When I was a teen and starting at university, I remember the browser wars seemed lost in the 1990s.
Microsoft and Internet Explorer seemed to dominate. Nowadays I'm on Linux and there are other options.
That's thanks to folks not accepting the status quo and being unreasonable. It's thanks to the folks who built the software we use and who supported them.
Things can change, but it takes people and community.
It takes will and intention.
You need to be honest about where you stand.

We need to share the means of communication.
The billionaires are hoarding it.

When children do anti social things in their friends group they risk ostracisation by that group.

@nprofile…x9tq The encouragement needs to start from an early age. Little boys of my generation got Amigas and Commodore 64s and learned coding from typing in the code from magazines, fixing bugs. In some cases from the age of five.
Whereas many women had obstacles put in their way, or had never had that grounding as their parents had no idea.
Girls need that encouragement and support. But STEM education is still highly gendered.

It occurs to me that there are other voices we should be listening to that aren't European or American in our internet spaces.
So Fediverse who else should we be reading when we worry about Internet Freedom?
About the centralisation dangers and censorship on the internet?
Who are we drowning out?

I'm puzzled as to why anyone running local models feels the need to declare this to the world and blame the rest of us for judging them.
You're still consuming power even with local models, your own hardware at a time when it's hard for many folks to get new hardware as the manufacturers hoard and cause a price hike. You're still boosting LLMs.
That's privilege right there.
No wonder it's easier to blame "purity culture" than examine your own privilege.

I'm still of the opinion that we need an organisational fork of Mozilla, preferably not domiciled in the US.
We have technical forks like librewolf, that's not what I'm asking for. I'm asking for new stewards of the upstream code. Although perhaps if the forks want to consider how they'd become a hard fork, with an organisational structure that would work too.
Mozilla is a product of it's surroundings. It's surroundings was silicon valley and well 🤷‍♀️

@nprofile…t2a9 There are folks who are suspicious of mastodon.art, but I think the way that the instance has a policy of putting cash towards moderators is a good model.
It's also not a bad thing to build an alliance with other instances and build up experience and share backgrounds.
I'm also a fan of invite only to curate community. I think some of the scalers like to argue about "how do we get folks on the fediverse?"
To that I say, start with your offline community.

When I was in my 20s I remember we had a lot of separate social networks. Which all had their own vibe, their own subcultures.
We had MySpace, bebo, livejournal etc.
A mix of different people, but also different interfaces. You could do different things on each one.
Which is what Activity Pub and the fediverse gives us. We have different social networking applications using Activity Pub.
Which is a wonderful thing. It's opening up the walled gardens, in contrast to the other options.

There's a better way to get fresh thinking. Which is to read stuff outside your normal social group or background.
Reading expands the mind. Generated LLM content doesn't. It copies, it regurgitates with fake meaning.
Not breathlessly write a post about a technology that burns resources to produce a short story, based on what it could scrape from other authors and parrot back.
The editors and that writer should be utterly ashamed of themselves.

After a while those organisations become a part of the establishment, if they weren't already.

Yesterday on my walk, I was talking to a companion about Scouts using proprietary products.
As I said to him, we shouldn't be surprised that an organisation created by a member of the establishment using the tools of the establishment.
It all reinforces each other. Why wouldn't you use Microsoft, you're preparing kids for life in an organisation founded to train the next generation for Empire.
We need newer organisations, different thinking. Then you might get folks using FOSS.
