I have a book exchange in a mall near me.
Yesterday something cool happened.
Usually, I browse the English section (very few books, mostly crime and old folks' genre fiction).
I decided to pick up a Spanish book (I don't read as much in Spanish as I should).
Immediately, I saw this little book, peeking out at eye level. Invisible Cities is my favourite book of all time. I reread it most years, and it has inspired the novel I'm currently working on.
Calvino's book is unlike any other I've read. Extremely concise and precision engineered, yet philosophical, dreamy, and creative. It both has a narrative and it doesn't. Every time you read it, new thoughts form.
Here's the thing, I don't currently have a physical copy of it. Now I do. And this copy turned out to be the English version.
Books have a habit of finding you when you most need them.
Currently reading it (maybe the 5th time or so).
I have to keep it away from my cat, who loves the musty smell of this 1979 issue and keeps biting the pages, haha.

I think a better question is 'What is the long-term value of machine text?'
I agree with many of the comments here. The value of LLM posts now is low, and it will trend to zero for humans. For machine reading, it will be necessary.
But ultimately, humans are the ones who create and buy things, who put in time and effort... or don't. They value human things, especially where time and effort cannot be faked.
Brands should be doubling their efforts to stand out, but instead, they are publishing reams of content their employees, users, and potential customer don't give a shit about.

Over the last 5 years, I've been in a 'Lads' Book Club' with 4 friends.
(Read on for my 3 favourite picks 📚)
The other lads are quite slow readers, so we only get through 4 books a year or so (I usually read about 30-50 books per year).
Still, it's a brilliant feeling (and a growing trend) to discuss fiction in a men's (or women's) circle.
Thought this might resonate with other nostriches, especially as the book we just discussed was recommended by @nprofile…us4a.
All 5 of us are writers or actors, and all are heavy readers. Still, it's great to approach each session with no agenda, no posturing, no fear of saying the wrong thing and getting cancelled. We value stories and characters from all walks of life, even if we are all White 40-something men.

My favourites books from the last few years:
1. Snow Falling on Cedars by David Guterson.
Beautiful court room drama with WWII historical context set in a fictional island in the PNW.
2. Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver
A brilliant re-telling of David Copperfield set against the backdrop of the Deep South opiod epidemic.
3. A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles
An understated slow burn with impeccable plotting told over decades of imprisonment in Soviet Russia.

Why am I writing this?
In the hope it'll prompt a few nostriches to read one of these books, or better yet, join forces and discuss the meaning of stories with other likeminded people.
No matter how many AI agents we build, human-centric fiction still has a place at the heart of our world.

Buying a Mars Bar with my pocket money in the 90s.

And they aren’t as big.
Mars Bars in 2000 weighed 65 grams.
Now? Just 51 grams.

So what, Phil. Who cares?
That’s inflation, right?

It happens.

So do our wages.
Sure.
But you're not in control of either.
And funnily enough, your purchasing power only goes down.

I'm Phil, and this is my story.
After studying history and embarking on a career in advertising, I ran away to join the circus. OK, not the circus (I can't do backflips). But I did leave the UK to travel the world and teach English.
Argentina, Mexico, and Asia opened my eyes to different people, attitudes and realities. I started to write - first a humorous travel blog, then articles and fiction. I've since published hundreds of stories and several books.
In addition to writing for clients, I began to coach writers online. One of those writers orange-pilled me, and I'm forever grateful. We still work together today🧡.
Since then, I've read a stack of #bitcoin books even taller than me (1.95m) and have gone deep into the rabbit hole of economics, money, and freedom tech.
In 2024, I shuttered my coaching business to focus full time on my two passions - #writing and bitcoin. Now I work exclusively with bitcoin-native clients and edit the @npub12xy…vqut series.
