When I pants and it’s beginning to all feel a bit scattered, I note down a rough outline of what I do want to keep and the unwritten things I’d like to happen.
Pantsing is great for brainstorming ideas and exploring character personalities, but it’s very easy to go down wrong paths and have to keep backtracking.

Bilingual signs aren’t really a thing, but it’s something that is slowly growing. I’ve lived in Cornwall all my life and I only know a smattering of Cornish (and a few good swear words).

@nprofile…009v I regularly mute the hashtags because they are too repetitive on my feed. I feel my answers add nothing new and they rarely spark conversations, even when I’ve made an effort to comment on other people taking part.
The character themed Qs are handy when I’m drafting something new, but otherwise I steer clear.

I feel the problem is getting worse. Costs are so high that adults still love with parents because it’s too expensive to rent or buy. People are putting off having children because of costs. No one is earning enough to even save into a pension pot. Retirement age is going up. Hours are increasing as people need multiple jobs just to pay the bills.
Companies and govts are embracing AI which will soon cause massive unemployment levels.
No wonder creativity is dead.

@nprofile…0qap I used to do a lot of photography, and I still enjoy the slow set up in taking the DSLR out, picking the lens and manually adjusting the settings and choosing my shot.
Now photography is widely accessible and a simple point and shoot and edit instantly with a click of a button. The slow set up for many has diminished.
In the last month, I've got into the habit of taking a sketchbook with me and I sit, soak in the scenery and atmosphere, and draw.

Fecking windy today. But I found a nook in the cliffs and sat on the sand and spontaneously wrote about the sea as it was teasy today. Lots of spindrifts on the waves. And I wrote some story ideas and did an awful pen sketch of the beach I was sitting on, but I didn’t care that it was bad because doing it made me happy.

16km beach walk. I did not plan for it to be that long. Walking is my meditation and it seems I needed a long stank to reset my brain. The news makes me so angry. Sometimes I need to remind myself to take moments where I narrow my focus closer to my immediate surroundings.

If you do plan to go down the traditional publishing route then you are likely to receive a ton of rejection. Agents only take on a handful of new writers each year and they receive thousands emails. Even if your writing is perfect, the story might not be one they feel able to pitch to a publisher at that moment in time.
I've been writing for 9 years and only now do I feel my writing is at a place where I feel ready to look for an agent.

I'm extremely sensitive to criticism. However, I don't get so hung up about it when it comes to my creativity because it helps me grow and learn the craft. Perfectionism is never achievable in creativity. I paint, write and photograph and there is a point where I have to decide to stop because otherwise it will never be finished.
What's your goal? Is the writing for yourself or do you plan to trad or indie publish?

Things which help me get into it easier:
1. Have a break between writing and editing so you look at it with fresh eyes.
2. Change the font so you don’t skim over errors.
3. Convert your story into an ebook and read it on your iPad/Kindle, or print it out. The different format helps you spot errors.
4. Read your work aloud to check the flow and find clunky sentences.
5. Beta read for others to help hone your skills.

Men an Tol, Cornwall
A monument consisting of a central standing stone with a manmade hole through its centre positioned between two upright standing stones.
The current arrangement is not its original state and was thought to have originally been a stone circle. The purpose of the holed stone is unclear, but if you pass through it folklore says it will cure ills such as rickets and help get you pregnant.

Look at me and my big rock. 😄
One of “the pipers” near “merry maidens” stone circle, Cornwall. A popular Christiansted folklore attributed to ancient stone monuments is they were once people turned to stone for having fun on a Sunday.
Interesting to discover nearby St Buryan has more ancient stone crosses than any other parish in Britain. So they were REALLY trying to counteract the old religions in these parts.

I love the Oxford Comma. Makes total sense the Haunted Pencil Jacob Reece-Mogg banned his staff from using it. The Tories like confusing language and the Oxford Comma adds much needed clarity.
One example which REALLY needed an Oxford Comma.

Grammar is powerful because it changes the meaning of the words.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.

Slightly off topic for today’s #WritersCoffeeClub question, but I had a lot of fun researching different time keeping methods across the ages. The Roman idea of 12hrs of day and 12hrs of night despite the fluctuating lengths of daylight across the year seems utterly bizarre.
What I do like in some old calendars is the idea of a leap month when everything got really out of kilter. I put that in my WIP and called that month the Wandering Moon.

Text. Numbers look wrong to my eyes among the prose. I find numbers pull me from the narrative and I’d rather the reader forgot reality while reading my story. Unless I’m copying out a visual display with numbers that a character is reading, then I’ll stick with text.

@npub1nql…ecju I’m really sorry to hear about your dad. You mentioned you visited him with family recently. I understand the release. My FIL is in poor health and sometimes it feels it would be kinder if he went sooner rather than slowly faded away.

@npub1nql…ecju I think this was for me? I’ve got a few chapters of Guesthouse that are relatively readable. Now I’m trying to work out how a character can trick Gwyn up Nupp. The problem with writing is I can easily put characters into problems but struggle with finding solutions to get them out of them.
