Urgent! Any lawyers here? My friend is being extorted her bank and needs help. She is in a village UP. Her family is not formally educated and the took a loan and are accruing fines and defaulting. I will be fundraising for the repayment but the problem is the bank is not giving her original loan documents or agreements, are asking her to pay random “fines” without receipts and made her father sign a blank form. Friends, especially friends in academia who have to read a lot and constantly, how do you make time and space to properly engage in news and long-form journalism? I have managed to establish somewhat of a consistent morning routine. However I am unable to integrate reading the news or just essays.
One problem I run into, i suppose, is that I take time for reading assigned texts. It takes a lot of energy for me to read, make notes and digest them in a way that I can apply them for my assignments. And by the time I am done with my homework I have no energy to spare for any other form of comprehension.
But I still want to carve out some energy and bandwidth for non-academic reading.

Have shortened my pomodoros to 20 minutes. How tf do people do this? ADHD is killing me. It’s not that I am not interested in what I am reading, but it takes so much effort to sit still.
I am reading White Skin, Black Fuel for class. It’s a great book but section one is just facts page after page. Section two is theory, and apparently better. I think social scientists need to structure their books better, especially if these books are intended as calls to action.

This book I am currently reading: The Specter of Materialism: Queer Theory and Marxism in the Age of the Beijing Consensus by Petrus Liu, is poorly edited but so insightful.
I am just on the first chapter, and it is a little jargon-heavy, but what I understand from it so far is that queer theory as it has developed has not been able to incorporate materialist analyses. Not only that but it also has in many ways treated non-cishet communities in the Global South as less developed versions of non-cishet people in the Global North, US to be precise. In its effort to not apply a colonial universalism to queer and trans populations of the third world, it has inadvertently excluded them while positioning certain groups as "authentic local subjects" or as "modernized or inauthentic"
In the next chapters he will be exploring the underdevelopment of the Global South and the rise of China in the world order and it's impact on the queer trans communities in CHina (i think?) super excited!

I have been very knee-jerk opposed to the decolonial discourse because of how fash it is in India and honestly doesn't make sense in my context at times. But through constant interaction with my classmates and certain profs, I am starting to understand it's value. I still feel it is theoretically weak if it can be co-opted so easily by fascists but hopefully with constant, good-faith engagement it becomes less so.
Today a guest lecturer explained colonialism in class as a way that reorganised people in the world, and that neocolonialism and other exploitations build off of this reorganisation, and everything suddenly clicked and fell into place in my brain. She was brilliant.
I think I now understand decolonisation as an effort , materially and epistemologically, to undo that hierarchy and dispossession. I know this sounds obvious but it feels like new knowledge to me hehe.

My state in India - Maharashtra is going to increase working hours for the private sector to 10 hours a day. This is apparently to aid employees who are already working more than 10 hours but are not being compensated. But fuck we all know it’s for the “ease of doing business”. Fascism and capitalism are so heavily intertwined.

So I sent myself a courier from India and it reached two days after I reached. But I was in a seminar so they went back. Next time they tried to deliver, I was at home (!) But they did not call me, or maybe they did but got the country code wrong. The DHL lady said that if the third time they do not get me, my courier will be sent back with return charges. Land Guns Caste Woman is one of the best books I’ve read this year. Absolutely gripping.
It is a window into erstwhile Andhra, particularly Hyderabad in terms of its progressive movements.
Communists in India have been such a let down. Such such such a let down.
Anyway, if you are interested in Telugu radical literature and the anti caste and communist movements in AP please read this book! I cannot recommend it enough.

A take I really disagree with is: “streaming has spelled death for owning art.” The take basically speaks to how we no longer own CDs, mixtapes, tapes, etc. I think that’s the weakest criticism of the current ecosystem. Tbh I do not want to own a lot of books and CDs. It’s wasteful. I would much rather have access to a well-resourced and well stocked library and borrow things from it. I understand owning a few books/movies that will be re-read/watched again and again. Or albums that will be listened to in loop. But most times we don’t do that.
It is also better for the planet that we do not hoard so many things.

The digital India thing is such a farce. One of my friends who is not digitally adept and is only comfortable in Hindi is struggling to fill a form for a government job. The website is not translated. For all the Hindi imposition these fuckers do, I cannot believe they haven't translated the mobile version of this jobs portal into Hindi. My friend doesn't have a laptop, cannot afford to do this in a cyber cafe and her phone does not have enough space to download the app.
There are so many barriers to applying for this job that even I am struggling to support her through it.
The digitalisation of India has been an cruel and effective way of excluding thousands of Indians from jobs, schemes, and benefits.

No this is just the PR he is doing so people don't get mad about how Khan Academy is just going to do what other companies are doing with AI. Integrate it into their products, perhaps even employ it to create content. They haven't disclosed the complete details yet.
He has been giving many interviews about how AI would revolutionise education. Even a TED talk he gave.
