If there's any #Godot developers out there making 3D games, I could kind of use some help / advice on how to fix this weird issue I'm having.
Camera is basically attached to a SpringArm and mounted on a pivot, the pivot rotation is what's used for camera rotation. When switching perspectives, a piece of code is supposed to line up the pivot rotation to the player_mesh rotation. Except it seems to be flipped when I face certain directions?!

I honestly hate WordPress sometimes. In a minimal install, it's not so bad, but so much of the community advice to get something working is "Just install a plugin!" and suddenly you have 50+ plugins and site that's an eldritch abomination on the backend.

Bluesky absolutely got it right with ATproto: you can make any kind of client, not just microblogging, and it will seamlessly work with your Bluesky identity. Everything you post goes into your personal storage, and the clients that know how to interpret special data types are able to reach into your PDS and the timelines you're following to present that stuff.
ActivityPub API needs to follow a similar story.

Here's the thing: Mastodon already has a really good API. There's a whole ecosystem of clients around it, to the point that many other Fediverse implementations adopted it, so that they can use the apps.
I don't think this is a bad thing in and of itself. But, if we want projects like Mastodon to support it, the value proposition has to provide things that the Mastodon API does not.
I think a killer feature to focus on would be identity management.

I think the #ActivityPub client-to-server API is extremely important and underrated. I'm glad to see the SWF and W3C group prioritizing it, because I think it has the potential to fix something that's kind of broken on the #Fediverse: too many accounts, on too many platforms that really ought to be clients.
Here's the rub, though: you need the big players in the space to support it. Mastodon needs to support it. Pixelfed and PeerTube need to support it.
So, how do you get the big existing projects to all implement it? How do you justify it?

Yeah, our operating costs are rapidly approaching 500 bucks a month. Donations help offset that, but it's been rough for a while.
The server and object storage themselves are relatively cheap, but the overage costs are a nightmare.

Slight griping: if you launch a community instance for a video service, don't give away unlimited storage for free. It's fine in the beginning, but some people will inevitably take advantage of it.
Someone on here uploads live stream videos that are more than three hours long, and has uploaded like a thousand videos over the past three years. I don't think they're malicious, and I'm not looking to punish them...but WHAT THE FUCK.

One pain point here is the fact that Spectra has more than 1,000 users, but about a dozen or so accounts use the most storage space. The biggest offender takes up over 1TB of our object storage quota.
I'm tempted to start setting data caps, maybe to sell an additional allocation of storage space, but I'm only really comfortable with doing this after addressing the community and reaching out to the people who use Spectra the most.

Some, but a strong requirement is that I want the publication to be able to federate. We were pretty much the first publication in the network to do it, and I don't want to give up on that experiment.
I've had some interest in Ghost, but it's too underdeveloped for what I'm looking for. Have also considered working with Bonfire, but that might require a lot of custom development for publishing.
The WordPress ActivityPub integration is quite good, and developed by good people. I'm not above fighting with the presentation system for the short term.

Man, I forgot what a nightmare headache it is to try and work with the Twenty-TwentyFive theme for WordPress. It's something that can make decent-looking websites on the surface, but requires mental gymnastics to figure out.
"Here's some template examples to work with", great, but you give no insight into how to work with Query Loop blocks!
"Here's some example layouts for this part of a page", nice, but I have no idea on how to make a similar layout when I build it from scratch!

Wow, okay, there's actually some really crazy shit in there, as far as tools go. I want to temper my expectations, it's a lot all at once, but there's some really interesting tools for buildings and architecture that might complement some of my experiments with environmental design.
Of course, there's the classic question of "how well does any of this slickly-marketed stuff actually translate to gamedev stuff?" along with the more cautious sense of "is it crap?"

To be clear: I'm not planning on using Unreal Engine for game development myself, that would be insanity at this stage. I'm really enjoying Godot though, and I've been slowly exploring different ways to bring more advanced 3D tools into a workflow that fits well with the Godot engine.
There's a lot of promising stuff! Weirdly, there's a lot of freely available tools and assets for animation, textures, and modeling, but really domain-specific tools just kind of don't exist.

