Finding consistent, regular time to set aside for prayer is also really helpful. It is as much about quieting oneself to be able to listen as it is speaking about what's on the mind and heart, though it is that, too. I highly recommend a chapter of the Gospel of Mark per day with a simple expression of desire to get to know Jesus as he is, without substituting our own prejudices or letting our pain stoke our anxieties.
