I just want to say thank you to the Americans on here who have evidently made a concerted effort to start putting an F to specify when they are talking about Fahrenheit degrees.
I can't imagine what prompted the recent shift, but it makes a difference, it's clearer and respectful to the rest of the world, and I for one have noticed the change.

There was an unprecedented actual cyclone in the Mediterranean 2 days ago that caused billions in damage to heavily populated coastal areas most everyone has heard of if not been to personally (Malta, Sicily, Sardinia, Calabria, etc.)
I mention it because big as it was, this event barely made the news. And because it's evidence that even if we are politically victorious in pushing back fascism, we still have the problem of climate change. Existently speaking it's far more important.

When someone cuts down a fruit tree before its (relatively short) course of life is run, it makes me sad as few other things can. I know this comes from my grandmother, a specific event of her childhood, wherein the TVA seized and cleared their peach orchard for flooding just as it came into maturity. I've written about it, carried it as a myth, considered it from every angle. Those trees would have died naturally in 20 years, but in her grief they lived 70 more, and now on in me much longer.

It's owned by private mega-corp Ferrero, "one of the most secretive companies in the world," and Ferrero steadfastly refuses to switch out palm oil in its products, such as Nutella, even knowing the environmental cost. I'm assuming USians here are hearing it, but Europeans are enraged against the USA today in a way that hasn't happened before. Even normally moderate voices are posting things that I didn't think you could say in public. People are scorching tepid politicians and most importantly are calling for a Canada-style boycott of everything American, including against those who "didn't vote for Trump" but are now letting this chaos spill onto the rest of us through inaction. Here's another artist whose life story reads like an adventure novel. He was discovered in Morocco by Paul & Jane Bowles, and then shot like a rocket through artistic high society worldwide. Of all his works which I've seen, this is the one that arrests me. Are these roots, shrapnel, vessels, neurons, heaped laundry? As the Wikipedia article mentions, he had a secret way of layering paint to create extraordinary depth:

1. There's no substitute for seeing art in person. Particularly as optical light & color theory pervaded painting, reproductions become harder and harder to get just right. Here's a painting that looks totally different depending on slight color adjustments in the repro.
2. We tend to miss it today but he was obsessed with 'modern' lighting in his designs, and I think that's the source of those pale blank glares often seen in this period.

I can't help but notice that I cook best when I'm depressed. Why is that? Sure as shootin', when I'm glum I start churning out the greatest hits, even when I don't feel like eating them myself. Is it because I go slower, am less distractible, or pickier? Or maybe it's an evolutionary adaptation to keep good friends close through hard times. They are eating well lately, with lots of warm smiles returning with the tupperware. That helps.

Americans are missing the cries of pain from public school teachers right now, and from what I can see it means they are quitting in droves, starting with the best first - from physical endangerment, lack of pay, and burnout from struggling in the middle against arbitrary and constantly changing metrics on the one hand and parents who never take their side on the other. It's a sad situation. There's no more important profession in the world and they're valued lower than just about anyone.

Last night I didn't get to walk until after dark, robed all in black, hooded like a monk. The village also seemed from another era, with medieval streets, clanging bells, Napoleonic walls and foggy creek. I went down to the cemetery just meaning to turn around, but then I peeked inside. To my surprise each grave held a flickering electric flame in the cold darkness. I stood there a long time, the only living soul to see the show. It seems wasteful to illuminate the dead, but the urge is ancient.

I hate covid and don't believe it's over, but I want to say what's getting lost to history:
I'm grateful for the lockdowns in 2020. I spent months in seclusion and came out with the clearest mind I've ever had. In my case it was a blissful reset, however shadowed in fear and even as it wrecked my business.
It proved that whenever we want to, we can change the economy. It can be changed overnight. It already was. Neoliberal excuses are unmasked. It's one reason they support mass amnesia since.

In order to get 4-6 Tbsp of raw peanuts for a Pad Thai tonight, I had to buy 2 kilos at once, already shelled. That's a lot of leftover raw peanuts.
Now, I've not had southern boiled peanuts in more than a decade, I'm guessing. Why not try to make them at home? Apparently it's as simple as soaking and simmering. All the extra is already in a brine for overnight. I'm more excited about this than I was about the Pad Thai, and it was pretty dang good.

Yoan Capote is a Cuban artist famous enough now not to need my publicity or anyone else's, but when I tell you this exhibit blew my mind... It was with works as simple and rugged and massive as they were refined and detailed and provocative. It was one of those unforgettable shows where you leave feeling humbled to have even been there. I'm a huge fan, and the curation was top-notch.

Last night after an oil tasting a young woman interned here in viniculture and olive farming said wait, I have a surprise for you. She brought us 2 bowls of ribollita, not like restaurant versions but several days old, so the flavors had married, and then flitted away. It was the best I've ever had. I don't know why she was so kind. Because we take such interest in their study? An innate generosity?
It was warm and dry yesterday. Maybe today the harvest can finally begin, pitiful as it must be.

After the fire of 64, Nero seized the sweet center of Rome for himself and built the most ostentatious palace the world had ever seen. After his fall and Damnatio Memoriae, the house was razed and a People's Colosseum was built over part of the site in symbolic rebuke. The damning was so thorough that we still don't think much of Nero today.

And in even happier news, we used to pack in Fisherman's Friends from America. They're actually English but we couldn't find them in southern Europe for a long time. No more. They're available in just about every podunk grocery nowadays. What a convenience and comfort that is.

We still don't know for sure, but it seems what we all had in this community was a strain of covid. The loss of the sense of smell is a telltale even though no one has a positive test (yet). The disease spread like wildfire even among moderately cautious people. It seems like literally everyone got it over a period of about a week. The good news is that it only lasted 48-60 hours in each case and we're back on our feet again. Of course long-term damages are yet to be seen. This has not been fun.

Bang vs. Whimper:
I keep thinking how many movies I've seen in which the US White House is destroyed by a hostile attack or an alien spacecraft. The power of those scenes was the shocking desecration of what audiences saw as a high-holy of the democracy.
Turns out American voters got here first. They didn't even need the usual building permits to start demolition.
(It may be illegal and seem emotional, but the WH has been rebuilt several times. It's not even that old in its Cold War version.)

I was just setting a small crate of good apples out on the sidewalk with a sign that said FREE because I picked too many and can't use them all. But a passing friendly neighbor smiled and said no no, nice idea but no one will take them, that it'll just be considered trash (or worse), as there aren't acts of kindness like this toward strangers in Italy without suspicion. I don't know what to think about that. I want to blend in, but another part of me wants to start a larger free stuff exchange!

I stand amazed but you know what I'm even more amazed that the situation has gotten this bad and there's no end in sight. Teachers have never been less respected or more abused (not to mention the threat of violence and shootings) and standards have never been more confusing. The teachers are caught in the middle - of budget crises of culture wars of the lack of mental health treatments - and it's draining the talent pool and we're all going to be much poorer for it.
