I enjoyed listening to Michael Palin’s Erebus, about the polar explorations conducted by the ship of that name, and its companion ship HMS Terror. They were bomb ships created at the end of the Napoleonic era, present at the shelling of Baltimore (?) during the war of 1812. Whatever battle the Star-Spangled Banner commemorates.
They were retired from naval service not long after being launched, almost being obsolete as soon as they were built, but their reinforced hulls were ideal for plowing through sea ice. Incredibly, they did so under sail alone. HMS Erebus was discovered in the Arctic in 2016 or so and HMS Terror not long after. Their voyages all sound harrowing but particularly the last, of course. Conrad mentions them in Heart of Darkness. There are all sorts of lively characters and of course the usual preening superiority towards past attitudes and practices.
I think one of the favorable qualities of the historical books I most enjoy is that they do not allow a contemporary perspective to intervene and attempt to demonstrate “our” superiority to the people of the past. The author's voice is totally subsumed into the characters’. I find the interjection of authorial voice so irritating as to cause me to stop reading the second I detect it. I tried listening to Erik Larsen’s new book on the start of the civil war but made the mistake of starting with the Introduction and had to return it.
A new rule I’m considering putting into place is to never, ever, ever read introductions, and perhaps even avoid books that contain them entirely.

Good to know! Very good idea, I’m certainly willing to spend some time with the onboarding. That amount seems higher than what I was expecting with this level hardware, but with the setup process, that makes sens.
I should specify, I am not looking for profit so much as a sense of what people would see as a reasonable investment on their part to get started with a bitcoin & lightning node and a personal server.

All, a quick request for some feedback:
Recently I acquired some classroom desktop computers that are no longer needed, and would never be capable of running Windows 11. They're HP computers, mostly, with 125GB SSDs. They seem ideal for self hosting a personal server, and I have been successful getting #StartOS working on one of them after a RAM upgrade to 16GB, to future-proof it for the bitcoin stack. Obviously a larger SSD would be desirable but that's an easy upgrade if it's wanted.
What do you think someone would be willing to pay for such a device?

Agreed that Start9 docs are second to none. Also, their Telegram channel has excellent support from their team.
My suggestion is to start with a few core services and start to build your way up slowly.... Self hosting is a long transition and requires making a lot of changes and figuring out what your needs and capabilities are. Not everyone is the same. Give yourself the time to consolidate news habits and shift your expectations. It's a very enjoyable challenge.

I just need to get something off my chest.
My city built a new airport a year ago that demolished the 1960s "cutting edge" jet age shamrock-style terminals that allowed near instantaneous access to the gates from the drop off point. In its place is a big, boxy TSA theatre, and a parking garage attached. Despite the billions poured into it, they didn't think to put in a pedestrian bridge so that all vehicle traffic through the terminal didn't need to be stopped by a guy with a whistle and a reflective vest every single time someone wanted to cross to or from the parking garage.
Hideous.

Finding consistent, regular time to set aside for prayer is also really helpful. It is as much about quieting oneself to be able to listen as it is speaking about what's on the mind and heart, though it is that, too. I highly recommend a chapter of the Gospel of Mark per day with a simple expression of desire to get to know Jesus as he is, without substituting our own prejudices or letting our pain stoke our anxieties.
I'm praying for you now, brother! For whatever it is you need most.

It has been a challenging historical lesson provided by a great friend, Dr. Ezekiel Stear of Auburn University. His persistent line of investigation throughout his career has been in search of an answer to the question: “How did Mexico become Mexico?”
His abundant knowledge has significantly altered my understanding of the “primitive” civilization that the Spanish evangelized in the 16th century, as well as the real collaboration and mutual respect that existed between the Nauha and the Franciscans in certain parts of New Spain—something approaching an ideal.
Of course, much of the story did involve mistreatment, deception, cruelty, and greed, on the part of both cultures. Human beings have not changed very much, ever.

