This is very different.
Exiting from there Second World War was a sense of brotherhood and unity, from joint sacrifice for a common cause.
Your representative and leader sees anything and everything as something for extraction and his personal wealth. I'm sorry, Chris, but I take the dude at his word. He wants my country as his fiefdom and as the 51st state.
I will be blunt: I would sooner die than let that come to pass.

These are the personal choices that I'll be making in the days ahead. Hopefully, my friends south of the border will see reason, because this is a singularly awful way for friends to treat each other.

Removing these will be hard. Choosing not to read my local newspaper is going to be very hard (I really enjoy political news coverage). Making sure to purchase local is difficult, and for technology nigh impossible.
But, I've already cut American booze from the weekly purchase (goodbye bourbon). I've ended my Netflix subscription. I'm going line by line in my monthly budget, and eliminating these costs.

To emphasize the above interconnection: I'm well aware that every single newspaper in my city (specifically the Calgary Herald and the Calgary Sun) are owned by Americans. And that my local grocer is owned by Americans. And that my device in my hands that I am typing on, while built abroad, is owned by Americans.

The United States is now an existential threat to my home. And now it has to be treated as such. Changing paths on years of trust and relationships will be hard, because of the immense trust that was built up, joint faith created and an immeasurable amount of cross-connections legion.

But the stated policy of the United States is to grind my country into dust and force its annexation, making it forever a colony to Washington. It would be an erasure of hundreds of years of history, a destruction of a friendship just as lengthy and the very elimination of the culture that I have been brought up in. It's also warring against my firm belief in a Canada that builds with others: and that this approach is foundationally being rejected.

With my American friends actively pressuring my country and demanding its surrender, I am thoroughly aggrieved. And I meant to use the word 'friend,' and want to emphasize it. I have colleagues, university friends and folks I've known for years across the border.

I volunteer with them because I care about Canada. And that, if we don't talk about our shared problems, joint interests and meet solutions-minded Canadians... we won't have that exceptional world that we can build together.
And now we have a very thorny, very troubling problem on our hands.
