#AskFedi — Looking for a platform recommendation!
I help lead a small nonprofit supporting #neurodivergent #students and #parents. We are 100% volunteer, and we produce a few different series of events throughout the year.
We need better ways to communicate with (paid) members and (unpaid) “friends”.
What platform/tools could I use to, for example, let someone RSVP or express interest in an event series, check the box to get auto reminders and text notifications re: all events in that series. For example: “event is tomorrow at 9am. See you there!” or “it’s raining! We’re meeting at x instead.”
Ideally this platform could also do email. One-off campaigns/blasts with simple segmentation (members and/or friends) and maybe some automations (like a welcome flow for new members).
We can pay a reasonable amount; doesn’t have to be FOSS/self-hosted/linux/etc. 😜
(I’ve asked a similar question here before, but I think we have made progress clarifying our specific needs.)

Local #MeshCore #LoRa #mesh is growing quickly. A few months ago, there were only a couple repeater nodes in #Marin; I could see them on the map, but we couldn’t communicate.
Now there are ~20 repeaters (that I can see) across Marin, including some on #MountTamalpais, which is amazing for reach.
And this morning I had my first ever REPLY to one of my outgoing test messages — from someone in San Jose! It’s actually working! 😁🤓💪
(Side note: one thing I like about MeshCore is it has channels, including #test. So you can send as many silly test messages to #test as you want — that’s what it’s for — without cluttering the main public channel. When I tried #Meshtastic, the one public channel was 99% “does anyone see this?”)

I can’t relate to appearing calm during a crisis 😅 but I can relate to feeling depleted afterward.
We had a meeting today with a new resource that could get us respite care. They said “we feel that respite care is really important because you are the care providers, and if you’re not 100%, then the care you’re giving won’t be 100%.” 😮😭
I’ve never had anyone talk to us this way, and value our (unacknowledged, 24/7) work this way. ❤️
Anyway, I am sure that your work is not going unnoticed — even if you appear calm. 😁

We thought that was the end of it, but… on a walk the next day, we noticed a familiar huge pile of wood chips and stumps two blocks uphill in front of our neighbor’s house. 🤔🤔🤔
Hey guys where’d you get those wood chips?
Our neighbors explained they just learned about this thing called chipdrop and you get all these wood chips for free isn’t it amazing
🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️
The shady arborist had waited for another nearby chipdrop request to come in, so he could have his guys pick up all the stumps from our house and just dump it in front of another neighbor’s house!! It probably took them the better part of the day, too. I guess the boss decided all that labor and dishonesty was cheaper than disposing of the stumps properly.
I don’t remember what happened after that. I think once it wasn’t my direct problem anymore, I blocked the whole thing out. 😅 I never thought of it again until now, hearing about your rocks. 😁

We eventually had to escalate to the police, because basically it was then a case of illegal dumping. The officer, despite being used to Portland, was quite amused. “OK explain this chipdrop thing to me again?” Once she understood what happened, she left and apparently made some threatening calls. The arborist’s crew picked up the stumps a few days later. Whew! Problem solved, only now we still needed wood chips and no longer trusted the chipdrop system. Sigh

Anyway one time we requested a chipdrop, and the arborist comes by when we’re not home and dumps a lot of wood chips on the street in front of our house. Yay! It’s massive, more than we needed. Like 6x12 feet and piled 5 feet high. Exciting for these gardeners, but then we start moving it one wheelbarrow at a time and find it is mostly STUMPS covered with a light dusting of wood chips. (!!!)
The stumps were each, I don’t know, 50-60 pounds? They were too heavy and awkward for me to lift, anyway.
We called chipdrop who called the arborists. Hey you gotta pick up these stumps! No response. See it would be a LOT of extra work for their guys to PICK UP all the huge stumps they had just dumped off the truck. And they’ve moved on to more productive, easier jobs.

OMG!! What a story!
Happy to hear they returned the rocks (unexpected). But… does that mean you have to lift them up yet AGAIN to dig out the plastic (and more rocks) underneath? (Sigh)
This reminds me of a less dramatic home-ownership-type story about wood chips. (Feel free to tune me out at this point.)
We were living in Portland, OR, where there is a great service called chipdrop. It matches arborists (who want to get rid of their wood chips after a job) with homeowners (who want chips for mulch, landscaping). It’s $0 cost, a win-win… when it works. (It usually works!)

The Steep Ravine trail is on the side of Mount Tamalpais in Marin County, just north of San Francisco. It’s stunningly beautiful, very near Muir Woods, with coast redwoods and ferns growing alongside Webb Creek.
As you’d guess from the name, some parts of the trail are quite steep. One section is so steep, there is a ladder you must climb up (or down) to get across an otherwise impassable portion.
On CoMaps, I love how this feature is labeled “The Ladder”, as opposed to just “ladder” generically, because anyone who has done this trail know there is one ladder, and it is The Ladder, for sure! This is such a small detail, but I like how the map reflects how locals refer to this feature.

When you get into the weeds it’s really amazing to see how much has been invested in identifying location even faster than waiting for gps satellite signals… I knew about locating via identified WiFi networks but not Bluetooth beacons. Wild!

I was surprised to learn a third-party API is used to determine device location. But I’ve used CoMaps in remote areas without a network — I assume it uses on-device GPS (or whatever OS API) to determine location then, right?
What does the Google Fused Location API offer that on-device doesn’t?

