There seems to be genuine confusion about how open source works. In particular some people believe that Bitcoin Core developers have a fiduciary duty, either towards them personally or towards some general notion of the Bitcoin network. They are surprised that I and some others respond to this rather aggressively.
Remember that this is the argument Craig Wright tried to make. He failed, but not after millions of dollars were burnt on defending these developers. And not after several quit because of the stress. Don't go down this path.
To put it as a catchy phrase: open source means you can do whatever you want with the code, not with the people who write it.
Open source lets you fork code, and modify it to your liking. That's pretty much what I do every day, which isn't to say that I don't also try to make sure other people like it. I get paid in Bitcoin and OpenSats keeps their whole treasury in it, so the idea that I want destroy potential future income is rather retarded.
Part of CSW's demands was that Bitcoin Core wrote specific (confiscation) code for him. Eventually he just hired people to write it for him, as one should, but somehow that still wasn't enough for him. I get a very similar vibe from people who run Knots but yet don't find that enough. Should we worry about a new round of lawsuits?

Moderation guidelines are not in the Bitcoin Core codebase itself. That would make no sense, since any fork could and should have its own policy.
There's ongoing effort to move bitcoin/bitcoin to bitcoin-core/bitcoin to reduce that confusion.

This would be a "nice" use case for what Greg Maxwell suggested today on the mailing list (and earlier on Reddit), to separate relay policy from mining policy - where the latter can be more strict:

To be clear, this won't permanently censor these transactions either, but because not everyone is going to be sufficiently intimidated. But it will delay them more than in the scenario where those miners only exclude things from their own blocks. And definitely delay them more than can be achieved with just policy, even if 90% of nodes used these filters.

Interesting idea, could stimulate people to use Stratum v2 / DATUM without having to run a fork of Bitcoin Core:

Which means you've now gone from one deposit that doesn't stand out much on chain, to a very obvious pattern of receiving sats from the exchange and sending them back, all using the same address. Plus your bank sees a small transaction going to an exchange and a large one coming back, which might trigger their alarm and they hold you fiat ransom too.

As the saying goes: markets can stay irrational longer than you can stay liquid. Most people will probably just use other means to move value if Bitcoin becomes unusable for a few decades.

I think you're talking about how they work in the court system. Unfortunately much of the world is run by the kangaroo courts of Google, Apple, Microsoft and Amazon which have very different rules.
E.g. on the topic copyright, having obviously written a book yourself is not enough evidence to get it listed. Once their black box system flags something, you're fucked unless you take them to court or unless you can give them the piece of paper they want.

The M4 MacBook Pro is not the fastest machine I have, but it's the only one that can sync the blockchain in a few* hours hours without loud fans.
Syncing from the assume utxo snapshot at height 840,000 to the tip took only half an hour. Looking forward to that process becoming more user friendly over time, because it really improves the onboarding experience of a full node. It took me longer to download the torrent from my own slow seed :-)

I agree there can be all sorts of reasons for the attack, but I was responding to the claim / suggestion that it was a deliberate attack on the UN by Israel. That's not a reasonable default assumption. Bad intel or some other misunderstanding is a good default assumption, until evidence shows up to suggest otherwise.
As for IDF investigations: the Dutch air-force accidentally killed 70 civilians in Iraq in 2015. It took almost a decade for that to come out. And because of a whistleblower. It was hidden from Parliament too. Militaries around the world are not known for transparency. So we may indeed never know. But stuff leaks, and whisleblowes are out there.

Press coverage of this war between Israel and various Iran proxies is extremely high, e.g. compared to Saudi Arabia vs. Jemen (also Iran). The fact that a bunch of mortars fired at a UN compound even makes the news is absurd. These things happen in all wars (though usually there's no UN or journalist around to get shot in the first place).
Nobody is complaining that Mexican drug cartels don't allow enough journalists on the battlefield. Of course it's fair to hold a democratic county to the highest possible standard.
I'm sure there's both good and malicious reasons why journalists are not given free
and safe access to this war zone. From the other side I'm skeptical that Hamas and Hezbollah will protect every journalist no matter how critical their reporting.
This creates an asymmetry where anytime Israel allows a journalist in, they will only report on bad things done by Israel because otherwise they're killed. Or they get killed by accident by the IDF. There's no upside. But denying them access also looks bad, and isn't how democracies should behave. Embedded journalists in the IDF would be safe and might reveal bad behavior from the other side, but it would be seen as propaganda. Which it is, but so is Al Jazeera coverage. There's no winning strategy here.
And then of course Netanyahu and/or his zealot buddies will find a way to make things even worse. And because this is the middle east, it's always even more complicated.
From a news consumer point of view the best thing is to probably just wait.

Alright, this personal Fediverse bridge with a patched* @npub1d03…pzfs is promising. But I'll need to debug and improve it more.
1. It seems Mostr stops listening to my relay, or fails to listen at all at startup.
2. Replies from Nostr to Mastodon doesn't seem to work unless you @ the person explicitly, but see *
3. I have to whitelist on my relay every account on Mastodon that I want to follow
4. If someone else on Nostr jumps into a thread it's a mess. They'll only get relayed accross the bridge if either I whitelist them, or I engage them - because then my own client will broadcast it to the relay. But if they then use Mostr proper they'll look like two different people on the mastodon side.
My goal is mainly to get it good enough so I can occasionally reply to people on fediverse instances that block the main mostr bridge.

The problem with these income adjusted fines is privacy. Finland has a central database with everyone's income that cops can apparently just access. It's effectively a kidnap shortlist. Though to be fair, these guys were already flaunting wealth so for them the additional risk is marginal. But everyone is in that database.

I find the article a bit alarmist and pedantic. I don't think it would convince anyone outside our filter bubble, and might even backfire.
Most BBC readers wouldn't understand the distinction between transaction and payment. Using FOIA seems complete overkill.
I don't know why Forbes took it down, that's bad journalistic practice: they can put a notice at the top if they feel there's a serious issue with it. I very much doubt there's anything to it, e.g. I don't think the BBC threatened to sue them. But who knows.
That said, De Vries articles do need debunking, but that should focus on the bigger picture. E.g
1. the fact that it's utterly ridiculous to use water consumption as a metric without any consideration of the local context. Is the miner draining an aquifer that millions of people depend on for drinking water? Or using a giant river?
2. the fact that both "per transaction" and "per payment" are dubious metrics when applied to mining. The energy and water are used to secure the network, that includes but also value at rest.
The water use per transaction can be reduced to a single molecule by a bunch of lightning nodes running on AWS making trillions of transactions in a circle.

Though I suppose for now, since the site _only_ shows a README file, I should probably use something like gitea / forgejo / gitlab anyway. And then only use Git Workshop for issue and PR flow.

So for now I use @npub18m7…q955 for most things, noStrudel "next" mobile web for self-sovereign photo uploads, noStrudel regular on desktop browser to write long form stuff and read longer threads, and Fountain for podcast stuff.
On the one hand: what a mess.
On the other hand: I don't have to beg Elon or any specific single app to fix all the things. Because identity is portable.

Finally some optimistic news!
The Netherlands also uses paper ballots and hand written tallies that are published online (in hours to days). Last fall I downloaded and timestamped them all (inspired by Guatemala). Will do the same for the upcoming EU election (for Dutch votes).
Probably won't have time to organize a gamefied recount, but there's no rush: once the anchor of truth is deployed you can take your time. #note1ynq…82ty
