When only 1% of people could read and write, they could communicate in a way in which the other 99% could not participate.
Right now, less than 1% of people in the world are comfortable with Public/Private key identity.
Those that couldn't read and write found it difficult to own property as they couldn't read the contracts. They had to rely on third parties for verification.
Those that haven't yet learned about private keys rely on platforms to verify the identities that they do not own. The digital content that they publish or purchase is owned by the platforms.
Everything on platforms is rented, everything on Nostr is owned.
Without private property there is no freedom.
The good news is that learning about private keys is much easier than learning to read and write. So the emancipation of the serfs in the digital space might happen a whole lot quicker than it did in the physical space.
The internet is a revolution much like the printing press was.

Simple answer is yes.
Until recently we owned nothing on the internet.
Bitcoin gives us money that we can own.
Nostr gives us identity that we can own.
Fanfares gives us media that we can own.
Of course legacy structures will always push custodial solutions. They will be easier and people that choose them will periodically get ripped off.

I agree with everything that Matt says in this video, with one slight caveat. The way to get the bitcoin that you want is to vote with your money. That is your power.
If the BTC444 fork starts with just 5% of the mining network, then it can start to get traction. The thing that will make the miners switch, is if the price of the new fork is higher than its relative hash power. For example, if the price of BTC444 is 10% of the old btc price and it has only 5% of the hash, then it is twice as profitable for the miners to mine BTC444 rather than the old one.
Miners are economically incentivesed actors, they will produce what people will pay for.
After the fork everyone will have both versions of bitcoin in their wallet. You can sit tight and play it safe, that way you will certainly end up with the winning bitcoin either way.
Alternatively, you can become an active part of shaping the future of bitcion by selling some of your spam chain bitcion for some clean chain bitcoin. It will be quite cheap at first.
Pay for the bitcoin that want to own and miners will produce what you pay for.
This is how capitalism is supposed to work.
The core devs are attempting a coup, but we have the real power.
If you think about how almost all of the OG bitcoin hodlers really don't like ordinals, then you can probably have a good guess as to who is going to win!

Correction: there were no prosecutions:
In July 2019, an anonymous BSV transaction embedded CSAM images in a ~100KB OP_RETURN output (pre-Genesis, when BSV allowed ~100KB, similar to BTC v30 now). The block was mined, making the content immutable and queryable via explorers (e.g., Blockchair). Exact txid wasn’t widely publicized for ethical reasons, but CoinGeek and BSV Wiki confirmed it.
Interpol and EU Authorities issued a notice in late 2019 urging BSV node operators to filter or prune the content.
BSV has an unlimited OP_RETURN field.

If some miners amend their software to ignore blocks that have an OP_RETURN > 80 bytes, then they will create soft fork.
Their chain will be shorter, it won't recognised by exchanges or wallets at first, but that chain will be more resistant to legal attacks. I accept that legal attacks can still happen for other data exists on the blockchain. But as Nick Szabo recently pointed out, the threshold of proof is much lower when content is held in one place one OP_RETURN. The content is easily accessible and viewable with tools that everyone has on their computer.
A new mining network would be small at first, but that version of Bitcoin is more resistant to attacks, then it has the potential of becoming the main chain over time.
How things pan out in the future is dependent on how governments around the world react. But we have precendent with Bitcoin SV where the EU prosecuted node runners for content that was in the enlarged OP_RETURN.
If there is any chance the we can save Bitcoin from this malicious attack, then it at least deserves some consideration.

It has been since segwit, but the process of retrieving data and viewing it from segwit is much more complicated.
Retrieving from op_return is easy, so easy that a court will likely deem that the node runner is storing illegal content, because their computer will almost certainly contain the tools that can be used to view the content.

55% of miners have now adopted Core v30.
The doors are now open to send transactions to the blockchain that include any form of image or video to miner.
The miners will include it in the blockchain and it will be there forever.
From that point onwards people that run nodes will be at risk of prosecution for hosting and distributing illegal content.
Anyone that doesn't like bitcoin will do this. That could include, shitcoin projects, intelligence agencies, Peter Todd.
It is really not a question of 'if' this will happen, more a question of 'when' will this happen?
Sooner or later, the government of one of the 195 countries in the world, that doesn't like having a competing currency that they can't control, will prosecute someone for running bitcoin a node that contains easily accessible illegal content.
The potential for prosecution with 'plain text' op_return data is on a different level to any ordinals that were stored in the witness data before. Simple tools that exist on the computer of anyone running a node can be used to access and view the material.
People will get scared away from Bitcoin nodes and we will lose decentralisation.
The media backlash against bitcoin will be more severe. Users of Bitcoin will be branded criminals and publicly shamed.

It IS significantly harder to retrieve and view images from witness data compared to OP_RETURN data:
Witness data is embedded in Taproot script-path spends
Spread across the witness structure in a specific encoding format
Requires specialized tools/indexers (like ord software) to:
Identify which transactions contain inscriptions
Parse the witness data structure
Extract and reassemble the content
Render it as viewable media
Not straightforward with standard Bitcoin Core RPC calls
OP_RETURN Retrieval:
Data is directly in the OP_RETURN output field
Simple hex-to-binary conversion
Easy to extract with basic Bitcoin Core commands (getrawtransaction)
Straightforward to decode and view
Much more accessible to anyone, including law enforcement
Legal Liability Implications:
This is actually a crucial distinction:
Witness data: "I'm running infrastructure; the data is technically there but deeply embedded and not easily accessible"
Large OP_RETURN: "I'm storing easily retrievable files that anyone can extract with basic tools"
From a legal defense standpoint, the accessibility and ease of retrieval matters for arguments about:
"Knowing possession" vs passive infrastructure
Whether you're acting as a "host" or just network infrastructure affects the likelihood of prosecution.
In reality, some government in the world that doesn't like their banking system being circumvented will prosecute a node runner. They will put them in prison in order to make an example. Other node runners around the world will be scared and will stop thinking full nodes. Decentralisation will be sacrificed for a change that never needed to be made.
