When I was a teenager in the '90s, my boyfriend at the time gave me his old skateboard.
The trucks and wheels were fine, but the deck was heavily used and the design had been scraped off most of the bottom, so I took some paint markers and decorated it by painting a black and white checkerboard background with a large stormtrooper head in the foreground because Star Wars and ska were two of my favorite things at the time.
I was mostly just a poser and barely rode it and it remained in the back of my car for several years until I was at a sporting goods store and saw a kid doing tricks on a demo deck and I told him he was really good and he said "Thanks! I have to practice here because I don’t have a skateboard."
At that moment, I remembered my backseat skateboard and told him he could have it, but warned him that the "graphic" was kind of nerdy so he was more than welcome to draw/paint over it.
I went out to my car and grabbed the skateboard and brought it to the front of the store where the kid was waiting and he flipped it over and said "Whoa! Star Wars and ska?!? These are two of my favorite things!"
I’m so glad that skateboard finally found the right owner.

I went to a poolside bar at a nearby hotel and ordered a drink and then headed to the restroom.
When I got to the restroom door, I realized I needed a room key to enter, so I started to turn back, but then I immediately saw the bartender who had just taken my order so I asked how I could get into the restroom and he said:

and I was like:

Oh! Good timing! I just ordered one and have now spent over $40 combined on nail clippers 😂
But I honestly don't have any regrets. As long as the toenail clippers work even remotely as well as the regular nail clippers, it will be worth it.
And now I too am sad that I couldn't say Mastodon (you) told me about the toenail clippers, so I instead said they were recommended by a friend, which is just as honest, in my opinion.

Back in the early 2000s, I was really into this Nintendo game called Animal Crossing where you'd go running around a little town planting trees and fishing and running errands for the little animals that live in the town and the goal was to make money so you could build and grow your home.

My company used to be a scrappy San Francisco tech startup but we were acquired by a large corporation so we had to switch from being Google people to Microsoft people and I'm in the process of creating a training deck in PowerPoint and I am seriously losing my mind with how Microsoft keeps messing up my formatting and how every little thing seems to take 5–10 times as many steps.
For example, I'll try to figure out how to do something that would have taken one click in Google slides and I'll figure it out, but it's like a seventeen step process in PowerPoint, so, when I’m done, I'll ask my husband who has been tortured by Microsoft for much longer if there's an easier way to do that thing and he'll inevitably be like "the way you did it IS the easy way to do it in PowerPoint/Word/whatever."
It's seriously like they clunked together some code and were like "well, it's at least kind of sort of better than a word processor?" and never bothered to improve anything.

Boosting this because Christmas always makes me think of my mom, but whenever this post goes around, I inevitably get people who are upset saying "not everyone had a good mom so don’t tell me what to do!"
I get it. I do.

I had a very old account with E*Trade and I wanted to close the account so I'd stop getting dumb emails about my $0 account, but I had no idea what my password was, so I clicked to reset the password and E*Trade said they'd send a verification code to my phone number, except the number on file was a number I haven't had in over 10 years, so I clicked on "I don't have access to this device" and E*Trade was seriously like:

In only vaguely related news, if anyone needs a free photo to use for a website or book cover or really anything else, they can download whatever they want from my Pixelfed account ( @npub1xua…s88j).
I only ask that they send me a photo showing how they used it because it would make me happy to know it was actually getting used.

WARNING: Long story with no real point. Just remembering something and wanted to write it down to document it.
Years ago, I worked at an Apple Store teaching computer lessons for all learning levels and on a variety of topics.
One of my regulars was a nice older lady who was a piano teacher and we got to talking and she mentioned that her husband is a lawyer and he's the one who wanted to learn to use the computer, but he didn't want to go into the store to learn, so she was taking lessons for him and then she would go home and try to teach him, but it wasn't working out because they were getting "frustrated" with one another, so she asked if I ever taught private lessons at people's homes.
This was definitely a conflict of interest and I really liked my job and wasn't willing to risk losing it, but she mentioned that it may be okay if we were just trading services where I would teach her husband to use the computer and she would teach me piano lessons as a thank you.
I ran it by my manager and she said she was totally fine with an arrangement like that and she gave me the green light.
Once a week after work, I'd take the bus to their house in a suburb of Chicago and we'd start with my piano lesson and then I'd go and give the husband his computer lesson.
Her husband wanted to learn the computer because "so many law things require computers nowadays" so he wanted to "keep up with the kids" and I really admired that about him.
Over time, I gave up on the piano, but he still wanted to learn more on the computer, so I just continued teaching the lessons for free.
Once he had "mastered" email and web searches, he mentioned that he wanted to create a website for his law practice, so I helped him make a basic website (e.g., bio, services, contact info, etc.).
The template he selected had a large space at the top for a header photo and he said he wanted a photo of the Chicago skyline, so we hopped on Google and selected one and added it and clicked publish and he was really happy with his website and we sent an email to pretty much everyone he knew (BCCed) to link them to his new website.
At that point, he had accomplished his ultimate goal and I just happened to be moving, so we said our goodbyes and that was the last time I saw him.
Years later, I took a Photoshop class and part of the class was on copyright laws and attribution and I had this OH NO flashback moment to creating that website because we definitely just did a random google search for Chicago skyline and didn't have formal permission to use that photo and I had NO idea what the photographer's permissions were, so I was terrified that I was going to get this poor lawyer in trouble for copyright infringement due to a dumb photo that we hastily dropped on his website years before.
By this point, I lived in a different state and all of the website files lived on his computer and there was no way I was going to be able to instruct him on how to change the photo via email or over the phone, so I wasn't going to open a can of worms by even mentioning it to him and I just pushed down the bad feelings and guilt, but every so often I'd remember it and they'd come flooding back.
Whenever this would happen, I'd pull up his website to see if anything changed, but it was always there with that big photo of the Chicago skyline staring right back at me.
I recently remembered him again and went to pull up his website to see if the photo was still there, but this time the entire website was gone.
I was relieved until I googled him and found his obituary instead and my relief turned to grief. It turns out he had died a couple of years ago and left behind his loving wife, a piano teacher.
RIP, Don. You were one of the good ones and i'm grateful to have known you and I'm glad you lived a long life free of copyright lawsuits.

Gunther's makes really good ice cream and the building is OG mid-century and super cute. I’m okay with getting that dumb song stuck in my head in exchange for a nice little Gunther's experience. Especially on a hot day.

Kev mentioned that our oil change was scheduled for January 8th and I was like "Oh, on Elvis' birthday" and he was like "Why do you know his birthday? You don’t even like Elvis."
He is correct because I am very indifferent to Elvis and I seriously have no idea why I know his dumb birthday when I have to write all of my friends' and family member's birthdays on a physical paper calendar old lady style.
My mind is full of useless BS like this and I think it's clogging the space I should be using for important things, like singing the periodic table backwards since I currently can only sing it forward.
