It's just that the nuclear industry has surprisingly good connections to governments.
They receive a *lot* of support in all stages and don't have to assume the huge hidden costs.

"The Revolution starts in the kitchen"
Wanna do something badass?
Get some people and start a cooking collective.
You can start really small. Bring coffee to people at a picket or a protest.
Organize a food not bombs. Cook for an event at the local social center. Go out, serving meals to people.
Contact local businesses, and farmers for supplies. Get supporters. Get organized.
This makes people feel cared for, gives them power to fight. And it creates a network. Not to forget: is a lot of fun.

We, the faculty, students, and staff of the Universities in Rojava/Northern and Eastern Syria, send you this message as we leave our classrooms to help defend our universities, our cities, and our revolution alongside the self-defense forces. Before the autonomous administration, Raqqa (Sharq) and Kobanê had no universities. Our campuses, built in the midst of war, have reclaimed long-denied education to young people, grounding learning in women’s liberation, ecology, and a democratic, communal life for the people.
For the past fifteen years in Rojava/Northern and Eastern Syria, under constant pressure and repeated attacks by imperial, sub-imperial, and colonial powers, our people have built a shared life through collective capacity. Against capitalism and patriarchy, we have worked to advance a society rooted in women’s liberation, ecological life, and democratic self-rule. Under the conditions of war across the region, and against the violence and impositions of regional states and their mercenaries, we relied on our own self-defense and our own diplomacy to carve out space, and within that space, we struggled to build a life that once seemed impossible.
Today, that life is under attack. What we have built, this source of hope for oppressed peoples in the region and around the world, is being targeted from all sides by the fascist forces of the Syrian Arab Army, an al-Qaeda lineage rebranded into state authority and dressed in suits, and by mercenaries, backed by regional and global imperial powers.
We are living through an unfolding feminicide and genocide. The situation on the ground is urgent and worsening by the day. Our university buildings are full of displaced people trying to survive the winter without blankets or extra clothing. Turkish drones have targeted several places near the University of Rojava in Qamishlo during the last few days. Students in the dormitories in Qamishlo are cut off from their families in Kobanê, not knowing if their loved ones are safe, and unable to reach them.
The situation in Kobanê is particularly dire. The city is currently under siege, surrounded by Syrian Army forces on one side and the Turkish army on the other. For seven days, there has been no electricity, no access to water, and no reliable access to basic necessities. Under these conditions, learning, safety, and survival are being targeted as part of a coordinated siege.
We say this clearly to our friends, colleagues, and comrades: we will defend ourselves with everything we have. We will defend our people, our universities, and the possibility of the life we have struggled to build.
We call on you, wherever you are, to stand with Rojava. Raise your voice. Organize on your campuses, in your unions, and in your communities. Use your positions, however limited they may feel, to push for action, to demand accountability, and to refuse silence. Strengthen the networks of solidarity that make resistance possible. Stand up for the revolutionary aims of freedom, women’s liberation, ecological life, and democratic communal life. Your solidarity is part of our self-defense, and it can help shift the balance and prevent yet another genocide in the region.

Yeah, thx that you take the time responding me. I think that westerners, and *especially* left-leaning ones with a positive idea of an utopic socialism should listen carefully to what people from former USSR countries have to say about these ideas of governance.
I still think it is complex because...
EDIT: now you made me dig into a rabbit hole including Piłsudski (thank you for this) and about how much of the image of 'White Poland' is a product of soviet propaganda and despite my general despise of nationalism (especially modern nationalism) I will keep my mouth shut for a while, lol.

ok, thx for the input. It's still a *hugely* controversial topic for me, because the Nazis had their plans to conquer the "Lebensraum Osten" for a long time.
And that was also known by the Soviets. So it could have been also preparation for a pre-emptive attack on highly expansionist Germany.
Disclaimer: I don't want to defend Stalin, who was a mass-murdering imperialist. But I think almost all the interpretations of this part of 20th century history are heavily influenced by ideology. I try to get bits and pieces from different perspectives, but even with the ones that pretend to have a neutral position, it is difficult.

However, please also consider that the location of the server influences the mod teams.

Do the exercise and put yourself in their position (assuming they're not hardcore Zionists but people worried about the potential social and legal consequences for their moderation decisions). Also, even if they agree with you on the condemnation of Israel's crimes, it might be that they consider this specific post as counter-productive achieving the goal of stopping the genocide, because the use of messages that align with antisemitic tropes is a) dangerous and wrong, and b) makes the Israel supporters (who bear a huge responsibility in facilitating this genocide) rally harder around Netanyahu.

