This honestly makes me sad.
I have been in Bitcoin almost as long as Luke may be exactly as long.
Luke has been one of the most important contributors to the project from the very beginning.
He has a natural strong bent towards contrarian and adversarial thinking. He tends to believe and act in the extreme.
I believe he cares about what Bitcoin is deeply and probably even sees the project as something that would protect against evil currencies in the digital age.
I agree with him on so many parts of why he is fighting.
This is not a minor loss to Bitcoin.
But Bitcoin is not about one guy.
Sigh.

Wine is one of the best paid relays (more than one). I used it for a couple years myself. But I also run my own relay nowadays and have for over a year as well. And it is certainly possible to have a small number of relays that give you reliable, good service.
You are absolutely welcome to use my relay without any charge, although I guarantee nothing. It has been working quite well for some time now.
The only catch is I have it down temporarily since it shares the same mechanical drive as my blockchain and fulcrum instances. And fulcrum is finally in the 90th percent range of sinking, so in the next day or so, I'll be bringing the relay back up. Like I said, feel free to use it. Maybe it will help.

#CoinKite cannot come back from this.
Even if they could rebuild the lost trust the company AND principals (due to negligence piercing the LLC/corporate protections) are going to be sued into oblivion.
The only HONORABLE move @nvk and @coinkite can do is simple:
They should FULLY make both the hardware and software 100% open source. This would allow the community to rescue the existing devices and project from being useless.
This is also the most effective, if not only way for the people behind this debacle to regain a small amount of respect in the community.
And... It is right.
Not holding my breath... I assume the lawyers and liquidators will be running the show soon.

After watching Jameson Lopp mock his customer base, it became easy for me to strike this company from my list. I will never do business with a company with a founder who makes fun of the people who would be his customers.
Some of us will not forget.
There are other companies that do this same kind of job, but are led by people who have respect for others.
I suggest that anyone interested in forging a business relationship with a company that's doing something as important as helping them custody their Bitcoin should make sure that they're comfortable with the people leading it. To be honest, I think we've seen enough of what that kind of leadership begets even in recent days.

I want to say this is an extreme take and it is really, but it sure resonates right now.
At the same time, I want to know where the line is between scams, mistakes, grifters, even ones who don't know they're more or less one of those things and people just using a tool.
You could say the same thing about who gets to drive a car or who gets to use a gun. In fact, people do. And I'm not sure if we're attacking the right thing or the wrong thing in a situation like this.
But it is worth dedicating serious thought to.

Yeah, and I think there's probably lots and lots of people on here that are ready for it. It's not like you got to be in a special club, but I could just see some of the less technical people tripping over some scary stuff and then not being able to find what they do with their Bitcoin.
I do think Craig the developer has added some more warnings and such in certain areas.

I have been seeing #Sparrow wallet mentioned a lot for use in recovery and for ordinary users to download so they can move coins to a hot wallet, etc.
First of all, let me say this is my favorite Bitcoin wallet.
But it's actually very similar to the Coldcard in that it is an extremely complex piece of software. When you're making your wallet, you can choose derivation paths, for example.
Sparrow really is for the passionate and the power users.
Perhaps someone else knows a easier to use wallet that runs on Windows and Mac.
Something like Blue Wallet may be good for a temporary hot wallet. @bluewallet

Well, that's an interesting question. Navigating the checksum word is not difficult if the other 23 words are in the hardware device, then it's not wrong to allow it to do the checksum. I think there's only 12 of those possible for a 24-word seed. So if you've got 23 words, it's going to be easy to find the money.
And though using air-gapped hardware to do calculations is close to best practices, it also has its own set of risks. A lot of people who might think they know what they're doing, they're don't and could end up in trouble.

100 dice rolls is almost certainly safe. In that situation, you're just trusting that the algorithms on the device that interpret the dice rolls into your private key are not borked. The situation in which that would be vulnerable is if the code that does the conversion converts into a limited set of private keys, which would be a similar problem, but there is no random number generator involved with that process, or at least shouldn't be. Well, technically, the only place there might be random number generator input would be for the checksum word, word number 12 or 24.
Also, I wouldn't do any of that until the firmware was all the way upgraded.
In my opinion, the hardware is still what it always was. It's good hardware. I don't trust any hardware with making the seed phrase. I've always made them manually.

