But yeah, it's not as big a deal as it's made out to be. Like, I pointed at Nix earlier, right? Downloads multiple versions of the same library for compatibility reasons. It doesn't really matter, storage is cheap.

It'd be lovely if that were always the case. But I'm pretty sure there's always orphaned dependencies on my system every time I use the native package manager to uninstall something. (admittedly, though, this can happen with Flatpak too--though I prefer it there than in my distro packages)

Flatpak does its best to simplify it as much as it can, but yeah, things are still a bit rocky with them. I'm particularly bothered by the theming inconsistencies that always seem to come with those things, though it isn't *usually* too difficult to fix for anyone technically savvy enough to care. Doubt it's the only hiccup though.

Anyway now that I've addressed the post itself, those beliefs are not what bring "Linux elitist" to mind when I read this conversation. It's moreso your talk about the "Linux way" (read: OSS purism) and the near-complete denial of anything good coming from Flatpaks or Wayland existing. A few snippets from earlier posts of yours:

Since we're talking explicitly about BBC News, I'd like to point out that AllSides.com consistently ranks them as [leaning slightly left of center](https://www.allsides.com/news-source/bbc-news-media-bias#MayJuly2024).
However, it *is* very slight, and (in the latest review) it was mostly admitted right-leaning reviewers that came to the conclusion.

Hm... Okay, I'll concede the point a bit.
Here are parts of (using your example) a war that can be reported on without the presence of your own opinion:
- The death counts
- The places directly effected
- Leader opinions on opposing country
- Expert opinions on potential ramifications
- Citizen opinions on what is happening to them personally
The last three are tricky, though, because even though they belong to other people, they're still opinions. To be completely neutral, you have to be careful to include *every side*, because if you only shine the spotlight on a few, you are leading people to agree with them because you are not making them aware of the alternatives.
Gotta get the republicans and the democrats. And the leftists. And libertarians. Punks? Catholics? *Actually* including *every side* is a fool's task. The end result is usually that it's all the opinions of (somewhat?) normal people.
Normal people can be wrong.
That is why "centrist" is a bias.

Who decides what is news-worthy?
Leftists, rightists, and centrists will all consider different events to be worthy of an article. If you've ever seen a sponsorship segment from Ground News, one of their selling points was exposing [the results](https://ground.news/blindspot) of this simple fact.
Even if the articles themselves are written completely neutrally, the act of running a news station AT ALL is an act that will expose your bias.

I'm going to use this small conversation as a jumping-off point to draw a distinction between two very different kinds of people:
**"Capitalist" vs. "Businessman"**
The **capitalist** wants an ideal capitalist society; *fair competition* between marketeers, with the consumers as the judges. People would know about alternatives. "Vote with your wallet" would work.
The **businessman** wants to be successful, and nothing else. Do as little work as possible for as much as possible, and that usually means *not* playing fair. They're the FAANGs sucking the wagie's blood.
When people complain about "capitalism", they're complaining about what businessmen have done to it.
I first thought about this because of a Unity runtime fee video that compared it to feudalism--you know, the lord-based economic system where Coconut Island is the default. I'd link to it if I remembered what video it was.

Even if the article itself is written in a completely neutral manner, the fact that the article exists means that the writer considered it important to report. I think it's impossible to make decisions like that without some emotion (therefore bias) coming into play.

Android OSes have hardware-specific downloads because ARM-based systems have no consistency between each other. There is no standard for device enumeration on ARM, so kernels have to be rebuilt for use between devices.
It's a mess. But that doesn't make it a ROM.

But yeah, I mostly agree. Semantics, and arguments about them, suck. They are messy, the number one cause of [interjections for just a moment](https://devrant.com/rants/1051771/id-just-like-to-interject-for-a-moment-what-you-re-referring-to-as-linux-is-in-f), and the main reason I will [never use certain words](https://kitty.social/notes/a14f9vc7f8zb09g7).
Language is messy, and I get the temptation to argue about word choice. But I struggle to imagine what else "Android ROM" could mean.
...but there can also be misconceptions about what a "ROM" is, based on that term...

If it's an executable, it can do anything, as long as it's in userspace.
Less so for an image file, of course... But if the image file you download can exploit a vulnerability in your image viewing software, the infected image viewer can now do anything to your computer, as long as it's in userspace.

Well now that I'm thinking about browsers... is Pale Moon still relevant? At all?
Conceptually it's very nice; a fork of Firefox from before they started sucking, I guess. They're still going all in on XUL/UXP. I like the nostalgic look.
I heard that their browser rendering engine, Goanna, has to fork Gecko every so often just to stay up to date. But I have no idea how to check that.
Maintainers might still suck?
Anyone have thoughts?

Of course that became a lot harder with the M* series of Macs...now whatever OS you install has to be compatible with ARM and all the silly stuff that Apple's using.
Asahi Linux is currently the only non-Apple OS that runs on M2s as far as I'm aware

So kitty.social has 6x the character limit of mastodon.social. How much of my unrealistic(?) dream OS can I describe?
- bytecode VM (for portability)
- can run on underpowered hardware (even a microcontroller?)
- can run atop another OS using bytecode VM
- everything is lightweight and runs alright (or, on modern hardware, REALLY FAST)
- privilege-based permissions system
- an app can run another app and give it access to functions (this is how the GUI will work - the desktop runs an app and gives it access to window-related functions) (wait, are all GUI programs technically plugins then?)