Is there a database of wrong answers of ChatGPT that could be used to give my students the experience that AI sometimes makes stuff up?
Bonus point for wrong facts related to environment/natural sciences/biology.
When they get a wrong answer, the resulting discussion could be a very productive opportunity to learn critical thinking in modern times.
The situation is dire and we really need to counter the #AIHype before it is too late. My colleagues are split into a small group of AI-brainwormed (unfortunately we are almost forced to attend seminars with titles like "How AI can improve your teaching") and many totally desperate professors that do not know how to deal with the situation.

The European Commission is setting up a scientific panel of independent experts to support the implementation and enforcement of the AI Act.
The panel will focus on general-purpose AI (GPAI) models and systems, advising the EU AI Office and national authorities on systemic risks, model classification, evaluation methodologies, and cross-border market surveillance. It will also alert the AI Office of emerging risks.
The Commission looking for 60 members for a renewable 24-month term.
Candidates should have expertise in GPAI models and systems, AI impacts, or related fields, such as model evaluation, risk assessment and mitigations, cybersecurity, emerging systemic risks, and compute measurements and thresholds. Experts must have a PhD or equivalent experience and remain independent of any AI provider.
The selection process will ensure gender balance and representation across EU Member States and EEA/EFTA countries. While *EU citizenship is not a requirement*, 80% of the experts must be from the EU or EFTA Member States.
Applications are open until 14 September.

I would be careful with the "the whole way of life on most of the planet would need to fundamentally change." part.
I think that we need to be much more specific in order not to have people thinking of humans living again in caves and stuff.
The cruel thing is that maybe there wouldn't even be necessary so much change.
Especially not in quality of life.
We need definitely decrease hyperaccelerated consumerism via #degrowth. But consumerism is anyway not a source of real joy. More like a quick and shiny party drug that makes you an addict.
And the ephimeral, inefficient and unstable economies we built on fossil fuels? That's just one of many ways to organize society so that people know when they get up in the morning what they will work today and organizing the stuff they need.
Sure, people will have to mend their stuff again, share their stuff with other people, and swap most of the weird, unconnected bullshit jobs people are doing for meaningful work like artisanship, farming or caring for others. And deciding things in your community is also sometimes exhausting.
But all this is not a "fundamental change". The fundamental change is what is to come (especially when the system continues like this)..

Changing individual behavior without changing the system achieves only about 10% emissions reduction. Governments and companies hold the keys for the remaining 90%, this we need to put pressure on them!

Also, we are working here on a very interesting horticultural management system to improve soil health by applying wood residues (e.g. branches from tree pruning). The wood residues increase soil organic carbon and contain also some nutrients. Usually, people would advise against using wood residues as fertilizer (because they contain a lot of carbon, making the other nutrients such as nitrogen unavailable and not letting crops grow), but some farmers found a very nice solution:
They apply the wood chips and plant directly sweet potato. Sweet potato is a totally rad plant that has cool bacteria around their roots that fix nitrogen and grows perfectly in these soils. After some months, you can harvest a nice amount of sweet potatoes AND have a supernicely regenerated soil for other crops.
The inventor calls the technique "Carboniato" (boniato is sweet potato in spanish).

We investigated the topic of pathogen survival on surfaces during the pandemic.
As a general rule, most human pathogens don't survive longer times (over a week) on surfaces. We did this for a while to our packed grocieries in the times of large anxiety when everything from the supermarket was considered potentially mortal.
Thus, you can "wait-sterilize", putting the purifier into quarantine for a while. Warm temperatures and humidity decrease the survival rate of most bacteria.
Specifically, Mycobacterium tuberculosis is also very sensitive to sunlight, so giving your purifier a sunbath might also be helpful. (I am not sure whether you are concerned specifically about tuberculosis or if you took it as an example)

but you need to take into account that "survival rate" also means that a scientists detected some DNA on a surface, which does not mean necessarily that somebody could get infected by touching the object.

