Best tool I discovered in a long time: email aliasing services like addy.io or simplelogin.io
Give out a unique email alias to every single site you sign up and if their data gets breaches you always know which one leaked because only they knew of that specific alias.
Also when you get spam mails you can just switch of that one alias and still keep your main inbox.

Global Village saw a potential that this business model might work and put some VC money in. Nothing out of the ordinary. As I only ever heard that the recovery address is passed on to law enforcement by Proton, I am fine with trusting ProtonMail. Don't set a recovery mail/phone number, use a VPN/Tor and you should be fine.
Unless you can provide an instance where actual mails were handed over to law enforcement.

SimpleX recently got the private routing feature which sends out messages over your trusted inbound SMP server. That way you won't ever connect to any servers except the one inbound relay your can set to a trusted one.
If you assume with XMPP that both users are using Tor, than I would say if both users on a SimpleX chat are using Tor with random SMP servers, it's just as secure.
No information can be gained by the SMP servers except that there are messages going out from one queue and that's it.
SMP Servers only ever get to see one side of the communication, never the reply. Add to this the absence of user accounts, you cannot build a social graph and tracking by IP does not work if both sides use Tor.
Interested in your thoughts, but SimpleX over Tor is a much lower barrier to entry than both sender and receiver having to anonymously host a XMPP server behind Tor.
They also would have to run a new XMPP Server per person they contact so as to not link identities by using the same .onion for more than one conversion.

Ich glaube SimpleX.chat ist eine gute Lösung. Einfach in der Handhabe als Instant Messenger und man kann Server selber hosten, oder auf Community Server zurückgreifen für den Fall, dass SimpleX als Firma gezwungen wird, alle Server für EU Nutzer zu sperren. App als .APK runterladen, dann kann man auf seinen Servern auch weiter schreiben, wenn SimpleX die App aus dem Play Store nehmen muss.
Ähnlich optimistisch bin ich bei XMPP oder Matrix: Ist die App einmal installiert und ein eigener Server ausgewählt, kann weder die EU noch der App-Entwickler einen davon abhalten sicher zu chatten.
SimpleX ist nur am einfachsten einzurichten und verbirgt Metadaten am besten.
Zentrale Messenger wie Threema, Signal und WhatsApp können einfacher dazu gezwungen werden EU Nutzer auszusperren, wenn keine Hintertür implementiert wird.

You are not answering the question. If you argue that Google has a backdoor to all mobile phones than no messenger is safe to use.
SimpleX Ltd clearly state that they do not store IP addresses. Don't trust them? Use Tor, a VPN or both. By the way you can enable private routing which routes your outgoing messages over your inbound relay which you can self host and trust. That way your device NEVER CONNECTS TO A SERVER YOU DONT CONTROLL.
I don't know why you shill Threema so much they are in no aspect better than SimpleX.
Your adversity to "Big money" is purely ideological and not based in fact. Threema receives money from government actors (that pay for a good messenger). Does that corrupt them?
Don't just refer to some messenger tier list, do your own research.

For most messengers I would agree but Simplex is designed in a different way.
Don't trust a relay you don't run yourself? Don't connect to it. You can chat using Simplex without ever connecting to a Server not run by you.
And if you do want to connect to your recipient's relay, just use Tor and there is no evidence of where the message came from.

I don't find the funding of VillageGlobal for Simplex concerning. The founder clearly said that VG does not make any operational decisions and they are just an investor. Simplex has had plans on how to monetize corporate clients from the early days and that's what VG is interested in. Returns from that business model.
Besides that: Simplex is open source and you can host your own servers, that way nobody at simplex even knows you use their app and can't get any data from you.

Yes, you do not gain any privacy from the sender but only from third parties trying to identify payments between you two. This is very valuable for donations to NGOs for example. If they posted a static permanent address on their website, a evil government could look up that address and see how much was donated to that party/NGO and where the funds came from i.e. who donated.

In light of the recent takedown of the #samouraiwallet project I published a little tool to locally archive git repos of #freedomtech projects in case they get taken down in the future.
It can do versioned archives using borgbackup and also saves the releases (compiled binaries) and the release page as html (for hashes, changelogs etc.)

