Just a phenomenal week of gaming in the BrakeOut household
It's the last week before the kids go back to school, so we:
⚒️ Created a fun settlement with the boys in Minecraft (the Vibrant Visuals update is just 😍)
🔫 Savored some Smash Bros-style chaos with them over dozens of rounds of Bopl Battle
👩‍🚀 Actually got a pretty good colony going in Oxygen Not Included (made it cycle 50 so far, which is major progress!)
🌌 the new NMS Voyagers update just looks incredible
And then Jump Ship coming out in a few weeks? Man - good time to be a gamer!

Rolled credits last night on "Gris" - just an absolutely lovely poem of a game.
The gorgeous watercolor art style is the easiest piece to highlight, and it deserves all of the laurels it receives. (It feels like the Gwen Stacey segment of Across the Spiderverse may have cribbed some ideas from this game, to both of their benefit.)
I don't see enough said about the gameplay, though. Original character capabilities, paced perfectly to tie into the feeling of the story, and handed to the player in a way that's understood through gentle exploration. Each level very different but intuitive, designed to pull you forward through the intrigue of discovery. And no violence - just the character working against her own challenges made manifest.
It's a perfect example of video game as art - beautifully done.

If you're interested in evolution and artificial life, I can't recommend Gridworld highly enough.
It's not the prettiest game, but it's a fascinating little idler sim that evolves pixel-sized creatures using sensors, motors, and neural network controls, and lets them loose in a simple 2D world.
"Cool" doesn't quite capture the feeling you get from letting it run for a bit, and watching your world evolve from basic DNA generation to real little creatures that move, reproduce, and interact.
Did I mention it's under $1?

I know I clowned on this the other day, but I have to genuinely acknowledge that Peak is a great little co-op game for all ages.

I don't know. It's a real hole in ActivityPub that there's no way of enforcing good management on any downstream servers. I don't know how to do that without cryptography or similar, which still involves trust.
It also sucks that there (apparently) isn't a standard PHP lib for ActivityPub that would have prevented this problem.
I'd agree that the Fedi is overpopulated with territorial scolds. It still shouldn't be too much to ask for OSS writers to follow decent dev practices.

I love the idea of Expeditions in NMS - the unique experience shared across NMS gamers, a way to keep the game fresh and vibrant over time
What I don't love is all of the gamers building bases! Leaving notes! Dropping save points everywhere! Cluttering up the place!
This makes it difficult to follow the expedition narrative and makes the HUD much harder to use.
Enjoy the experience, folks...but clean up after yourselves. Don't leave all your poop on the mountain.
