Around 31/32k, like a switch had been flipped, all power left my legs. From one stride to the next, my strong running simply died. My stomach objected to more water or more gels.
But curiously, I remained mentally strong and somewhat in control. I knew exactly what happened, what would come next, and what I needed to do. This was the moment I had trained for, the challenge I had signed up for. I had chosen this.
Still, it hurt.

Care less about the metrics - you're only competing with yourself. Focus instead on the enjoyment you get out of #running.

This run was supposed to be a celebration.
Instead, it was a series of challenges. Snow, slush, soaked shoes, headwinds, heavy legs, cold, clouds.
I flipped the script. I had done this before. I had chosen to do it. I told myself to enjoy it. I did.
Overcoming a challenge is what makes a win. I struggled, and the run was a series of wins.

Good morning!
I did a run, where I focused on keeping the effort just a little harder than I usually would. It was fun, and if I had not had to get back to get the family out of bed I would probably have gone on for five more km.
The mornings are getting brighter (though not yet warmer), and today I even heard a bird sing. Spring is coming, indeed. What a time to be alive.

To mix things up, I took the train to Friheden and ran home this morning.
This turned out to be a difficult one, as most of the pavements and bicycle lanes were covered by a soup of snow, slush, and salt, and underneath it was a layer of ice. I'm not a big fan of #running on slippery surfaces; NO ICE!
A run is a run, nonetheless, and this was good training.
This was also stage 50 of #52weeks52halfmarathons.

With the snow, the lights, the silence and calm of the world not yet awake, and Brahms' "Ein deutsches Requiem", this was a majestically beautiful morning run.
It was also hard, because I had to plow myself through 10-15cm of fresh snow for much of the run, and it was challenging and fun.
It was just what I needed.

Bad news: #ParisMarathon is off (for me).
The combination of an excrutiating workload the next half year and sickness in my immediate family means that I had to cancel my travel and withdraw my participation. No need to sugarcoat it: it sucks! I had really looked forward to it, but the ends just do not meet. I feel very sorry for myself today.
I did a run this stormy morning nonetheless. Ever onwards.

Stage 49 of #52weeks52halfmarathons.
This was a difficult run with hard winds and snow blowing; with wind chill, it was a freezing -16°c. So today, I trained endurance. #EveryRunHasAPurpose
Despite (or because of) the low temperatures, this was a beautiful countryside morning. And being able to stay in control and even increase the pace throughout the last 6k (where I ran against the wind) was a major win today.

This night, we had quite a lot of snow (by Danish standards), so this morning run turned out to be a somewhat technically challenging one. But challenges are fun, and I got to enjoy the beauty of the quiet morning. This is my meditation; I am recharged.

It was a dark and terribly stormy morning, and to the beat of LCD Soundsystem's "45:33" I did a fartlek:

- warm-down until I got home

I'm in Tromsø, north of the Arctic Circle. I had hoped for a spectacular weekend run under the aurora borealis - but the roads are too icy for outdoor runs to be safe so I must use the hotel threadmill. If there were ever a downgrade from expectation to reality, this is it.
Still, a run is a run, and I got to play around with pacing. And the northern lights were amazing Friday night. All is good.

Because of family plans, I did stage 47 of #52weeks52halfmarathons this morning. It was a bit too icy for my liking, and a streak of red lights broke my rhythm in the beginning of the run - but apart from that, this was a nice break from grading papers.
If all goes well, my weekend run will be a spectacular one. Fingers crossed.

To make ends meet, I changed my routine and did an evening run. Running this late usually does not eork very well for me, but this one was fun (and hard).
The first half was just an easy run to go pick up my daughter from a playdate - but as she was on a bike, the second half turned into a tempo run through the melting snow. Not super fast, but enough to push me a bit.

A pristine and most beautiful morning. Also a very cold one. But I did a nice long run, stage 46 of #52weeks52halfmarathons.
These days, I play around with the hydration vest I got for Christmas from my mother-in-law. It's a Salomon 12 Adv Skin (recommended by @npub1pwa…yw5r, thank you!), and so far I'm most happy with it. But I do look forward to not wearing a reflector vest on top of it...

This week's long run was one of the most challenging and most memorable ones in a very long time.
It was freezing (with wind chill: -13°C), and I had to plow through 10 cm of snow for almost the entire distance. After 7k, I was toast. This was hard! And it kept on. But I managed, and it was a good experience. I feel like I learned a lot.

While the pizza dough rose, I went for a quick run. This was a short fartlek, and it was both hard and fun.