Only good if you and your communications partner use Tor. Otherwise my ISP/your hoster knows we are communicating whenever my IP connects to the SimpleX/XMPP ports of your server's IP.
If I connect to Signal servers there are so many potential users I might be texting it is harder to track from the outside.

Ich habe ja keinen Einfluss darauf, welchen der sechs Verwahrorte der Einbrecher jetzt durch Zufall findet. Wenn er einen Ort mit Seed in Stahl findet, ist es ja kein Problem, wenn am gleichen Ort auch das Hardware Wallet liegt, auf dem dieser Seed gespeichert ist.
Oder wie machen das Leute, die einen SeedSigner für MultiSig nutzen? Die haben ja gar keine HWWs zu verstecken, sondern nur Seeds.
Beim SingleSig verstehe ich den Grund das Stahl Backup an einem anderen Ort wie die HWW aufzubewahren, für den Fall, dass eine Location abbrennt. Aber diese Redundanz habe ich bei MultiSig ja automatisch gebucht.
Kurzer Austausch dazu würde mich sehr freuen. Super Folge ansonsten! ✌️

For anonymizing larger amounts, where Lightning might not be the best fit, I think swapping into XMR and then swapping back into BTC on-chain in multiple time-delayed TXs to different addresses might be another way.
Should we split XMR>BTC swaps into common UTXO sizes like those used by Whirlpool? That would help make it harder for the swap provider to pick out an individual and their resulting UTXOs.

Basically I would want a complete copy of the git as well as the releases, webpage, READMEs and perhaps issues and PRs.

This looks really useful! Swap fees to liquid have gone down substantially and this allows newbs to use lightning without having to worry about channels and liquidity.

Muun is not really a lightning wallet but an on-chain wallet which swaps all incoming lightning txs into on-chain txs and when you pay using lightning, you send on-chain to swap into lightning and have the invoice paid for you.
No more efficient than paying on-chain for everything.

Halving confessions: I set an alarm for 40mins before the estimated time of block 840.000 to get some sleep as I had to work early in the morning.
Miners did a lil sprint and I woke up 6mins late 😑.
Missed it but still saw the nice halving block animations on my own mempool instance.

Same here. I immediately noticed a positive effect on well being from not constantly having my school mates cool parties and awesome moments shoved down my feed.
If you are laying on the sofa on a lazy Sunday, seeing these curated awesome moments in someone else's live made me feel like I was missing out or living a boring life, when that was not the case. Social media is always biased to show you only the positive moments of other people's lives.

The problem I see with instant messengers like Signal is the network effect: If Signal were to charge a monthly/per usage fee, I would be willing to pay that, but many people would not. With the walled garden ecosystem that are most messengers nowadays, paid messengers will have a much harder time gaining users and suffer the network effect.
If more open protocols like matrix were common, perhaps I could use a paid server that in exchange does not log my metadata. However I would be chatting mainly with people using free servers and these servers could be logging a lot of the metadata (basically everything except for my connection details such as client used and IP).

I am happily paying money for email hosting so that my emails are not farmed for advertising. Have been with privacy respecting paid providers since 2015
I will happily pay money for instant messaging if the app respects my privacy and does not log metadata. I paid for Threema licenses, although I don't use the messenger on a daily basis.
I will happily pay money for ad-free privacy-respecting search results. I was using DuckDuckGo for years now, but just found out about kagi.com and am testing them now. Paying a small amount of money (over lightning) for unbiased well-indexed search results sounds well worth it!
All of these services cost a lot of money to host for the providers, and you know the saying: either you are paying for the product or you are the product.

Time between request to load post A and post B is time spent on post A.
Could be avoided by loading posts in aggregate. Like 10 or more at a time. Then you just know that this time was spent looking at the 10 but not which specifically.

Fiat ecash is an okay idea if it weren't for the state 😆.
More bullish on some sort of stable sat. You would find plenty of places to redeem for physical fiat and be unruggable if you hold it in self-custody.

Not directly. You can use a swap service such as Boltz. Wallets like Phoenix also let you swap between on-chain and lightning for a small fee all without you having to manuallz swap. Just scan an on-chain Bitcoin address and your lightning wallet will send the desires amount.

Public data shows that there are around 1.8 Mio BTC on exchanges and another 880.000 in the ETFs. Where are you getting your 90% of custodied coins from? Other way around is more accurate.
