There has been a lot of large lay-offs in the IT-industry recently and I believe more will come. The market for individuals looking for jobs will get harder and more difficult. I'm currently looking for a job and I was almost scammed just like the guy explains in this video (in comment). The scammers is extremely elaborate, creating realistic looking social media accounts, with AI-generated content combined with real content. Their websites and descriptions is perfect, no flaws like the silly spam e-mails we're used to getting. They combine real profiles with fake content, tricking people who are getting more and more desperate for opportunities.
Spent last year building an amazing social network app, @nprofile…m0xe, that I'd love to turn into a SaaS for enterprise/business. Next version adds a feature rich AI chat with local and cloud inference. Though I can't do this alone anymore, so I'm looking for potential partners. If anyone is interested, reach out to me.

Remember Mixer? Microsoft attempted to buy Twitch, got a no, ended up buying Beam, renaming it to Mixer - throwing millions at big streamers to move over to their platform, only to shut it down with massive losses.
The bandwidth costs is the real issue for decentralized alternatives, though I think it can be done if we make some easy to setup software and have people open their firewalls and host it.
Nostria will do live streaming (stream from your phone) as soon as I have a provider for cheap TURN server.

Great app!
It's one of the reasons why I had to implement an image proxy for @nprofile…m0xe, many Nostr clients has not been good at image optimization before uploading. Biggest I'm following has an 17.16 MB, yet the thumbnail shown in Nostria for him is only 1.16 KB. Saves bandwidth, processing, memory and battery.

Ok thanks for sharing, I'll give it a go on an older Android phone I have. I noticed you have 13 relays, with the outbox model you really don't need more than 3-4. By having 13, everyone who likes or replies to you, is publishing events to all of those relays. It will be better for you and better for others if you reduce the amount of relays.

In one week from today, @nprofile…m0xe is one year old. I have almost 8000 contributions to GitHub, majority of those is on #Nostria.

Since 2020, I have made more than 1000 open-source contributions a year. I got into open-source in 2012. Last year was obviously boosted by the ability to use AI, which is incredible.
Though AI is not healthy to use. It's an addiction, you get a productivity boost that is just too much. I probably should be spending more time posting on social media as oppose to building Nostria, to get more adoption and exposure. Up late every night to add yet another feature, is not sustainable.
The rat-race is real, spending extremely late nights churning and building is not healthy in the long run. Especially when all of this effort goes towards value for others, with little value in return. I do appreciate and love every sats I've received, though much more has been given away than ever received. ❤️
Before Nostria, I built Ariton - Community Super App, months of hard effort that was dead when @nprofile…3r3l's Block shut down TBD.
I had to pivot, started building some small apps, then went back to my Blockcore Notes - a Nostr client I built way back in the day. Not maintained over the years, so decided to build a new one, and then Nostria was born.
I had a hope that people would be willing to pay for premium app and services, and maybe they are, but I'm delusional to think I can be successful by simply building something great without proper marketing resources.
No other Nostr client comes close to Nostria in rich features and capabilities, that doesn't help when nobody knows about it. There are so many minute details that you don't notice, which makes it delightful to use. People who start using it, love it, which in turn I love to please by getting feedback and improving. I'm so grateful for those who have been early adopters and given incredible feedback that has for most part been integrated into the app, and the services that Nostria provide.
Last two years I've worked exclusively on open-source, mostly by burning my own savings. First building Ariton, and now building Nostria.
Most of you might not know this, but I founded @nprofile…6hgp, a free city in Norway, together with my friend John. I'm also active in @nprofile…5v05, which is similar free city project in Montenegro. That is where my true passion lays, yet I have not been able to do as much as I really wanted to. My goal is that Nostria will be an important tool for all free cities, because these places is where something like Nostr and Nostria is truly needed. We're building new societies where government services must be replaced with voluntary solutions.

I took this photo today, such incredible beauty just around the corner, yet as the nerd I am, I don't get out enough. It's because I'm caught in this race to have success, to create something that matters more than the electricity cost of executing an AI model.
I don't think I can participate much more in this race against the machine.
My CV was impressive, my experience in the field of software engineering is very deep and broad, yet all of that is worth much less today. 28 years of professional experience, combined with years of computer skills, programming and graphics design before that as a young kid, reduce to the cost of electricity and accessible to anyone, anywhere, anytime.
I hope I have brought some true innovation to Nostr, there is a lot of true innovation within Nostria, many unique experiences to be had by those who dare to venture deep into it.