What's kind of frustrating is that attempting to search for smaller-scale projects for Linux does not yet produce much, as these big projects kind of suck all the air out of the room.
There's some promising plugins / tutorials for Blender that might be worth exploring, but I'm kind of bummed about just how much more manual some of these solutions are. Worth learning? Absolutely! More time-consuming and clunky? Yeah...

A lot of professional-grade #GameDev tools for Linux are kind of in this weird half-implemented state, where some version of the software *kind of* exists, but there's a lot of hoops to jump through.
I've been playing with the MetaHuman Creator plugin that exists in the native Linux builds of Unreal Engine for funsies. The plugin itself actually works pretty decently, but editor support for Wayland is kind of half-broken, with menus and popups working in some very weird ways.
After doing some research on supplemental tools, like Marvelous Designer, it seems that a Linux version actually exists, but only exists for an Enterprise-Grade plan at an eye-watering $2,000 per year.

Yeah, Mitra got an Honorable Mention in my writeup, mainly for pioneering this stuff way sooner than any other project did. In hindsight, XMR is kind of an odd choice...mainly because payment moves so slowly.
Mitra has pretty decent UX, though, and its API could be made to use just about anything, provided Instance A and Instance B both support the same thing.

I've been thinking a lot recently about #PeerTube, #Loops, #Bandwagon, and other platforms in the #Fediverse that are geared around artists. I might get flamed for this, and you're welcome to disagree, but I think the network is in dire need of having support for commerce.
Not "Big Capitalism" commerce, but the ability for people to buy and sell things, support projects, and commission their favorite creators to keep making more stuff.

I think if I had to do it all over again with Spectra, I would've done the following things differently:
1. **Data Caps By Default:** everyone can have, say, 25gb or reserved storage per account, with the option to purchase more reserved storage in the app as necessary. There are streamers on the instance who upload hundreds of videos that are easily 1 to 3 hours long each.
2. **Premium Paid Features:** I wouldn't restrict any of the main PeerTube functionality, but certain features like syncing up your entire YouTube account with every video it's ever made would make a lot of sense for a monthly plan. At one point, I tried to offer this to everyone, and loads of people tried to import over a decade's worth of old videos.
3. **Better Outreach:** The whole "if you build it, they will come" strategy of cultivating online communities can be inherently flawed. Historically, I've had pretty much no strategy with reaching out to creators who might be interested in posting their videos to the Fediverse, because
4. **Better Infra:** This is a vague thought, not really defined with specifics. Sometimes, you can't predict what your server is going to look like years and years down the road. At the risk of sounding like some know-nothing, I probably would've looked more into a Docker / Kubernetes setup? The instance itself is not hard to run or do maintenance on, but a more decoupled setup optimized to scale up would probably be a good idea.
5. **More Curation:** I take a very...relaxed perspective on how to manage an instance. Block bad actors, uphold community standards, help people with issues when they crop up. But for the most part, I don't do any curation or community-building. The instance often just feels like a bunch of random stuff, which is kind of a bummer. The least I could do is dig in and add fun stuff to a playlist or something.
I'm saying all this not because I'm in some bad place or lamenting my decisions, just more reflecting on the fact that running a community instance for media is really demanding sometimes.

Took a quick look at my monthly expenses, and it's not looking great. My #PeerTube instance @spectra is getting into the $400 per month range, accounting for overages in Object Storage and Network transfer.
My first thought is that it may be time to look at more sustainable hosting options. Alternatively , I might have to start setting caps on how much storage any account can use before being required to pay for more. Neither prospect feels great. 😞
The community has been amazing for monthly donations, but our rate of growth has rapidly outpaced contributions...

Yeah, it makes me slightly regret building my own bespoke Steam machine for the living room, but I'm just happy to see Valve finally moving in this direction. It's an amazing effort, and with all the work that went into Steam Deck and Proton, I feel very optimistic.