- to still run at least twice each week
- to break 4:07:00 on the marathon distance
- to run Champagnegaloppen on December 31 in 49 minutes or less
- to still focus on joyful running

Champagnegaloppen done! 10k in 50:45 (official time). The weather was near perfect, and I got into the zone and executed my strategy exactly as I had planned for. This felt good throughout.
These were the last kms of 2025. I'll do a wrap-up later - now I need to get home, shower, polish the music quiz for tonight, and suit up.

On the starting line for the last run of the year: the 10k Champagnegaloppen race in Køge.
It's nice and very informal, close to where I live, organized by the local runners' club. This is at least the 5th year I participate, and it's such a good way to end the year.
#EveryRunHasAPurpose, and true to my philosophy of #running, my plan is first and foremost to have a good time. But to push myself, I've also made sure my playlist is only 52 minutes. :-)

Amazing.
My running is going very well, thank you. My goal for the year is not distance-based; rather, I want to run at least twice each week (and distance counts, a run is a run), race at least one marathon, and generally enjoy it. I am happy when I reach 1,000k, though.
This year, I have covered 1,725k and look forward to add 10 more tomorrow.

Indeed. "Champagnegaloppen" is the name of a piece of classical music, composed by H. C. Lumbye, that is traditionally played on New Year's Eve here in Denmark.

This morning, I took the train to Avedøre and then ran home, just to see something else than what I usually do. And yes, I am aware of the irony: it was dark when I ran in uncharted terrirories, and then the cloudy dawn lit it all up when I got to my home turf...

Oh my!
For the first time in my life, I have won a lottery - so I will participate in the 2026 Half-Marathon World Championship!!
(Along with a gazillion other people. For all practical purposes it is just the Copenhagen Half-Marathon, which I have done since 2019.)
The #ParisMarathon on April 12 is still my primary race of next year. But getting into shape to race the HM fast has just moved up my list of priorities.

I pushed hard to get a fast run in this morning. It worked out well, though I would have loved to go a little longer.
This was the first run of my new shoes. I still use a pair of Nike Pegasus 41, so I couldn't feel much of a difference. But I know these are an improvement.

Boy, that escalated quickly. My easy morning run with quite some hills in rainy Aarhus turned into stage 40 of #52weeks52halfmarathons. At 10k I just felt like #running far today, and YOLO got the best of me.

Morning intervals: 8 x 80 secs of various fast paces. Again, mixing things up on speed runs (and in general) was so much fun.
Due to windchill, it felt like -7 celsius out there (this one's for you, @npub1kwd…v6mv). Cold, but nice and clear.
A minor issue with the #nikerunClub app is that it doesn't count the light running I do between the intervals. It is what it is.

On a writing retreat with good colleagues, I started the day with a run.
This one was technically challenging. The light from my vest reflected in the raindrops on my glasses, making it hard to see were I ran. That combined with some uneven roads made it ... interesting. All in all, this was a run where I collected XP.

An amazing morning run. It was cold (0 degree C), and it was pitch black when I started, but over the two hours the sun rose and I got to watch the world wake up. I spotted hares and a flock of geese, a young deer just 10 meters from me.

Friday was Halloween - and this morning, I went on the "Spooky Speed Run" with Count Bænnætt (aka @npub1jmg…x2np) in the #NikeRunClub app.
At 1k, in the dark and the quite of our small town, I passed a crowd with torches. I think they were on their way to surprise a friend on his birthday, but with John Carpenter synth in my ears it sure was a little spooky.

I signed up for the Paris Marathon on April 12, 2026.
It will be my fifth marathon, the first one outside of Scandinavia. This is one of the races I have long wanted to do, and racing it means crossing an item off my bucket list.
My goal is threefold:
- to enjoy the race,
- to finish it, and
- to break 4h 7m (my PR is 4:14:31).

I want to highlight the profound positive impact of the running community on this platform. I didn't know I missed it before I found it - but now I cannot imagine doing my hobby without you all. You have, literally, made my life better. Thank you!!
In "real-life", I travel a lot and always bring my running shoes. Meeting and greeting local runners in other cities and countries, often just with a nod or a thumbs-up, has made me feel more welcome everywhere; my "tribe" was already there.

This is it: Helsingborg Marathon, now.
I am ready with just the right nervous energy. The weather is windy but fine. I feel good. I don't fear the marathon, but I respect it. I look forward to this.
My goal is to enjoy it - and to stay in control all the way. I'd be happy to beat my PR (4:24:28); I think it's realistic, but all bets are off for the last 10k.

I participated in the DHL Relays this evening together with some good colleagues. I had planned to take it easy and just cover some more ground before the marathon (T minus 10 days) - but I got carried away and soon pushed to run fast. It was not a disciplined decision, and it probably wasn't smart, but I truly enjoyed it.
And I succeeded in doing 10k in less than 50 minutes, which is a big(!) deal for me. My app says 49:56, official timekeeping 49:34.