You never explained it to begin with, so you didn't do it again. Thanks for clarifying.
There will be plenty (spammers, stalkers, attackers, bots) who will send 21 sats for friend requests and the advertisements will be in the profile names and profile pictures. Also will be a lot of fakes, attempting to infiltrate friends lists. Many will succeed. Many will loose their private keys to scammers. Those people will "call the support center". Did you know that a large part of Facebooks ad revenue is from scammers?
Mitigating these things costs a lot of money.
Nobody is willing to pay the actual cost of the services they use. Everything is subsidized by VC money or ads.
Exactly what you want has already been attempted, "Lotus" it was called. The only difference was that you could set the cost of your inbox ourself, which would be better than a fixed 21 sats. The concept is that if you are attractive for some reason and people want your attention, they will pay more. You can also make it 1 million sats, but you "pay it forward" or "pay it back", depending on the scheme.
So your family already knows you, so they don't have a problem sending 1 million sats in a friend request to you, they know they will get it back.
This exact concept has already been done in traditional social media apps, I don't believe it had any long term success.

It's easy to make what you want, it won't be Nostr-native, but it will use Nostr identities (keys) for accounts.
Spam-attacks (friends requests) can still happen, but can rely on Web of Trust to filter out, giving a similar experience as Facebook/X.
For what purpose though? Why not use Facebook instead? Building this, won't be decentralized in architecture, as you "can't" have decentralized and private at the same time.
Could build it on Nostria, but I doubt there are any market for this (people willing to pay or revenue through advertisement with few users is worth little) and I would just be providing yet another service for free.
What are your thoughts on the financial nature of such a social network?

Nostr became popular because of "dumb" relays, Nostr using centralized gate-keeping relays defeats the original ethos of Nostr, and just makes it a very bad protocol (due to all its issues) to use for such purposes.
I fully understand the desire to have a Facebook-style locked down experience, the way to do that is not through filtering on who is allowed into a relay, but what a client decides to load.
Nostria does client-side filtering for threads, there is no problem doing a filtered query that relies on your following, or following lists - which will give you partially what you're after, though doesn't stop anyone from seeing the posts and photos. I could implement a following list with a known "d" tag which is your approved Friends list - which you populate only from friend request DMs. I built a social network on decentralized web nodes (Web5) a couple of years ago and that relied on an incoming friend request event. I might just implement this in Nostria when I think of it.
Nostr is not a privacy protocol, some people believe that. It's an extremely leaky protocol and there is nothing anyone can do about that. It's a decentralized and distributed protocol.
X became popular because it reduced the jumps from you to anyone in the world, to 1. You could engage directly with anyone without needing to be "accepted" first. You could get response from people who you found interesting, people who you normally would never be able to get access to. I wrote a lot about this in a blog years ago. It is the primary difference between X and Facebook.
This is also why Nostr became popular, developers could build code that published events without anyone needing to accept them first. Nostr would never be where it is today, without this.
NIP-42 (Auth) came almost a year after the protocol was first announced by @nprofile…cy6q. NIP-70 (Protected Events) just two years ago. NIP-70 is just a tiny little hack to reduce spreading events to the major relays, it doesn't add any real privacy or protection. Anyone with access to that relay can in a few minutes publish everything to the public. As as you mention, it's not really possible to do private on Nostr and if people want that, they should use something else. Implementing a new protocol based upon Nostr identities for this purpose, can be a very good idea and is fully possible to do.
This can be solved on the client and that's the only place it should be solved. Attempting to solve this on relays is going down the wrong path, it's attempting to use bad tools to achieve a goal.
Pure spam is a different topic and relays need to fight that, and it's a hard challenge. The person responsible for fighting spam on X has basically capitulated few days ago and said from now on we're all toast.
Just as you can't stop anyone from talking about you in their own home, you shouldn't think about stopping someone from commenting on your posts, instead the mindset should change towards not retreiving those events to begin with. You can ask the relay to not get what others are saying about you, or to you. It's like avoiding going into your neighbor's house if you don't want to hear what they have to say about you. You can choose to not go there, but you can't stop them from talking about you in their own home (I don't consider each home to be a relay, but a relay is the neighbourhood or the world, we share the space, just as we share the space on a relay).
Private group chats is the only way to do private on Nostr (until Marmot Protocol becomes more widely available and used). If people want to share photos of their family and kids, they can do that in a private group chat.
What people post, they should consider public. The legal system (not that anyone should care about that) in many countries even considers private groups as public, talking bad about someone in a private Facebook group, can get you in legal trouble as it's considered public. These centralized apps reduced the consquences, at least before, to tedious data gathering done by humans (screenshots, copy-paste), on Nostr it's super fast due to the protocol to gather all the data. With AI tools, this data gathering from "private" groups is going to be even easier.
Implementing a "Friends only" mode is a good idea (as long as it's not considered a "private mode"), the protocol does support it, but it requires to reason about the protocol in the right way, as I have explained above. Though of course, it does not stop anyone from seeing your posts (and media).

I have verified with @nprofile…pt5w that Amethyst only lists actual media event and that's great.
Primal still lists all media that users have ever uploaded, even if they uploaded anything by mistake and never went back and deleted it.

