One of my goto weekend breakfasts is a dutch baby. It’s like a cross between a souffle and a pancake. It’s simple and you can have it on the table in ~30 minutes.
Last week and this weekend I threw some sliced bananas into it and it’s easily 10x better. Permanent spot in the rotation now. Here’s how you make it:
Set your oven to 425ºF.
Put a big pan on the stove with 4 Tbsp (half a stick) of butter on low/medium-low heat.
While that melts, start mixing your batter. It’s super easy:
- 3 room temp eggs (pop them in hot water for a few minutes if they’re out of the fridge)
- 1/2 cup of roomish temp milk (20 seconds in the microwave if its cold)
- 1/2 cup of flour
- 1 Tbps of sugar
- splash of vanilla
That’s it. Just mix that up until its smooth.
Your butter should be bubbly. Slice up 2 bananas and splread them out in a single layer in the butter. Let them simmer in the butter for like 2 minutes until they’re soft and your kitchen smells amazing.
Dump the batter into the pan on top of everything. You dont need to stir or anything, just dump it in there and give it a little shake. Throw the pan into the oven for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, it should be puffy and golden. Drop the heat to 300 and cook for another 5minutes.
Take the pan out. The pan is going to be HOT. Leave an ovenmit on the handle so you dont accidentally grab the handle while you’re cutting it.
Cut it into quarters (or whatever you want).
Traditionally dutch babies are served with powedered sugar, syrup, lemon juice, or some combination of them. But there’s so much sweetness from the bananas that we just eat it plain.
So there you go. Easy, 30 minute breakfast that looks really complicated and impressive (seriously when you pull this thing out of the oven you’ll be shocked. It puffs up around the edges like a souffle). And it’s got some protein and fruit in it.

Right now with a lot of presigned protocols (like lightning commitment transactions), you include a separate output thats small so that if you need to fee-bump the transaction you can CPFP that output. One problem with this is you need to have some funds locked up in this anchor. Another is that for something like lightning, each side needs to have an anchor. And also anchors are sort of unique and ad hoc. Instagibbs has been working on ephemeral anchors which are like a standardized 0-value anyone can spend output. So you dont have funds locked up, you only need one anchor and either party can bump it, and its composable with other protocols. The actual output is an OP_TRUE and then a little two byte tag. This release of bitcoin standardizes that output so nodes will relay those transactions. They’ve been consensus valid, but until now you would have had to hand them to a miner

Looks like IBD is getting ~30% faster, full-rbf by default, and pay-to-anchor is now standard (SUPER useful anchor outputs for CPFPing transactions, making it easier to manage fees for presigned tx protocols, like lightning but other applications too!), and i am OVER THE MOON about the move to cmake for the build system

I think it’s fun to play with. I like how simple the interface is and as a result how much software has popped up around it. I’m very skeptical that it finds mainstream adoption for traditional payments, but i think there’s a usecase around SaaS/IaaS/PaaS billing and metering that could be really interesting.
So I’m a fan of the project, not really sure where it will end up, and that’s great.

Lightning wallets are hard. Non custodial lightning wallets are harder. Making a business out of an economically sustainable non custodial lightning wallet that is privacy preserving and competitive is insanely hard.
Sometimes things don’t work out. Even good ideas built by brilliant people sometimes (most of the time) don’t work out.

If you re-use a nonce for two different signatures with the same key, it leaks the key.
Imagine a UTXO is encumbered with a script that says “you have to use 7” as the nonce.
If you can spend that UTXO and you sign more than one transaction spending it, you leak your private key.
Lots of interesting applications (especially in multi party settings) where you can make it costly for someone to sign two conflicting transactions

In the current proposal for CAT (BIP-420), its Just Another Opcode. The check is that it fails if you try to create a stack element longer than 520 bytes.
In the proposal from @npub179e…lz4s , there is a variable operations budget (varops) and if you exceed the budget, your script is invalid. In this model, the “cost” for an operation is based on what kind of operation it is (add is cheaper than mul) as a function of its input length(s).

@npub1m6y…mzj9 gave me a walkthrough of the fedimint module interface at bitcoin++. really neat. The tldr is that you can have the federation run a module that vends ${whatever} in exchange for ecash.
Having a mint be a small closed market for different services that you pay for with that market's ecash is a really interesting model.
For example, you could make a cloud services market where you have a module for object storage, a module for serverless compute, a module for some SaaS service, etc. The modules/backing services could be made by different companies or teams, and then they delegate account management and last-mile billing to the mint (because its just bitcoin in, bitcoin out).
I'm pretty skeptical ecash for mass-adoption end user payments, but I think ecash for a pluggable platforms of related services makes a ton of sense.

There’s a bunch of folks doing interesting (sometimes truly bizarre) things in script like implementing MUL with double-and-add or merklized lookup tables, trying to implement a stark verifier, etc. so far we’ve found that the 1000 element stack depth limit is something you need to be aware of, but isn’t *usually* an issue. And i think the places it gets bumped into would be trivially fixed if the stack element limit was raised. Anecdotal, but supports the view that 1000 elements is plenty roomy (*especially* if a stack element was able to be up to 4mb)