Some elements overlap between those things, like it or not. When it comes to the project of colonization, the spread of Puritanism / Protestantism had a major cultural impact on the United States, but it's not like that was the only place it was happening.
Besides, the main thing to consider in the aftermath of Puritanism is not simply the alignment of sociopolitical values, but the modes of interaction and social dynamics that emerged. This played out into the modern political area in a number of regressive ways, and is more of an exercise in casting judgment and "correcting problems" based on value alignments and whether certain behaviors fall out of the scope of what is deemed "acceptable".

I love the idea of local governments having Fedi accounts. It sounds silly, but the idea of a bunch of local departments being able to get their messages out can actually be really useful. Think about how many municipal accounts post updates on Twitter to keep people informed about local events or developments.

Sometimes, I beat myself up for not learning programming earlier in life. I have like 20 years of experience in scripting for one game engine?
I've messed around with JavaScript and Ruby enough to be dangerous, and largely taught myself through tutorials and StackExchange questions. But, ever since I took a course in Java, certain basic ideas have clicked into place.
I've struggled through it, but my confidence is gradually improving with every new experiment or attempt. If I just generated everything, I'm not sure I would have the same insights that I do now.

Look, I think AI can hypothetically be "useful" in certain specific limited contexts, but relying wholly on AI-generated code for a project is profoundly stupid. I think it's fine for rubber-ducking ideas or exploring a pool of information, but some people use it wholesale without knowing basic fundamentals.
I know learning to code can seem difficult. There's a lot of trial and error, a lot of failure, and sometimes the problem you're trying to solve is way more difficult than you thought it was. This is normal, and part of learning. It's okay if it takes longer, or if you have to struggle with certain stumbling blocks. That's how you get good!
Not everything has to be about maximizing output for productivity, especially if that output has issues that you have no insight or capability of fixing. It is in fact okay to go at a gradual pace.

This is a really great read by the @npub1lzd…urpr team. As someone who has done all kinds of experiments with long-form articles and publishing directly on the #Fediverse, there are a number of headaches and hurdles we still need to figure out.
My overall philosophy is this: rather than adapting existing content management systems to use ActivityPub federation, it's preferable to build a CMS for the Fediverse, with explicit considerations for how the instance and the network should interact with each other. Everything, from the dashboard to side-effects of interaction, should be designed with federation considerations in mind.

It just really sucks, Codeberg is a wonderful project and a decent amount of Fedi is on there now. Devs shouldn't have to deal with onslaughts of LLM spam pretending to be confused and angry users.
I worry sometimes that this is going to inevitably become a larger problem for the Fediverse and community FOSS infrastructure at some point. Can be mitigated to a degree, doesn't change the fact that it's all orchestrated by a bunch of shitheels.

Hey, listen. #Codeberg is being spammed with LLM bots right now. They started like an hour ago. Each bot is opening up one issue in a random tracker every minute.
I have no idea what the spread is, but each individual bot has like seven pages full of issues now. PieFed and FEP are both starting to see issues piling up because of this.

For me, the Holy Grail for Threadiverse looks like this:
* Subscribe to any group on any platform
* Synchronization pulls in x number of topics and replies on initial sync
* Post in one place, your post shows up on the other end in a corresponding spot.
* Lemmy posts that are just Links with a discussion get properly rendered.
* Content looks "mostly" native to the group, as rendered by the platform it is accessed from.
Overall, there's some really promising stuff going on. NodeBB has a really great feature now where users can individually subscribe to remote communities and interact with them, but the bridging aspect could use some love.

Cross-platform Threadiverse stuff is weird. It mostly works really well, but there's tiny quirks between systems sometimes.
One thing I really want to explore is group synchronization. That is, federating topics between different groups on different instances.
In NodeBB, it's possible to make a forum category follow groups on Lemmy, PieFed, and Discourse. However, it sometimes only partially works, and debugging isn't always straightforward.
It's a worthy experiment, though.

1. Our forum now federates with The Social Music Network's forum, allowing members on each to seamlessly communicate. We hope that this will give us better insight to what's going on with the art and music community, and help us get better at reporting what's going on in the space.

