I find the topic of password managers alluring. I 100% agree with them, mo argument there. I'm just also keenly aware that the security level of any password manager is almost completely tied to it's platform. The harder it is to sync, the less the security. It's an antipattern because people demand sync. But password managers that offer sync are inherently more vulnerable than local ones. But local ones were not really usable until we have reliable private sync mechanisms like (examples) nextcloud or rsync scripts.
I'm also am Xkeepass user in some circumstances where sync is not needed or it's manageable out of band. But I'm also a cloud password manager user where that makes sense due to the need for sync and no feasible oob sync mechanisms would work well.
The development of password managers is mysterious and important work.

I suppose the wide range of tools would make it hard to be sure about all of them. I primarily use Cursor and I give it code files all the time to read so it understands the shape of things and styles, etc before it gets to work. It doesn't _execute_ those files, it just reads them for reference. It would be absolutely insane if it executed all the code it came across. 🤷‍♂️

I was introduced to a person the other day. When she found out I was in tech she told me her son worked at Meta. I was unable to stop my face from deadpanning. She saw it and asked. I decided there was no sense pretending it didn't happen so I told her I work in #infosec and see the damage #facebook does and allows to happen to people all in the interest of hoarding wealth. I went on to say the only thing as sociopathic as #Meta is US banks.

I always considered the smart inbox, or whatever it's called, to be a lark and not something anyone would actually rely on. I always disable it, wherever it lives (like outlook, for example) because it's not only generally poor, it's also basically useless. I never asked to go hunting for my emails. Just put them in the inbox like a sane application.
Interesting to see such a clean sample, though. Feels vindicating. To know it empirically sucks.

I feel for you. It's crazy to do that much work and commitment for nothing.
Having said that, running is good for cardio but it's terrible on the body and, as you've seen, it's not a good weight loss tool. Consider a hamburger has like 1,000 calories and you burn around 100 calories an hour jogging (variations based on weight but around there). It's just not possible to run weight off without a complementary diet change that reduced calories as well. 🤷‍♂️

I don’t think there’s that much of a long game. They give money for old cars because they:
A) can still sell it for profit, and
B) mark the living shit out of cars so they can easily absorb a few thousand $K to make a deal. Even more if the buyer finances it because the dealer gets “incentives” from the banks, etc. to sign new deals.
A more interesting mental exercise, imo, is considering how many times a car is sold over its lifetime.

I love watching the death throes of technologists who can’t pivot into new tools. It leaves so much opportunity for the rest of us.
It’s the same old trope that was wide spread when assembly came out (you’ll forget how to unscrew tubes!), then when compiled languages came out (you’ll forget how to address memory directly!) then when scripting came out (it’ll be too slow to be useful!). From what I glean from your post, your main sticking points are what “meaningful” means and that you see a contradiction in how they can “reject all” request from foreign governments and also comply with them.
The meaningful thing was done to death in the Snowden era when the world learned what metadata is and nobody could agree on that subjective term then, nor now. Going one step further, I think around that time
The US scoped expired SSL keys into “business documents” which the US government can obtain fairly painlessly, thus leaving the door open for PRISM to hoover up encrypted blobs to be later decrypted when that SSL keys expires and the government obtains the ability to decrypt it all.
The informed request refusals are the _precise_ mechanism Proton uses to get _every_ such request into the court system and then they comply with that ruling. There is no contradiction there. It’s a legal mechanism to offload those decisions to the courts which is prudent because nobody knows Swiss law better than the Swiss courts.
You also link quite heavily to Proton’s admission to everything you mention. I have a hard time seeing the skulduggery you’re writing about when your sources are all public docs from the company in question. Maybe you don’t like it but it’s clear as day for anyone to look at.
I admit that I’ve never heard of Proton Meet, though. It’s weird that they’ve pivoted so heavily into US infra for that product. But if they disclose all that, it’s consumer choice.
