Great idea to list all your feed. 👍

2026-04-03 21:26:49 UTC

After years relying only on social feeds, I’m going back to reading blogs via RSS on my laptop using NewsFlash on GNOME. 📰
I was honestly surprised to find that some blogs I usually read still don’t provide a feed in 2026. 🙃
If you self host your blog and write about Open Source, Python, Django, Linux or similar topics, please add an RSS/Atom feed. Otherwise people like me simply won’t know when you publish. 💡
Please boost. 🙏

After thinking a bit more about Ned’s post and the discussion here, it really felt like the right moment to make expectations around AI-assisted contributions clearer in Django.
So I opened a proposal to add an AI/LLM contribution policy.
The idea isn’t to police tools, but to keep responsibility clearly human and reduce ambiguity for contributors and maintainers.
If you’re interested, have a look and share your thoughts:
https://forum.djangoproject.com/t/proposal-add-an-ai-llm-contribution-policy-to-django/44298

RE: https://hachyderm.io/@nedbat/116133445557306539
I got Ned's point, but I don’t think we can treat Claude (or similar tools) at the same level as a person.
We've never added tools (e.g. isort, Black, Ruff, ...) as co-authors of commits, even when they generated 100% of a commit.
Listing Claude as a co-author of a commit put it the same level as a person, but it's a tool.
The author of a commit is a person responsible for the code they submit, without shifting that responsibility to the tool, or worse, to the project maintainers.

I like your plan :) I'm happy to support it. Let's made a proposal to the community.
Do you think Zulip is better thank Matrix, as an alternative to Discord? Since @npub1pnc…ru22 had a bad experience with Matrix.

Thanks Timo for sharing your points and the article, very interesting and helpful for the discussion.
From what I understand, there are several open alternatives, but none of them are free from trade-offs or operational issues (e.g Matrix)
That probably makes the decision even more pragmatic: if we ever move away from Discord, we should choose something stable and usable in practice, even if it has fewer shiny features.
Reliability matters more than stars and badges. :)

thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts.
1. If the change doesn't impact the Django's Discord server in March it can do in April or when they decide. I'm saying we can't be sure.
2. It's great that you have some experience with Matrix . What's the main pain there? I found this resource that seems interesting https://joinmatrix.org/
3. I totally agree

2026-02-10 23:29:13 UTC

With news that Discord is moving toward stricter age/ID verification and privacy concerns around this shift, I’m wondering whether Open Source communities like Python and Django should consider alternatives to Discord. 🤔
Platforms like Matrix or Zulip might better respect privacy and freedom of access.
What do you think about a migration away from Discord?

Hello fediverse 👋
I’m trying to find Python meetups or Python folks in Iceland 🇮🇸
Is there a local Python community, a meetup, or just developers hacking on Python between glaciers and volcanoes? 🐍❄️🌋
If you know people, groups, or past events, I’d love a pointer. Thanks!

It collects non-human accounts only: Django projects, conferences, podcasts, news, and community initiatives.
No personal accounts, just things you may want to follow once and forget.

If you know other Django-related project accounts on the Fediverse, please reply and suggest them.

I’ve realized that many posts and photos from conferences I shared before joining Mastodon (2019) are now basically trapped on Twitter/X.
They still exist, but accessing them has become difficult.
I’m considering moving to a self-hosted Mastodon instance and importing some old tweets to “free” them.
Has anyone tried this?
Any guides or tools to recommend? 👀

One thing though: I noticed Django on the Med 🏖️ didn’t make it into your “maybe next year” conference list … I’ll pretend to be offended just this once. 😂 What do you think @npub1mfs…ngvj ?

you were one of the first in our community to seriously explore this space, through many concrete experiments and write-ups, including the recent post about migrating JustHTML from Python to JavaScript.
I don’t know if you get to read all notifications and mentions here on Mastodon, but if you have any thoughts on how to handle AI-generated contributions in large Open Source projects like Django, they would really help this discussion. 😃

Thanks for the link @npub1vvj…puhp ,I didn’t know that Python.org page and it’s very useful. Django has a similar section for AI-assisted security reports:
https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/internals/security/#ai-assisted-reports
What I find interesting is how GNOME, Python, and Django converge on the same idea: AI can be a tool, but responsibility, disclosure, and reviewability stay with the contributor, otherwise the cost shifts to maintainers.
Maybe the next step is finding a shared place to collect and compare these approaches.