Plastic mulch has indeed certain advantages:
- cheap and effective, very easy suppression of weeds for high-value vegetables
- quickly installed on large surfaces
- saves irrigation water
- avoids erosion
- combines well with a mechanized horticultural system (fertilization, irrigation...)
Globalization and industrialization of agriculture increased economic pressure for farmers so much that many felt the need to industrialize their cropping systems.
The weird thing is that even in organic vegetable production, there is a lot of plastic mulch used (because they don't use the potent synthetic herbicides their conventional neighbors have). Without herbicides, weeding is a lot of work.
And with increasing costs of manual labor, and with many parts of the population not willing anymore to do the physically challenging work on the field, cost cutting became very important.
Nevertheless:
Plastic mulch sucks totally. Main thing are the microplastics, which is a *huge* issue, although they come also through many other pathways into our soils and then into the vegetables. There's a lot of plastic bags and shit in the organic waste fraction, not to mention sewage sludge, which is probably one of the most effective ways to distribute the microplastics of the washing clothes (washing machines are essentially microplastic-producing devices), cosmetics (yes, industry still adds microplastics in many products) and all the tyre dust from the roads that end up in the sewage.
But anyway, organic mulch (grass clippings, legume-cereal mixtures, wood chips...) has many benefits over plastic mulch:
- can be produced on-site (as cover crops, or using byproducts from agriculture or forestry). This is an important aspect for #Agroecology: make Peasants independent of BigAg.
- surface application of organic material adds nutrients and carbon to the soil
- providing a nutritious cover for soil organisms (think about that in nature, soil is almost never bare. Usually, or there's grass, or leaves. It's us humans who seem to love bare soil)
- properties (cover vs decomposition) can be adapted to the specific needs of the crop, the soil and the system (caveat: you have to know what you do)
- organic mulch does not leave microplastic shit in your soil. But creates the perfect environment for your soil organisms to thrive.

And, before somebody comes with "biodegradable" plastics. They are utter greenwashing nonsense.
Many of the biodegradable plastics just degrade quicker into ... microplastics (and since you can't see them anymore, it is considered "degraded"). The whole bioplastics thing is something for another rant, another day.

- Kurds/Ezidi: The kurds, which are an opressed minority in Turkey, Syria, Irak and Iran, managed to build a very interesting model of democratic confederationalism in Rojava. Women are 50% of the decision makers, in the villages, there are three majors (kurdish, Syrian/arabic and another one depending on the local circumstances) in order to avoid conflicts.
While the administration and society in Rojava has many impressively progressive aspects, there are some conflicts with Arab Syrians. Because of the invasion by Turkish military and islamist mercenaries, the Kurds were forced to make some agreements with Assad.
Important to notice is that people in Aleppo are apparently happier under HTS rule than under Assad's. But the situation is complicated and volatile.

I would not be too quick in excusing Artaud. In German Wikipedia there is something:
"In einem Brief aus der Anstalt Rodez an Adolf Hitler vom 3. Dezember 1943 erwähnt er ein Treffen im Mai 1932 mit Hitler im Berliner Künstlerlokal Romanisches Café. Ob das Treffen stattgefunden hat, ist unbekannt."
(in a letter addressed to Adolf Hitler written from the clinic Rodez on December 3rd 1943, Artaud mentions a meeting in May 1932 with Hitler in the Romanisches Café, an artist's club in Berlin. If the meeting took place is not known.)
Thus, there ARE definitely some hints. Sometimes artists hide behind art and justify anything, but not everything can be excused.
On the other hand, people are sometimes really quick in judging people from the past.

COP is bullshit. Agreed.
But, there is networking among activists, visibilization of marginalized activists (something that can save their lives) and, not to forget, some influence on random people in delegations. Not everyone is a corrupt asshole, think that in these delegations some of the people also genuinely try to do something, they just decided to work there for climate instead of blocking streets. There is a myriad of tactics in this fight. Let people choose.
Nobody is having great expectations. But to mention the CO2 of the air travel to COP is to fall entirely to the fossil fuel propaganda of the individual footprint.
(btw: from Pakistan to Baku it's only around half the distance than between London and New York. Bark at someone else. Seriously...

Yeah...
That's the reason some places (like riseup mail) don't store the information in the first place, so they can't be forced to reveal it.
But I understand that wikimedia might have their reasons to need the user information because we all know that anonymity on the internet is not always a good thing, especially in such a delicate project like wikipedia.

Last Monday, the United States-based non-profit Wikimedia Foundation agreed to share with the Delhi High Court basic subscriber information about the users who edited the news agency ANI’s Wikipedia page. This came during the proceedings of a defamation suit filed by ANI against the user-created online encyclopeida for stating that ANI had been accused of serving as a “government propaganda tool”.

The King of Spain is visiting ground zero of the floods in the region of Valencia and people are showing their feelings. Maybe this was the first time in his life that he felt fear.
This is unheard of in Spain. As far as I knnow, the monarch was never received like this and much less thrown mud at.
People are upset because of the horrific management of the state (especially the regional far-right government of Valencia) and can't understand why thousands of officers are occupied in the visit of the king instead of providing disaster relief.

In #Valencia the third larges city in Spain, things are getting interesting:
On Saturday, after a huge demonstration demanding affordable housing, several hundred protestors occupied a central plaza.
In Spain, housing is getting a huge issue (last week there was an enormous demonstration in Madrid) and people are getting really fed up with the capitalist extractive model of tourism that brings benefits to a few and problems for many.
Additionally, the people show solidarity with the people of Palestine and the nefarious role of the EU enabling ethnic cleansing.
Things are getting heated, and we don't know yet if the spark will turn into a wildfire. Spain had their own, very strong Occupy movement (#15M), and people still remember.

