If you're the node operator then its self-custodial, with the option to add custodial guests. The goal is to let people who prefer a custodial solution keep that as close as possible. Most people share a house/fridge/car with people already, and they'll share a node / channel too.
There's no benefit in Cashu as it's the same scenario with either... if you run your own mint then its self custody, else it's custodial.
ECash is worse UX because there's fragile gateway and settlement layer between it and real Lightning payments, and on the client side you're reintroducing bearer shitcoins thus making the worst combination of trade-offs: a custodial solution that still requires key management.
It's not that Pub is more private, it's just not less, the overall point is that you shouldn't use either for privacy as both are limited by the nodes anonset. Since a node operator has countless ways to deanonymize activity, you simply shouldn't use a custodian you don't trust and ECash doesn't make a custodian you don't trust anymore trustworthy. ECash's privacy benefits would only come at bank or government level scale which is even more dangerous because of how much oversight those mints would have into the flows of the Lightning network... this is why it's so important we make custodians small... ECash is for governments not families.

Most of the benefits come from it being always-on 24x7 but it won't hurt if it goes down from time to time
It'll run on Windows/Mac too but would be a manual installation
I personally recommend an old laptop with clean *buntu install, the built-in battery makes it much less likely the node gets corrupted. Since it uses neutrino a 4GB of RAM clunker with ~20GB of free disk should be adequate (would suggest an SSD at least though)

Cashu/ECash is a bad design choice for this usecase imo, it makes tradeoffs incompatible with fluid mass-adoptable UX because its just layering the management of a new shitcoin as opposed to direct RPC access
Save for enterprise-scale environments, Pub isn't any less private either as it uses ephemeral keys that are blind children not tied to a given identity. A user could have one or many, rotate them, etc. Also with friends/family nodes nodes the anonymity set is so low that becomes the common limiting factor... whitelisting keys would also negate any privacy benefits
If however you are already running a mint, it could conceivably serve as a backend for Pub... while we built on a single implementation to focus on security (LND) we did so in a way that adapters should be relatively simply to implement

Kinda, I think the first page you see (discover) when you land there was a waste of time for us... we did it because it's what people expected to see when visiting a video site not because it adds any real value. The overwhelming majority of our traffic is direct links to content or channel pages.
I plan on replacing it with a landing page that better explains the value prop of the site.
My long range thoughts on the direction of discovery is that ultimately everyone is a curator, who you follow should ultimately dictates what you discover, and that apps will support bring your own algorithms that recommend stuff from your extended social graph.
This won't be possible in a performant/scalable way with existing nostr clients that directly talk to the relays unfortunately. I'm hoping we'll get time to work on a indexer with reproducible results that would enable it... Once we do we'll inject it into LVa and finally get that fully Nostrfied

Nostr's roots are as an iteration on how GUN was used in ShockWallet and Lightning Pages, as a means to have a web-friendly overlay network to connect Lightning to WebApps
This continues to the primary usecase for Nostr today even as a leaner and more flexible successor to GUN.
Users are funneled through the Lightning ecosystem for connecting LN to WebApps: Zap Signaling, NWC, kind 21000, accessing sat monetized services, and and more, is why any users are here to begin with. Heck, even these notes are about Lightning.
Without the network effect of Lightning as a native payments layer, Nostr its just another combination of websockets and json.
Anything that it's capable of is only in context of it making better Lightning Apps, because key-based identities, webservers, and json aren't otherwise novel.

Definitely hope to see other wallets import our kind 21000 proto in the future, but yea they're developed tightly together as the administrators dashboard is embedded into shockwallet
It's installing LND underneath so if you want to manually manage channels that can still be done via lncli. Channel management is however WIP in the dashboard. (Triple tap the logo in the top right and it'll flip into dashboard mode if you're the administrator... not much there at the moment though)
Lots to come ahead, Nostr will be usefull for social-graph based channels, channel marketplaces, and batch coordination to drop channel open fees ~80%🤞

Seems either way you're dropping in a client, so the window.nostr probably doesn't matter in that context as you could use the sanctum client directly just as you would with nip46

It works through onion messages, basically Tor... which as anyone who has tried using it with Lightning can attest is too flakey for real world payments... every hop adds latency and failure probability, it's a completely retarded design
Lightning is private, and Bolt12 doesn't make it any more private... blinded paths, randomized scids, already exist... Saying Bolt12 is more private is a lie by the shitcoiners trying to attack the Lightning spec with it

Custody of small amounts (credit) is inevitable in an economic sense, but ECash isn't additive to that at all, while ECashers position them as synonymous despite solving the wrong problems inhibiting broader adoption of Bitcoin as a MoE
It's not more programmable than any other database, it's actually much worse because of the the abstraction from the underlying asset
The privacy benefits are farcical, particularly in the context of small nodes, and treating it as a new payment spec is deleterious to interoperability
If the goal is to have shared friends and family nodes for Bitcoin as a MoE, then Lightning.Pub is superior to mints in every way

A database account can just as easily be a random set of numbers, that transacts atomically disassociated from other random numbers, logless, encrypted, and so on
There's no difference except that the database is reliable, performant, and doesn't lie to lull users into a false sense of privacy whilest slipstreaming edollars into the bitcoin ecosystem
You are 100% trusting the operator in both scenarios, and you should never trust an ECasher

For starters super just yesterday confirmed an implementation wasn't even doing basic mitigation for key tweaking (tainting mints to correlate to user metadata)
Even with that mitigated, your still trusting a server not to use its upper hand to deanonymize you... Better to just use a database you trust directly without the bullshit, can always use ephemeral keys for access
We do this using nostr notes only in lightning.pub