Many new accounts requesting to follow me lately where the account purports to be from Gaza, a mother or father who needs help… They are so far all written with a similar voice and photos (a bit overly professional-looking headshots, if you ask me).
Absolutely there is a true nightmare on the ground and real people need help but… Gazans turning to Mastodon for help? And requesting to follow me?
Are these real people or what?
I am skeptical and also very cautious to not undermine any real support efforts. 🤔😔

(Although… when I politely asked our Bay Area Mesh(tastic) group if anyone was tinkering with meshcore I was shut down pretty quickly, like “we don’t do that here”. I suspect some folks will be more open to alternative approaches and tools, and some people will be attached to what they already know — even though it’s also super new… 🤷‍♂️)
If I’ve learned anything the past couple of years it is to never get too attached to any one particular tool, platform, or technology… 😅

Thanks for sharing! I suspect that community involvement — ie people actually meeting IRL and working together to thoughtfully plan and site nodes — is important. There are few nodes near me; I am grateful you shared that trace route screenshot as I’ve never even had a successful TR and didn’t know what it could look like! 😅 And @npub1yyr…lyn2’s thread is what introduced me to meshcore, so I am excited about the possibilities there as well. Glad you chimed in!

PS Since you mentioned not having a device yet… I’ve learned not to trust the maps showing active nodes. They are historical records of what nodes self report. But stuff goes up and down CONSTANTLY. There are always way more and also far fewer active nodes than the maps report (if that makes sense).
I guess that’s the appeal of a mesh — in theory the network is self healing even as stuff goes up and down, but in my short experience so far, it mostly is just “down”. That’s why MeshCore’s theoretically more explicit acknowledgments of receipt are appealing to me — they could restore some faith in a system that I only just started exploring and it already feels broken. (Not to be overly dramatic about it!)

My understanding agreed with your understanding here. :)
There are more Meshtastic nodes near me than MeshCore for sure (though still not enough to actually contact anyone.)
I am not a network or radio pro but something about the MeshCore approach is more appealing to me. Maybe it’s just more familiar — to have a repeater be a repeater and a client be a client. That’s closer to the server/client conceptual model I already get. :)
Also so far my Meshtastic attempts result in no one in the public channel ever responding so I’m left with confusion: did it work? Did anyone see me? Do they just not like me? 🤷‍♂️

PS Not sure if you have waded into the #meshtastic vs #meshcore debate yet but the latter looks a more friendly to my liking, in the sense of giving more visibility into message routing and acknowledgements. Like, you can tell if anyone actually received your message and you can specify routes to be used.

We just got back from an inspiring workshop at Fibershed, where we learned about using invasive plants to make baskets! For example, this is Pampas Grass, an ornamental grass often used for landscaping, despite being an invasive species here in California. Harvesting non-native plants — and then creating beautiful and functional objects out of the material — helps rebalance local ecologies.

I’ve been using @npub18e2…3qve for a few days now. It’s impressively easy to set up. But… for my main use case (ad blocking), it’s not as consistent as AdGuard DNS. Many ads are getting through — even though NextDNS claims to use AdGuard DNS’s own block list. (It’s an option; I have it enabled.)
Anyway now I’m confused why the service that should be blocking MORE is actually blocking LESS.

Thanks for the offer to help, @npub17gp…nrxn! So after reading your docs for a bit… it wasn’t immediately clear but I think I understand now that you actually use email infrastructure to exchange messages (right?). So if I set this up for my group, first everyone needs to set up a new email address just for use with Delta, right? And the easiest is to use your chat mail server.
I use Fastmail regularly. Would I need a separate Fastmail account (inbox) or just a designated new alias?

Hey what chat service would you recommend for use with a small nonprofit group of non-technical volunteers?
Think: alternative to WhatsApp or group texting, but just as easy to set up.

I hate to say it but in my experience the support chat bot “AI” is actually… pretty good? It sometimes gives me personalized answers based on my account/site settings, which is always surprising.
Also from what I can tell they are leaning in “AI” for Shopify the business — but it isn’t something that impacts my business or site directly. (So far any features can be turned off.)

It’s DARVO, a documented response pattern common to abusers of all stripes (especially narcissists):
- Deny
- Attack
- Reverse Victim and Offender
This pattern seems to apply to fascists overall, too! To me, it helps explain why some people are trapped in this cycle of abuse with the current GOP — the disinfo and victim blaming is disorienting and designed to control so the victim comes crawling back for more (and votes, too, I guess).

same here! Have been a paid Transmit user for… oh man more than 20 years? Used to use Panic’s Coda, which was amazing at the time. Excited to try Nova.

😬 No government-run SMS alert systems? Having just moved back to California (been away for ten years), I’ve been surprised to find we have the opposite problem: *several* different emergency alert systems, mostly opt-in, run by different agencies and deployed for different purposes. I signed up for all of them, just in case. Now my phone buzzes throughout the day for even minor activity (e.g., “odor investigation”) but in theory will blast loud noises for a wildfire or earthquake.

Personally my sense is what works best for brands on fedi is (1) using the platform to spread relevant information (announcements, stories, updates), (2) engaging in actual conversations with folks (in as much as possible), and (3) not even attempting to go viral (clickbait doesn’t work well here, thankfully).