There are claims this was a "cyber breach" and "sabotage", whatever this might mean.

Hmmm... I just went through the first half of your follows (as a friend, not a creep...) but we share already a good deal of follows, so either
a) we have similar interests
b) we reached the limits of Mastodon (I'd hope not... 😬)
c) there are separated parallel social bubbles (where hashtags might be the only way to break through)
d) it's not social bubbles, but the federetation structure. I wonder if there is a convenient way to look up "your instance is federated only to 14.2% percent of the fediverse".
For me it varies a lot. Some days I am totally amazed about the many interesting posts I find. Other days it's just not my thing. Don't know the reasons, maybe also just personal mood. 3 or 4 interesting news and a handful of interactions with nice mutuals are probably enough to make the time spent on social media woth it.
Maybe we should try to retake some # followfridays suggestions soon.

I think the same. Besides the thing that it is always a good idea to not dehumanize people with diverging political opinions, let it alone be to understand the thoughts behind political decisions you do not agree with. And you learn a good deal about propaganda.
That said, before somebody misunderstands me: we have to beware to give smart, strategically manipulating populists a platform for their propaganda. E.g. German media, for some reason, decided that it would be a good idea to give a lot of space and television to actual fascists and listen to their racist garbage without even fact-checking their lies.

The wild thing is: A reduction of 68-86% of energy usage in the global north is entirely possible, going for the low-hanging fruits and policies that make it easier for people to adjust their lifestyles:
Think it like this:
- the first 10-20% are really easy and cheap things (like fixing leaks or installing some switches for appliances that consume a lot of energy), we almost won't even notice.
- The next 10-20% tranche comes with a some technological improvements (efficient light bulbs, thermal insulation, etc.). here are some investment costs, but the savings quickly pay out And there's a lot of money laying around (#TaxTheRich : https://www.tax-the-rich.eu/)
- speaking about the rich: a very, very small segment of the population has totally inacceptable consumption patterns. If the richest 10% would decrease their emissions to the level of the *average European*, over 30 % of the total emissions would be saved...
- For the next 10-20%, we need some adjustments of policiess and lifestyle: #MobilityTransition, #AgroecologyTransition, Energy... you get the point. A moderate shift of our society towards #degrowth . People changing their behaviour, the typical stuff: mainly plant-based diet, no car where possible, drastic reduction of air travel, banning advertising of emission-intensive luxury goods...
All this stuff could be achieved without greater turmoil and maintaining most of the commodities of our era
Yes, the more we achieve, the more difficult it gets. The last tranche will require really deep cuts (ask your grandmother how life was in the 50-60s). But meanwhile, the more just and equal society becomes, the easier it will be to get to the bottom by collective action. It will be some while until people start again to own and use stuff collectively, take responsibility in their neighbourhood council and look out for each other. But we will be rewarded with an amazing improvement of life quality.
PD: I didn't even include the development of new technologies. I am highly sceptical of technocratic illusions, but there might be some potential. Taking into account the almost inevitable Jevons paradox (increasing efficiency leads to higher utilization of the resource= you are more likely to travel larger distances if your car is more efficient), there might still be some positive effect on efficiency. Maybe bringing down consumption by a single digit percentage?

Maybe I don't get how social media work, but for me, I expect written language to be accurate (a different thing is if you have a heated discussion with somebody about the war and say 'this is so Nazi, bro' or something).
The Nazis were a quite singular historical movement (not that there aren't currently quite some fans that would love to do something similar). Really massive and very thorough in their destruction. Fuck, I mean, rewatch a documentary...
Why do we want to call somebody a Nazi? Probably to convince our peers that this person holds an ideology of pure evil, that they need to fight and that the 'neutral' bystanders and the current allies of the 'nazi' should stop supporting them.
And if you are not convinced by the fact that it's a question of respect not to compare groups that were targeted by genocide with their harassers, then maybe you'll understand the tactical consideration that, by compariing Israel with Nazis, the most likely outcome is that people that still support Israel, will only rally harder around Netanyahu. And it makes it also too easy for them to dismiss your argument (or article about the degree of fascism that reins in the Israeli government) as antisemitism. (Idon't make the rules, I just explain how people, e.g. in Germany, read news about Israel).
Netanyahu has definitely some buddies that might tick quite a few boxes of Nazi ideology (although, as @npub1764…nuj0 pointed out, there is no lack of other ideologies promoting or even executing settler colonialism, racist supremacy, pro-torture and genocide). But, especially on social media, people might probably still understand the comparison as 'Jews=Nazis'.
