>cookoff problems</li><li>has a very very fast three-round burst, where all rounds are fired before you've felt the recoil of the first round</li><li>caseless rounds are extremely fragile</li><li>jams constantly</li><li>massively overengineered</li>

in #HideousDestructor, I love that the enemies follow the same rules as you do
if you don't down them with an attack, you might've still made them bleed, and eventually they can bleed out
if you downed them, you'd better be careful, because they might still be able to get back up again (just like you can) so remember to double-tap and watch for subtle tells that the enemies are still alive
and, if you're fighting an enemy with armor, you'd better be using something that can pierce through that armor. a shotgun, SMG, or pistol isn't good enough

unfortunately Picard and Discovery were gritty grimdark shock-value scifi schlock with Star Trek branding slapped on top of them. nothing philosophical, no morality plays, they really have nothing to say at all
then they released Lower Decks which is Rick and Morty with Star Trek branding
and now they have a 3D animated kid's show with Star Trek branding (I don't know much about it but it can't be good)
the worst part is that the optimism and emotional maturity are completely gone. they've been replaced with exactly what you'd expect from modern TV shows
and of course now, because Star Trek has been so diluted, the fandom is flooded with generic scifi fans who love the new shows and see the old ones (if they're more than passingly aware of them at all) as boring cheesy prototypes of the newer shows

I think it's interesting how people like to aestheticize dystopian worlds, or even fantasize about living in them
I was just scrolling r/cyberpunk and I saw a confusing mix of people glamorizing cyberpunk worlds, and also criticizing real-world high-tech dystopian capitalism
it seems like a lot of popular media might be trying to balance between making a world seem appealing (generally in a glitzy surface-level aesthetic way), and making it upsetting/disturbing
I wonder if people have a hard time fantasizing about something as positive as a #utopia. if they need dystopian elements to make the world feel believable before they can escape into it. or maybe they have a hard time imagining what a utopia would look like at all
because the thing is, you can have the cyberpunk aesthetic and all the cool transhuman tech and still be incredibly #utopian. those aren't mutually exclusive things. for example the outer system in Eclipse Phase is (mostly) like that

oh! hehe - I didn't realize that this could be confusing, but I'm happy to explain it
I generally use parenthesis for asides: little tangents or things that I want to add, that aren't grammatically needed for the sentence to make sense. they're almost like an optional addition to the sentence or paragraph (like this)
but I use curly braces in order to divide a sentence into grammatical phrases/chunks, whenever I think that a sentence might be grammatically confusing otherwise. for example, here's a famous garden path sentence:
the old man the boat
and here it is with curly brackets to hopefully make it easier to parse:
{the old} {man} {the boat}
I mostly use curly brackets when I have a very complex noun-phrase that I want to visually separate out from the rest of the sentence - so that you can understand the noun-phrase in isolation, and then apply it to the sentence like it's a variable in programming

you know those video game textboxes where the text appears character-by-character, like in Pokemon or Zelda?
I hate those so fucking much. you could put the most interesting text in the *world* in those text boxes and I would still hate reading it
you can't scroll up or down. you can press B to make it go faster, but if you're too slow you might skip that part completely. there's almost never an option to make the text appear instantly, either - so you have to wait for it to slowly appear
it's the absolute worst reading experience. and it doesn't help that any time I'm reading those textboxes, what I want most in that moment is to *actually play the game*

me: it's upsetting how many D&D characters are haunted by unresolved trauma and abuse. I want to make characters who are healing from their trauma, and are doing the things that they do because they care deeply about something
them: adventuring is an extremely dangerous profession, and people who choose to gamble with their lives on a daily basis generally aren't doing well mentally and are often forced into this life out of desperation
me: those are very good points. in that case, I'm going to make my mentally healthy characters in another system because that sounds way too real

I've been watching videos of people explaining why turn-based RPGs are fun to them, but they're so vague that they don't really help
like people will talk about how each encounter requires them to come up with a new strategy, and that just confuses me because I've never needed a strategy besides "spam the highest attack move", and I'm not sure how a more complex strategy than that (plus maybe healing and a debuff or two) could be possible when the abilities are so simple

do y'all know of a good way that I could get neovim 0.9.5 (this specific version) running in #Debian? it seems like the most recent version in the repos is like 0.7
I tried to set up flatpak but couldn't figure it out and I'm not sure if that's what I would want for this task anyway

why does Linux need so many different types of autorun files? apparently for every single environment variable, there are about six hundred different autorun files where I could set it - and each one is subtly different in ways that make no fucking sense to me, but will probably break something if I get it wrong

