Ernsthaft? Staatsräson ist Hirnverwesung.

❝
[T]he prevailing discourse on settler colonialism often remains overly simplistic. It assumes from the outset the existence of two distinct, fixed, and pure groups: “settlers” on the one hand and “natives” on the other.
As a Palestinian and as a scholar, I have no doubt that what the State of Israel is carrying out here is a project of settler colonialism; this is the most accurate analytical framework for describing reality. Precisely for that reason, I would urge those adopting it to exercise caution in how they discuss some of its core components.
…
In the Zionist version, indigeneity is often used to justify exclusive Jewish sovereignty […] This argument rests on the biblical narrative of the “Promised Land” and the return to Zion, seeking to establish Jews as natives in a sense that grants them a “natural” ownership of the land. The identification of the settler population with a biblical people is also familiar from other colonial projects, as Ron Naiweld has argued.
...
[A]ny attempt to resolve present-day realities through a competition over historical precedence, genealogies, or DNA is doomed to reach a dead end. [...] when indigeneity is measured in terms of “cultural purity,” it becomes a trap: A community is required to prove a frozen authenticity in order to justify its rights, instead of having those rights recognized on the basis of law or as reparations for ongoing political injustice.
This happened, for example, in relation to the Bedouins, when growing international recognition of their indigeneity shifted toward cultural preservation rather than helping them ground a political claim to land, sovereignty, and recognition. For this reason, the concept of indigeneity itself requires critical examination.
Who is a settler? Unlike the native, who can be defined in historical, cultural, or symbolic terms, the settler is defined primarily by the nature of their actions. The distinction between a guest, an immigrant, a resident, and a settler does not lie in biological roots but in the way one positions oneself within a space: Do they integrate into an existing reality, or seek to replace it? Do they live alongside the inhabitants of the land, or work to establish a regime that excludes, replaces, and erases them? Settlement is a political category — one of power, land, labor, and sovereignty.
...
The argument for Jewish indigeneity, therefore, does not negate a colonial analysis; rather, the two coexist. One may acknowledge a deep historical, religious, and cultural connection to the land while simultaneously recognizing that Israeli sovereignty, as it developed in practice, rests upon a regime of dispossession and hierarchy. Historical connection, in other words, provides no exemption from political responsibility.

To me, it's complicated. There's the distinction between translation into Hebrew as such and having an Israeli publisher do it, as well as between the question of whether doing so can be acceptable in principle vs whether it was appropriate with this particular text, whether if the final analysis says it was counterproductive means it should not have happened or whether even failed experimentation at the boycott boundaries in good faith is an important part of maintaining a healthy debate within the movement, etc.

2026-06-01 06:35:33 UTC

- reply

Ah, but that actually is part of the debate. The point was made elsewhere (by someone against the translation) that it would be different if the book in question actively tried to achieve some of the same aims as the boycott itself, but that translating an apolitical text makes it worse.

2026-06-01 06:22:21 UTC

A political system that treats the preservation of one ethnonational group's majority as a legitimate political goal is not a democracy. It is a system of demographic engineering, designed to maintain one group's supremacy at the expense of another that is denied basic rights. Calling it "democracy" does not change what it is: apartheid.
South Africa, which gave apartheid its name, also prided itself on being "the only democracy" in its region.

Palestinian Authority (PA) textbooks used in Palestinian schools across the Occupied Palestinian Territory have been a subject of sustained international scrutiny. ... Based on existing evidence, this review identifies that the textbooks largely align with UNESCO’s Recommendation on Education for Peace and Human Rights (2023a; 2023b). It finds that the textbooks demonstrate a strong commitment to human rights education, global citizenship education, political participation, interfaith dialogue, coexistence, and tolerance, in line with the UNESCO Recommendation on Education for Peace and Human Rights. The textbooks include critical perspectives on Israel, reflecting Palestinians’ historical and political
experiences under military occupation. This aligns with the UNESCO Recommendation on Education for Peace and Human Rights (2023a, para. 24) in relation to curriculum and pedagogy that emphasise critical engagement with colonialism and neo-colonialism, and is also consistent with international research showing that textbooks in protracted conflict
contexts often engage with the realities and power dynamics shaping learners’ lives.

I'm not disagreeing with the moral thrust of your argument, but if "rights" here refers to rights as in fact stated in relevant texts and frameworks, then there are indeed some "parents' rights" in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: https://unesdoc.unesco.org/ark:/48223/pf0000380161
These do as you also frame it take the form not over rights "over" the children, but of rights of parents to decide •how• the children's own rights are to be met, to complement their obligations to meet them.

They definitely are part of his fanatical Zionist circle. What's not confirmed is whether they had actual beef with him and did it this way to distract attention away from themselves or whether they were acting in their pro-genocide capacity conducting a false flag operation with his knowledge.

Pretty disingenuous, since that's what it's been doing since it's foundation. It's literally the JNF's purpose.

'They' meaning the University of Bologna?

2026-04-29 14:30:21 UTC

TIL that the original, as in first and oldest, western university, namely Bologna, was student-run.
According to Wikipedia, students “hired and paid for the teachers [and] ran everything—a fact that often put teachers under great pressure and disadvantage".
Not sure about the right balance between students and faculty running the show, but completely student-run would certainly today’s ⋅administrator-run⋅ shit show, so let's just go back to the roots and take it from there?

Most mind-blowing for me was that right-hand bias even shows up in architecture. For decades, public high schools in US were purposefully oriented such that classrooms would receive sunlight from the left, for the benefit of right handed writers.

Also, current prevalence measures are distorted, because in many places, it is literally beaten out of people. So there's plenty of coerced "right-handed" folk. I did research on this for work at one point and remember it's more like 10% at least.

Even if that were true, it would still be in contrast to, say, being able to play zillions of chess games against yourself to become a stronger player, which does work.

On the contrary, thank you for the detailed answer!
Yes, that clarifies and disentangles the “fascism means something more specific to Italians” and “don't use fascism as a generic expression of disapproval" strands.
I'd got the false impression from your original thread that you were leaning more heavily on the first.
Not that you asked, but FWIW I agree with the second as a general principle, although I think a case can be made that “tech bro ideology/TESCREAL“ (and by extension “AI” specifically as a shorthand for that) does meet quite a few of the specific analytic criteria for fascism proper. Not that everyone who calls AI fascist does actually make that case, never mind make it convincingly, but that's a different story, and not something we need to discuss.
Either way, many thanks for the response!

It's always a problem when something is used both as the name of a class of things and of one specific instance. I don't want to argue about whether the use of "fascist" as a general pattern, such that Nazism and Franco's regime were "types of fascism", is legitimate, but I'm intrigued by the idea that the generic use is anathema to Italians generally, who only associate the term specifically with the Mussolini regime.
Where does Umberto Eco famously offering a general list of criteria for fascism in the umbrella term sense fit in? Did he receive pushback on that in Italy for having embraced the generic term as an Italian? Is he the exception that proves the rule? Is there a subtle difference in the Italian original between "fascism", "fascist", etc. in terms of how generic or Mussolini-specific they are understood?

If you somehow manage to convince yourself that BOTH “Equal rights for all, from the river to the sea" AND “Israel is practising Apartheid" are supposedly antisemitic, then your definition of "antisemitism" is obviously worthless garbage and you are not very good at logic.

So apparently the Hasbara defence against the war crimes confessions in Haaretz is that it's all made up.
If the monsters felt even a shred of actual regret rather than just pathetic self-pity, they would identify themselves and make their testimony publicly.
If they're scared that would make them a target for death threats by their fascist compatriots, tough shit.