Your entropy is still reduced, but the number of possible combinations is increased.
IOW, you all suffer from the fact the pool of private keys is (MUCH) more limited. But to move funds you'd need the right combination of three of them. (2 xprvs and all three xpubs).
You are safer, but if I were in your shoes I'd CAREFULLY move the coins. A Bip 39 passphrase helps quite a bit but is one more way to complicate and therefore shoot self in foot. 😁 whatever you do take care to do it well.

Some of these people combing the code, as you say, will next be combing through likely addresses.
It looks as if entropy was severely reduced.
In my opinion, if someone reading this produced their private key via the cold card, they should not trust that private key.
Whatever the extent of this issue, the way that an exploit can work is by narrowing down the possible private keys because of the busted entropy.
But Evans, advice here to take your time and be calm and careful is of paramount importance. It is probably more likely to shoot oneself in the foot than it is to have your keys guessed.

Okay, I think this post makes me need to go read hodlnauts publishings.
I've been running knots for a year, and I did signal for BIP 110 by default for a while. But I've dropped back down to Core 29.
I do not support ending up in a hard fork over this particular topic at this point. Period. And I do not see how this path does not end up there with a minority chain.
But I am constantly trying to sharpen my understandings of the situation.
I have heard a lot of stupid garbage from both ends of the argument, and I've heard some good concise points.
But like I said, I will go look up what Bitcoin's old friend was having to say about it.

It's sad. I think I have been one of the biggest fans of the Jade. I've always enjoyed the way that they handle security and the private key.
But I have to admit, a lot of the drama that's happened over the last year or two has sort of soured me on supporting businesses who call a certain percentage of their potential customers stupid over and over again online.
As a well-meaning Bitcoiner who's not very political or drama-focused it just tastes bad.
Not sure if it will actually have an impact outside of me as a customer, but maybe something to think about.

It even has two NVMe slots so I'm pretty sure I can mirror it up right away. I just have to spend a lot of money on drives.

Well, it was a drive failure, and the static channel backups were what enabled me to claim the SATs. That, and honest channel partners. But the node was run in a physical proximity to me on my hardware. The rescue happened on a VPS in Europe.

Well, his absence created a "vacuum for grifters". We couldn't "stay humble" without him guarding us from grifters over there.
I have respect for Mr. Odell, but he is a black and white idealist who trips over his perfectionism dick frequently.
And he's arguing with someone who's even more of a binary thinker than himself.
You will notice that Luke achuallly never said bitcoinners would be pedos. Rather that they would be forced to distribute CSAM. So, as a binary thinker, he also feels compelled to shout liar.
If Bitcoin can't survive this, then it could never have survived in the first place. Also, unfortunately, I think it's inevitable that at some point we're going to see a fork and the whole world's going to freak out and the people who were here in 2017 will be saying hang tight, hang tight. It's going to be gross. This might not be that event, but we're eventually gonna see it.

Ah-ha! Well the btc/ln node itself is run on minimal hardware sitting on a local network I have access to.
But the invoice generation is handled by LnBits on a VPS (5250 miles away) connecting via a VPN tunnel to the node.
This seems like a fairly secure architecture. I actually started out with zerotier as the VPN and then went to a vanilla wire guard setup. But honestly, I think even zero tier should be pretty good, since traffic is encrypted.

The one that you show a screenshot of, as well as another one I may have seen, include the purchased device as a "Coldcard Calculator." that sounds to me like something that might be declared as a package contents or the like. I've been following your recent grump posts on nostr with interest.
And I think I'm getting your general drift pretty well, but I'm not sure if I completely understand the key to your point that you're making.
I see Nostr has a very interesting toy for people who live on the technological edge.
It's kind of like ham radio, which has never been a serious communication channel in the sort of day-to-day use. And yet to this day, Ham ends up saving lives in situations where it is needed, kind of like what happened in the mountains of the Appalachians after the hurricane. I think it is the lowest common denominator aspect of the communication method that makes it continue to be relevant even though 99% of the time it's just a hobby for antenna nerds.
Nostr seems to be lowest common denominator coms for data on a network. In fact, I believe you could relay things over a radio if you wanted.
So if we're looking at it as the replacement for mainstream social media, well, that is a hopeless idea because people are too stupid. (lots to unpack there, but I'm already writing a tome.)
I quite like the protocol and it is my daily driver's social media and I am willing to pay the cost of it continuing to be the bathroom stall door as you put it.