I installed flatpak, but it had no repositories configured. (it did not tell me this. I had to figure it out) so I found a repository, added it to flatpak, it told me that I needed to set an environment variable, but not where or how. so I documented that somewhere for whenever I can figure out how to do that. then I added the repository
then flatpak told me to reboot so that the repository would work. so I rebooted. and now flatpak *does* know about the repository, but still can't find any software??

also for some reason when I sudo su all of the color goes away? I think a bunch of .bashrc settings get reset to whatever /root/.bashrc uses but I'm afraid to modify /root/.bashrc in case that breaks something

okay so there are no driver issues and Linux seems to play nice with the trackpad and display, which is more than I was expecting. but omg setting everything up is *exhausting*
for some reason Debian insists on me typing vi instead of vim and I fixed this with .bashrc except now when I run sudo vim that *still* doesn't work. so I'm thinking about symlinking /bin/vim to /bin/vi but I'm worried this is going to break something
also apparently there are five or six different ways of changing caps to control, and all of them have different pros and cons that don't make any sense to me

holy shit - this is the first time that wifi has worked out-of-the-box for me with Linux
I literally set it up during the install for Debian - I didn't even have to install a package

for some reason the x86 version of Debian is called i386 because I guess they wanted it to be as hard as possible to find the right ISO for your CPU
also x86_64 is called amd64 because Linux should be the Dark Souls of computing and you've got to make everything as obtuse as possible

oh wait no apparently endeavorOS only works on x86_64 or ARM devices and I bet this fucking laptop is 32-bit
edit: yep it's an Intel T2050 which is 32-bit

just found an ancient laptop (1 GB RAM and a dual-core 1.6 GHz CPU) buried in the hoarder house that I live in, and I want to experiment with installing Linux on it - since I want to eventually break my dependence on Microsoft's spyware
(as much as I vocally hate Linux, I also hate Windows - I just don't need to complain about it because everyone already knows how shit Windows is)
so anyway I'm thinking of installing endeavorOS since everyone seems to be recommending Arch? but I don't have the patience to use actual Arch lol
or maybe Fedora - I'm not sure yet

Paladins is a blatant Overwatch ripoff - right down to the dwarf-coded engineer who puts down turrets. and while Blizzard was shitting the bed with Overwatch 2, Paladins was continuing to be A Very Fun Game, which it still is today

5e: you'll be dextrous and intelligent. that is the only valid character option if you want to be at an appropriate power level

5e: 50% of this game is going to feel like filling out tax paperwork to you - and in the other 50% you'll be forced to roleplay as a character that has almost no resemblance to the one you wanted to make

young me: I just got invited to a D&D game and I already know exactly what kind of character I want to make! she's going to be an expert steampunk tinkerer who's really charismatic and has a mechanical dragonfly that eats coal and delivers packages for her
5e: okay so first of all, you're going to be starting at level 3 so you can't be an expert at anything yet. in order to become an expert, you have to level up over the course of 1-2 IRL years - assuming the game lasts that long
5e: also, there is no tinkerer class, but you can be an artificer. they're basically just glorified mages though - they don't actually make anything mechanical or steampunk
me: what if I reflavor the artificer's spells-
5e: to be technology instead? the spells in this game are extremely limited and niche by design, to balance them. if you have technology that can replicate something like Misty Step, that raises a lot of questions about why your teleportation is so limited in so many strange ways

that's totally fair! I honestly have very little patience for languages that are quirky or that I find hard-to-read, but I can appreciate the value in being able to count on compatibility years down the line. it's such a shame that Python makes these subtle compatibility-breaks tbh - but I guess if they limited themselves to only 100% compatibility then it would end up like javascript. I wish elegance and backwards-compatibility weren't in conflict so often

hm, to be honest I've never really needed to pipe one command into another in my "shell" (actually Python) scripts. usually when I pipe a command into another in bash, it's because I want to do some simple text filtering with something like grep
but now that you mention it, I'm not actually sure if there's a simple way to pipe output from one subprocess command into another in Python. there *probably* is? but I'm not sure how that would work

just learned something about #DentalHygiene today
when I was young, my literal autistic mind heard "don't swallow mouthwash" and "don't swallow toothpaste" and interpreted them as "these are toxic. do not swallow any amount of these, no matter how minuscule that amount is"
so I always rinsed my mouth out with water, after brushing my teeth or swishing mouthwash. that way there would be no toothpaste/mouthwash left in my mouth for me to eventually swallow
turns out, you're *supposed* to leave some of these in your mouth to mix with your saliva. you're supposed to spit *most* of them out, but leave whatever you can't spit out without the aid of water. the fluoride is ideally supposed to soak into your teeth for around 30 minutes (during which you shouldn't eat or drink) and this will amplify the benefits of the fluoride
and, I guess it's safe to eventually swallow the small amount of toothpaste/mouthwash that's left over after spitting?