A wondefully challenging run in one of the most beautiful areas of Denmark, namely Mols Bjerge (where my brother lives with his family).
This was 30k with quite some wind and 742 m Elevation Gain - which is basically unheard of in a country as flat as Denmark. It was hard, and I had to fight (and to stop by Molskroen for a glass of water; thank you), but it was great.
Now: birthday celebration! Not mine, though.

A long morning run in what turned out to be headwinds and light rain. I struggled, but I got through it.
Several milestones reached today. 3,000 km covered since April 1, 2023, when I took up #running again. My 299th run in that same period. And it was the 20th consecutive week of doing a half-marathon (or longer).

Ready for #BridgeRun2025, a half marathon from Denmark to Sweden across the Øresund bridge. The scene will be spectacular; I count on it to be a very special race.
My form is good. For almost four months, I have run a HM or more each week, so I am ready. But #running on a long bridge means a different kind of exposure to sun and wind.
My HM personal record is 1:52:42. I do not plan to attempt improving that today - but I do plan to enjoy myself!

I finished the Copenhagen Marathon in 4:24:28. This is a new personal record.
This race constitutes a substantial personal victory for me. I had a plan, and I executed it. When I was in trouble, I adapted.
My goal: to cross the starting line ✅
My hope: to enjoy the race and finish ✅
My pipe dream: to beat my personal record (4:38:25) ✅
Today, I feel very good. Proud and grateful. No sore legs. I might even go for a run...

When you turn the last corner of the Copenhagen Marathon, it’s about 0.5km to the finish line. You can see it coming closer, and the support from the crowd is massive.
On the homestretch, I couldn’t help but celebrate. Picking up the pace, cheering the crowd, being completely in control.
This was a victorious, emotional, and almost transcendent moment for me.
Every road I had run had led me here.

At around 40.5km, as I turned the corner to Østerbrogade and the final stage of the race, I regained control and ran the race I wanted to. Tired, yes, but also energized by the crowd and the fact that I was almost there.
With less that 2km left, I knew I could do this; it’s just the distance from home to my local bakery. I steadily picked up pace, visualizing the final strides, knowing now that I would finish #Cph42 strong.

At around 35km, my stomach began to hurt. Drinking water was a struggle, and energy gels were out of the picture. At some point, I even contemplated “tactical vomiting” to clear my stomach – but I also quickly rejected this horrible idea. For the next kms, I would alternate between #running very slowly and walking. I still knew I would finish, but I was under pressure now.
Things got better. Experience and my mental approach helped me.

Around 30km in, I had to pee. Until now, everything had been smooth sailing, but of course my legs and feet started feeling sore. Still, the execution of my initial race-plan worked A+.
Finally, by the Royal Theater at 33km, there was a toilet. The logistics of getting to it behind a fence were a bit complicated, however, and this took more time than it should have.
Still, I had a good feeling about everything.

Around 5km, my colleague Liisa and her fiancé cheered.
At 24km, someone yelled my name – and there was my wife and daughter!! I knew they would come to Copenhagen to support me, but I didn’t expect them this early. What a wonderful surprise. I got a hug, a kiss, and a peeled orange. It was glorious.
At 28km, they were there again. And again at 34km, where they had a peeled banana ready for me (pic is earlier in the thread).

The first half of #Cph42 was a celebration. The crowd was amazing. Thank you, Copenhagen!
At 19km, a little girl high-fived me and yelled: “I hope you will win!” Now that is the kind of support you dream of, and it gave me a boost.
Only seconds later, I heard her yell the exact same message at another runner. What has the world come to if you cannot trust little girls cheering at marathons? Still, all was good. Steady pace. Onwards.

For the first long stretch of #Cph42, my #running was just as it should be. Disciplined, my pace on point (6 min/km), my energy intake ran like a clockwork. All according to plan. One stride after another, one song after another in my headphones, one km after another celebrated.
The first 11km, I ran with the 4:20 pacers. But I felt very good and strong (physically and mentally), so I slowly progressed from this group and into the next one.

I would actively pursue enjoying it and having fun through #Cph42. Long runs are hard, but a positive attitude goes a long way as for the mental game.
So whenever a kid held out her/his hand, I would high-five it. I would fist-bump and celebrate every km passed. I would thank the volunteers who handed out water. I would salute the people in the crowds. I would smile and laugh.
All of this came naturally. I had a blast out there.

Yesterday, I ran the Copenhagen Marathon, #Cph42.
It was my third marathon (after #running two last year). I knew I could do this.
My race-plan was to aim for a consistent pace of around 6min/km, knowing I would likely not be able to keep it up through the entire race. But I would go as far as I could, then take it from there. I would stock up on energy with a gel every 5km and have water or an energy drink at each depot.
