Yeah, having been here through the years, the path of explosive growth and adoption has been long, with huge periods of stagnation.
I've seen a lot of people come and go, and one of the biggest reasons people leave, other than weird UX or not finding people to connect with, is the Puritan attitude of the contemporary Fediverse. There's a type of contrarian that just seems to enjoy being annoying and hostile, and it really ruins the vibe.
It's just not fun to have those people creep into your mentions and be rude, simply because you don't share their values or point of view. They've been very effective in bullying people off the network that don't immediately conform to their ways of doing things.

I don't think most of the Fediverse would go for Lightning, due to being largely against cryptocurrencies. However, I'm not against having support for it as a payment option, for those who choose to use it.
One of my favorite ideas that never really took off was Retribute, an idea where people would use metadata to specify which payment systems they used. Systems could pick up which methods a person has available, and opt for whatever method the payer and payee had in common. If there were multiple options, maybe a person could specify a preferred method.