I just had a call with the Dokieli team, they're building a thing on Web standards and vanilla JavaScript to revisit Tim Berners-Lee's original browser concept of live-editing Web pages. There's a lot of similarities with what I hope to accomplish with my own efforts.

This is Postmodern, my concept for a #Fediverse platform. This mockup is a builder interface for making your own UI, timelines, and pages visually. It's a weird and ambitious concept, but this is what I've been dreaming about for years.

A few do, Pleroma historically supported it. Not sure if they still do.
Part of the problem is that it's kind of unwieldy to work with. C2S apparently requires developers to handle all logic on the client side, rather than the server. I've also heard that there's vagueness in the spec on how to do certain things.
The Mastodon API ended up being a lot easier to work with, and overtook the client ecosystem. It actually ended up becoming so popular that most Fediverse clients and platforms have adopted it. It's also one of the factors as to why so many Fediverse platforms are full-stack servers, rather than clients.
I personally still think that C2S has potential, it just requires capable hands to implement.

Mostly, I'm thinking of building a community platform project that can offer the following things:
* Search / Discovery of Groups across the Threadiverse
* An Events calendar
* A directory of Fediverse apps, platforms, businesses, and services
* The ability for people to rate and review those things.
* An aggregated news feed covering people writing about the Fediverse
* A marketplace where people can buy and sell things.
* A knowledgebase / wiki / learning system
This sounds like a lot, but *most* of what I'm describing have existing Fediverse platforms today. It's not too crazy to make something compatible with all of them.

It sounds like I'd still have to create user accounts locally, if only to properly represent delegation of actions and fight against spam. But, the idea of automatically creating an account on successful authentication doesn't sound *too* ridiculous.
But, those accounts don't have to be Actors themselves. A Group admin could review submitted Events, and approve them, and the resulting create / announce activities could use the Group Actor as the author...

Kind of a weird thought I've been kicking around...
So, it's possible to use the Mastodon API for sign-in and authentication, right?
Would it be possible to leverage a remote Mastodon account as a user account in a Web app, then give it the ability to create an Activity within the app, without creating a Note on Mastodon?
I've been kind of thinking about having an app where people can sign in and submit `Event` activities to a `Group`. I don't want to create a bunch of Actor accounts, but I don't mind the idea of having a `Group` Actor delegate on behalf of signed-in users with MastoAPI.
If this sounds like "Poor Man's c2s", yeah, that's basically it.

As an experiment, this has been a long time coming. It can be very frustrating sometimes, because you can feel so close to a solution, but just not quite where you want to be yet.
And yeah, I stand by the idea of building a Fediverse-first product. Every path is hard in its own way, but it feels very backwards at times to try and bootstrap a content management system to have social features. Internally, there's not really dedicated pages for timelines or notifications; the dashboard is just the WordPress dashboard.
I've been wanting to build something myself for a long time, but am still working on my confidence when it comes to developing my own thing. Social publishing is a big idea to me, though.

As part of an ongoing effort with We Distribute and #Fediverse advocacy, I'm looking at connecting with other journalists currently writing about the Fediverse, Nostr, Bluesky, and other efforts to build a decentralized social Web.
I think it may be possible, even beneficial, to create a newswire service spanning our different sites and publications, to help keep everyone reporting on this growing space on the same page.

I'm going to touch on this in a longer, more thought-out piece, but: the way we treat developers, particularly ones new to this network, is often garbage.
We're so quick to blame people over things like consent mechanisms or implementation details that we literally bully them off the network, without ever wondering whether there's more to the story. This actively hurts our ecosystem, to the point that it hurts one of the greatest resources for our network.
Have you ever considered that maybe the existing mechanisms are actually incredibly broken, poorly thought-out, and not actually well-surfaced to people in the first place? That there's lots of people that would love certain functionality, but it's never occurred to them that they have to opt-in to use it?

I kind of agree with this. To some degree, you have to rip off the band-aid, and get involved. However, defining form, convention, and medium are all super important for building distinct communities in the space.
The migration of several large Reddit communities to Lemmy were very much a case of matching the existing form of Reddit with the ethos of the Fediverse. #FediverseHouse