2025-12-17 09:57:08 UTC

- reply

Thanks for the comments @npub1vvj…puhp what I take away from it is that the problem is not AI writing code, but the way it shifts workload, legal risk, and collaborative responsibility onto maintainers, breaking the social processes of Open Source.
With more and more examples like this, also for projects like Django, we probably need to find shared technical or governance approaches to protect maintainers without blocking development or discouraging contributions.
How could we start doing this?

2025-12-17 08:27:18 UTC

- reply

Continuing to listen to @npub120g…wm7n , the topic of AI-generated contributions came up. 🎧
Shortly after, I read a post from the GNOME Extensions team explaining why they had to add a new review rule. They are seeing more and more patches generated with AI, full of unnecessary code, bad patterns, and little real understanding behind them. 🤖
https://blogs.gnome.org/jrahmatzadeh/2025/12/06/ai-and-gnome-shell-extensions/
It feels like a shared Open Source problem. Have you seen similar issues elsewhere? 🐛

It’s already the third and last morning of Django On The Med 🏖️
After a nice bike ride through the countryside of Palafrugell and a great breakfast, we are ready to start the day. 🚴‍♂️☕
A lot has been done in the past two days, but we aim to finish more great work today and leave a mark for future progress when we return home. 🌍✨

We spent another wonderful evening together in the lovely town of Calella de Palafrugell. 🌆
Dinner was amazing again, with great conversations about food and especially the local wine. 🍷
We ended the night with delicious ice cream and a peaceful walk by the sea, the air is still warm and full of Mediterranean calm. 🌊

Another wonderful afternoon spent with amazing people 😊
Taking time to recharge after a morning of intense work is essential to balance our energy and take care of ourselves 🏖️
During big conferences, it’s usually hard to find moments like this, and surely not on a beautiful beach of the Costa Brava 🌊

The second morning of Django On The Med 🏖️ just finished and it’s amazing how much we achieved together.
Many new ideas and feature proposals came up while working side by side. Sometimes, being together really helps speed up things. 💪
We also had fun breaking the pony-shaped piñata! 🐴 Now it’s time to relax a bit before the afternoon.
Sending our greetings to Wagtail Space 2025 as it’s about to start! 🌍

We want to thank the City Council of Palafrugell for providing the venue. 🇪🇸
After a short bike ride to get there and a nice breakfast offered by Python España, we’re ready to keep working together to make Django even better! 😊🚴‍♂️

What if Django had an automatic ORM feature matrix — showing which features each database really supports, straight from the code? 🧩
I’ve shared some ideas (with demo data!) on how it could work and why it’d be great for Django’s docs 💡

This will be the very first Django sprint event, happening this October in Palafrugell, Spain — organized by me and Carlton 👩‍💻

Should we migrate the communication platforms of our FOSS projects (e.g., Python, Django, …) to Matrix? 🗳️
The idea of avoiding the vendor lock-in is increasingly widespread 🔓

The day before yesterday was the birthday of the American novelist Jack London 🐺
You can read the Standard eBook version of many of his works, including:
• White Fang
• The call of the Wild
• The sea-wolf
• Martin Eden

I honestly don't understand the great exodus of Pythonistas from Mastodon to Bluesky 🤷‍♂️
I find it less intuitive, and most importantly I can't edit posts. Is it just me?
I'll continue to be more active here in the Fediverse than there and I invite everyone to do the same 🤗

Sooner or later I'll expect you in Italy to have not only a cappuccino, but many other good things together. 🍝🍷
I'll just mention that at the end of May 2025 there will be PyCon Italia. 🗓️
It could be a good excuse to stop by and take a tour with your family. 🧳

The Starter Pack feature for Mastodon from @npub1c23…7hg6 is very popular 📈
I particularly liked the addition of the feature "Starter Packs Containing You" 🎁
https://fedidevs.com/starter-packs/?tab=containing
It would be great to have some statistics directly in the list view of all starter packs, like number of likes, number of accounts, ... 📊

Forjeo seems to me to be a great choice of freedom and lightness. 👍🏻
It would have been great to have an alternative based on a community-driven language, like Python or Rust, but I don't know if they exist. 🤷‍♂️

Can someone that are using Bluesky summary why? And what are the similarities of advantages over the Fediverse and Mastodon? I'm more interested in aspects like open license, standards, accessibility than in the number of people that are over there. Thanks.

Growing up in Italy, I never celebrated Halloween 👻
Around this time of year, where I live, we harvest olives to make olive oil, eat roasted chestnuts, and try young wine 🍷
But this year I decided to dig out a jack-o'-lantern, too, but with the Python logo 🎃