The possibility of signifcant increase in buying power for bitcoin is not simply a function of its speculative nature. Buying and holding bitcoin for principled reasons is actually quite difficult and represents significant risk--the factors at play are more than just personal gain and storing the value of one's labor, but also a more sound monetary asset and the separation of money and state. The possibility of significant gain represents an incentive to help motivate those who take these risks to take them both prudently and courageously, and to persevere in the face of extreme difficulty and distraction. That is no small thing. A dictum in this respect would be: Show me the incentives, and I'll show you the outcome. Bitcoiners are serving a noble good and the possibility of monetary gain is one factor among many important factors that helps to incentivize what would otherwise be unimaginably difficult for most people.

I also think the idea of intrinsic value is a distraction in this discussion. Correct me if I'm wrong: in the sense you're using it here, "intrinsic value" means "good for something other than being used as money, and therefore [more] free from speculative abuse". But the claim is that bitcoin is a new form of money that creates digital scarcity through the binding of real world energy expenditure to an immutable distributed ledger in order to secure it from attack and recalibrate the accuracy of the price signal. Digital scarcity is such a profound innovation that it's hard to make a comparison to other monetary phenomena. "Intrinsic value" is something like a skeuomorph of the prior forms of money that were necessarily physical. A skeuomorph is "a derivative object that retains ornamental design cues from structures that were necessary in the original." But bitcoin is innovative precisely because it eliminates the need to bind scarcity to physicality, offering pure scarcity in the digital realm by the capture of energy through proof-of-work.

SecureSafe was my app of choice before switching to self hosted Vaultwarden.
SecureSafe worked great. And can integrate well into all platforms and browsers. Also had an inheritance protocol included,b which I now miss.
Vaultwarden isn't as functional but is very easy to use if running your own @Start9 machine.
I also think ProtonPass is worth checking out.

Good questions. Off the cuff, I'd say that one's reasons for learning about and holding bitcoin may vary. But the intentions behind the creation of Bitcoin obviously draw on moral sources, especially the devastating effects of unsound money on society and the need to separate money from state. (See Hülsmann's THE ETHICS OF MONEY PRODUCTION.) This in my view is the determinant for the morality of holding Bitcoin even as it is treated as a speculative get-rich scheme by some... which seems far less prevalent among bitcoiners than it does in the spinoff communities that are deeply scammy. By no means is it absent. In the end, I would hold Bitcoin even if it didn't appreciate massively in value. Its qualities as sound money and a savings vehicle for the masses-- an open, permissionless, trustless bearer asset, that cannot be corrupted by any central authority, seems like good enough of a deal to stake one's wealth on in the hopes that it can address the deep and hidden injustices of the current system.

I believe Mutual of America also has a Catholic Values fund. And, outside the huge investment company umbrella, one of the best smaller investment vehicles is farmafield.com (disclaimer: I know the owners and have invested with them in the past)
Were it up to me, 100% of my savings would go into bitcoin. I have come to believe more and more in the "voting" power of holding bitcoin and focusing on living rather than becoming a part time investor doing research into abstruse company filings and completely out of one's depth: a point first conveyed quite powerfully to me by Saifedean.

A setting in Nostur allowed me to turn on AUTH for my paid relays and we are back in business, connecting just fine now.
No other client I am using had that setting, from what I could tell (Amethyst, Coracle)

I only have experience with @npub126n…e9ll but my experience has been outstanding. I bought a couple different versions of their hardware and have learned a ton, starting from basically nothing—I am non tech. Their customer service is outstanding on Telegram. Once their next OS upgrade comes out I think it will define the standard for self-hosting and ease of onboarding. Look up Matt Hill and listen to some of his appearances on various podcasts (Stephan Livera would be a good example) to learn about their unique ethos.
The developers know their stuff and are breaking new ground in this area…. Very cool to watch.

Man, I am kind of baffled as to why nostr.wine is so rarely connecting. For a paid relay, it's only working about half the time according to Coracle. I am logged in via browser extension. Any thoughts on what I could be doing wrong?
