@nprofile…28x8 Afrofuturism is created by American descendants of Africans shipped to the Americas. It's a response to their need of identity and their own future, but it at best romanticizes what futures are dreamt of in actual Africa, where people don't get a voice to claim them.
African Futurism are voices from a myriad cultures of modern Africa, rooted in their own contexts, histories, values and mythologies, distinct from each other and the American homogenization.

@nprofile…28x8 you mean górale, the most patriarchal cultural group in Poland who refused to accept the anti-domestic violence law saying it destroys their culture?
I did study some of their history, how they opposed a lot of oppressive states, but I don't think they share as much of the liberatory spirit as the Ukrainian Cossacks did.
I'm afraid that there is just no indigenous group in our region who can teach us sustainability, especially given that we lack a word for it.

@nprofile…28x8 I live in Poland. We do not have a tradition of sustainable land stewardship. We don't have indigenous people who would teach us how to coexist with ecosystems.
We don't even have a concept of sustainability in Polish. Its only balance or balanced growth.
We need a new language to imagine doing that, in our way.

@nprofile…28x8 I wrote about it in my own essay: the rage expressed in militancy is too easy to control by whichever big system people rage against. They became safe, predictable rebels.
I want to tell stories of re-forging this white-hot rage into determination to build an alternative. Instead of throwing molotovs, imagine creating systems which help people even if the state or infrastructure fails.

@nprofile…28x8 not every region of the world has indigenous cultures that offer their own land stewardship and visions of social justice.
In some places, for some topics, we need a new language.
Going deeper, I think it would be good to differentiate between "afrofuturism" (visions created by black Americans) and "african futurism" which more closely aligns with visions and tradition of people who live in Africa.
The differences between the two can be quite stark.

I've been waiting for this essay from @nprofile…28x8 - a criticism of #solarpunk as understood from the American / Internet / Punk perspective.
I'm personally not that attached to the label or the "mainstream" parts of the movement.
My own goal is to find a language, a narrative and a set of symbols/hieroglyphs to tell the stories necessary for our survival. Stories happening right now.
That's why I started the #storySeedLibrary .
Maybe Solarpunk isn't_the thing, but I can't see any better one.

@nprofile…auv0 I'm afraid I don't have an answer to that. If someone wants to alter your art without a clear permission, the only recourse is to (threaten to) sue them. That can possibly run into the Streisand effect.
The burden of proving that this actually broke the terms of the ethical license is on you, the creator.
Might work against a small company, but I personally can't see that as a fight worth fighting.

Then let's craft symbols which do not make sense in a cottagecore gardening world! Let's imagine hard struggles and hope in the face of adversity, not just nice cottages.
If a cottagecore person starts sharing symbols of a community overcoming a disaster by working together, my goal is already achieved! :D

Alternatively, instead of going #solarpunk utopian -> hard won, we can go dystopian -> utopian.
An illustration of a disaster site with clear damage, homes, infrastructure, livelihoods lost.
The more details you see however, the more you realize: it's a postcard of people helping each other, where everyone is accounted for and cared for.
We go from the shock of destruction into a power of community.

Part of me wonders if the artistic device of "the more you stare, the more unsettling it gets" of Jeff Lee Johnson's #art might work well for #solarpunk . Hear me out:
1. A utopian Solarpunk (yoghurt) postcard like hundreds you've seen, but the details show the history of the disasters, scars on the community and the infrastructure, slowly healed. It's a hard-won, lived-in future with real people in it, not just a marketing ad.

The discourse around the #wikipedia taking #AI money reminds me of https://beforewegoblog.com/purity-and-futures-of-hard-work-by-ada-palmer/ and the discourse around #purity .
I'm not interested in the aesthetics of #solarpunk , but how to make most with the limited tools we have.
If the Wikipedia is getting scraped by the bots - losing money, potentially limiting access to its resources - or allows the AI companies in and GAINS money to share more free, human-created knowledge, I'll take the latter.

Summing it up:
I consider the Literary Genre of #solarpunk to be a catalyst bringing people into the Movement and helping them find each other.
The visual language can be a tool strengthening the Genre and expanding its reach, but the Aesthetics on its own is counter-productive as it's too easy to co-opt and use against the values of the movement.
The Movement is what I consider the most worthwhile, as both the genre and the aesthetics don't stand for anything without it.

It's what I'm the most skeptical about. Aesthetics - much broader than a visual language I am focusing on - are too hazy, too easy to co-opt not only by capitalism, but any other philosophy.
I've seen people vibing with #solarpunk aesthetics while promoting AI, Blockchains, NFTs, and even Swiss banks.
I don't recall meeting anyone I consider a member of the Movement who came to it through the A.

I wrote an essay about it, https://lenses.alxd.org/ and I think: we're not ready for that yet.
G: We don't have the tools, the tropes, the symbols. We're working in that direction, but we lack a Masterpiece which would tell a story in a world in which a change was not only possible, but describable.
There's no other way towards it but charting these paths, trying again and again, building on each other's work.

If we're talking about "a pipeline", most people I've met between the three have already shared #solarpunk values and were working around the movement, but couldn't find a good language to explain their ideals and goals. The stories and the aesthetics helped with that, a catalyst for forming more intentional, focused group believing in a picture bigger than just the immediate work.
Given the Movement (M), the Aesthetics (A) and Genre (G) work great.

A lot of #solarpunk visions might seem sterile because they show a #utopia already realized, but with no trace of the struggle, no cultural shifts arising from the period of change.
If I was to imagine a stabilized, sustainable Solarpunk world it would seem very alien and unintuitive to us.
It's because it's not a technological change that's needed - but a cultural one.
Things we already can do but can't perceive or describe them as viable.

Less climate focused, VERY societal.