Nostria has a good media library where you can manage it, including delete.
I really hope all clients stops using the listing APIs on media servers, even if it's enabled on the server. The default setting for the software should be off.

@nprofile…dmep supports a "friends only" filter for threads, it's "self-enforcing" obviously, but it does restrict participation in threads to those the original poster is following. The idea here is that this might end up in a NIP where the event might have a tag indicating that this behavior should be applied or not, and then enforced by clients.
It effectively removes all spam, but also shows replies in the social network of the person you are looking at. Maybe it shouldn't disable interactions though, but this is an alternative to "Your Following", because "Your Following" is a different social graph than someone elses, and you don't want to filter out valuable interactions in threads by applying "Your Following" to someone else.

@nprofile…dmep does both, I removed the Proof of Work filter long time ago, since there was so few notes published with it anyway - and the relays don't support prefix id filtering to get only events with PoW. Now there are more clients that does PoW though, so I might re-introduce this filter for threads.

All it takes is a reply or repost by someone, then their post and profile is shown, even with people list or trust filter enabled.
In @nprofile…m0xe when you apply either of these filters in a thread, it will show the parents, making them visible even without any Web of Trust scoring.
I don't think it takes much engagement to get visibility for new accounts.

Have you tried @nprofile…m0xe? Could you check if it works as you expect? If not, I'll get it fixed right away.
Also which clients are you referring too? Primal and Yakihonne is doing some custom indexing and rendering, so they might show older articles I think, but not 100% sure. I know at least they render expired events.

I'll get that added, you can verify publish status in System Notifications. Nostria will attempt automatic retries if it fails. You can manually trigger retries from there.

I don't fully understand your request here, is this what you want:
- A notification feed for all events (like kind 1 posts) where you are mentioned?
Or is it something else? The Messages feature (NIP-04/NIP-17) doesn't make sense to only show incoming?
There is also public chats and private group chats (NIP-17).

I found the issue, the events from that bridge is marked "Protected Event (NIP-70) and Nostria didn't allow repost/quote of those. This is more of a relay NIP than client, it has been fixed now and deployed.
Sorry for late fix, I had some other improvements to finish first.
I also noticed that one of your comments in this thread renders as JSON, I'll get that fixed too tomorrow.

Voice events should have voice replies, the reason you can reply with text here is because Derek embedded the voice event into a regular post.
The NIP doesn't say that text replies is "illegal", but it also doesn't specify that it should be supported either.

These frameworks are very problematic, relying on some "automatic magic" to move state from backend to frontend has never resulted in good result and has been redone many times in history.
"Oh you can just write one file and it will sometimes run in client and sometimes be able to query database"...

That's strange, got a link to event that doesn't work? It's probably one or more specific events.
I just reposted @nprofile…9qmh without a problem, the same repost and quote buttons work fine for Blusky (using @nprofile…6gd2) and Threads (using @nprofile…plk0) as well.
Though I think there is an ability to send replies back to those networks, right? I would love to add support for that as well.

I made a Gifs selector that relies on emoji sets, just needs to add "gifs" tag to it and it will be listed in @nprofile…m0xe. It doesn't need be hosted on media servers, but I added that option to quickly take the gifs off centralized mass-surveillance services.
This is the native Nostr way of doing gifs, everyone can create these and we collaborate together building awesome memes and gifs that everyone can use.
Try searching for "retard" using Primal and you'll see why it's bad to rely on these gifs services, which is tracking everyone globally and selling all our data.

I don't think so, WASM Modules is isolated, they can't access DOM and local resources, it's memory isolated and "secure by design". Run it in a Web Worker, and it's even more isolated. Mining Monero wouldn't work well either, since it has no network access.

No reason to activate WoT if you don't have any followers. It's for people who interact with others and it doesn't take much to get higher than 0 rating, which is really all you need. Anyone who posts good content will get followers.

Can we please turn off public listing on media servers and stop using that API for "Media" on profiles? It was a very bad idea to begin with and very bad that Nostr clients is still doing this. Nobody should be able to list other peoples list of media. Turn it off on your media servers and show picture/video events on Media tabs.
Whenever someone Shares a photo or video in a private message, some apps will show these to everyone on the network. Nostria have kept this private since beginning.

I grew up with Macintosh and loved it, PCs was so far behind back then. Then I went for a MacBook Pro a few years ago (I also used Mac a few times after MacOS 9), but the OS is just not good at all for power users - and there is so much "muscle memory" that fails using the Mac keyboards.

The chat doesn't have any relays defined, you can edit the chat using Nostria and set relays. This is important or else users won't have any specific place to send the chat events and just send to their account relays. You can set them same as your account relays, which is the default suggestion when you edit.

One feedback, please edit the chat and use your media server to host the channel image, because many networks (including my ISP) doesn't allow IPFS gateways to be accessible.
You can easily setup your media servers in Nostria and directly from the editing of a channel, you can upload the image you want.
