I've been going through the #Farrer by-election results for first prefs by polling place, and it's a useful way to find the small towns where I'd feel quite uncomfortable if I stopped for a visit. Which is a legit consideration given how often I'm in tiny towns in that electorate.
Places where 76.8% of voters chose One Nation are unlikely to feel safe to anyone who's LGBTIQA+ or environmentally conscious or isn't white or any number of other aspects of identity. This is a shame, I thought we were making progress in some of those towns.
I used to pick "town to stop at" based on the combo of EV charger + pie shop. Now it'll be calculated based on best pie shop from a subset of towns with a One Nation vote below 37%, and an EV charger. So you create the subset of low-ON vote towns first, then from that a subset of towns with EV chargers, then rank them by best to worst pie shop.

During the COVID emergency period 2021 and 2022, I was one of the ACT Ministers making Cabinet decisions about public health regulations. Every day for 67 consecutive days, there was at least one Cabinet meeting, sometimes two meetings on the same day, including on weekends. We were given briefs with the evidence base for why certain regulations could reduce transmission and save lives, and the differences in new variants as they emerged.
Now I know where some of that data came from. Thank you Associate Professor Minh Bui for using your computing skills to help solve complex problems in understanding COVID strains. Evidence based decision making saves lives.

Two weeks ago, this fella was yelping in pain when he took a few steps, and stumbling a lot.
Lots of TLC, rest, some pain meds for a week, and joint support supplements, and he was happy to go for a short walk this morning with no problems.

On 31 October 2025, because #ClimateChange is scary, #RisingTide put on a film night in Braidwood with some great musicians who drove up from #Melbourne. It was a lot of fun getting everyone together for good music, good food, and good plans to change our future. And Clancy Walker, one of the musicians, has included some footage in his latest music video:

I have a question about the rise of automation and machine learning to do work that customers will pay for.
When all the work that is valuable enough for us to pay for it to be done is being done by machines that do not need people employed to manage or operate the machines, who will be the customers of the work the machines produce? Because without a job, you have no money to be a customer.
Where do the billionaires think their customers will come from when all the employees are replaced by machines?

PILL TESTING SAVES LIVES
Not just at music festivals. It can save lives every day if there’s a place to get your drugs checked before you put them in your body.
It works in Canberra. And believe me when I say we are not special in this city.
The people who use drugs to dance all night, or dull chronic pain, or make the mental trauma hurt less, or change their body shape, or relax when they’re too tense, or manage their ADHD that they can’t afford to see a psychiatrist for, are the same in this city as any other city.
But because we have pill testing, they’re less likely to die from a bad batch or unusual purity level.
And because our permanent pill testing service is run by a peer worker NGO, there’s less stigma in asking for drug harm reduction advice when you go in to get your gear tested.

also I never got to participate in a chess tournament as a kid because I didn’t know anyone else in my town who could play. So as the youth justice Minister in Canberra, we funded a young woman who’s an international chess master to run a tournament for the young people in the youth detention centre. And then I got to visit and play against them too, and was absolutely delighted to have my arse kicked by them. Some very smart kids with some excellent logic and strategy skills.

I think I have become a bird watcher.
I’ve been recording what I find when I’m at the commune (I joined one on the south coast about a year ago, but have been coming here for years with friends). Today I saw a bird that could have been either a Pied Cormorant, or a Little Pied Cormorant, but I didn’t get close enough to see the colour of its legs. So I cannot record anything and shall have to go look for it again tomorrow.
What have I done? Do not install bird spotting apps if you have a tendency to competitive gaming.

the referral from GP to specialist has to be renewed every 12 months because of Medicare rules. That’s a Mark Butler problem to fix.
The referrals for tests is absolutely a tech problem. Every practice and pathology lab uses a different proprietary system, with no agreed standard to enable APIs to securely pass data between them with patient consent.

I'm told that for 2 bedroom apartments, having 2 bathrooms makes them more attractive rentals (two people house-sharing get a bathroom each). But it adds at least $30K to the build to fit out an average 7 square metre space as a bathroom as opposed to a study or small bedroom.

2026-01-17 23:13:44 UTC

Houses with more bathrooms than bedrooms bug me. Bathrooms and kitchen require a lot of resources compared to living or sleeping spaces, but you spend less time in them. So I don't understand why you'd have more of those spaces in a building than multi-use living or sleeping spaces.
Anyway, there's my thoughts on #AffordableHousing and #ClimateChange for this morning.

Thinking about trying a new iOS Mastodon app (currently on Metatext). I want one where I can set my default timeline to show as one of my lists, not the full list of accounts I follow. Suggestions / boosts appreciated.

2026-01-12 22:27:59 UTC

One of the things I like about Mastodon’s algorithm-free space is that it’s so easy to find interesting accounts to follow when I want more.
All I do is toot about something I’m interested in, then wait a few hours to see who stars or boosts the toot. Those people are likely to also have that interest and are worth following.

I’ve been doing this regularly for years.
When I was at Navy, I think in 2005, we wanted to declare an Email Free Day. If you wanted to engage with someone in a non-operational context, you had to pick up the phone or walk over to their desk. Just for one day, get people thinking about what channels they use to communicate and how effective they are. Captain didn’t want to give up email for even a day, so it didn’t happen

2025-12-31 21:25:25 UTC

Today’s task is to clean up my data storage, and declare email bankruptcy.
Email bankruptcy means I pick a date, and archive or delete all emails not responded to before that date. Then I publicly declare the date of my email bankruptcy. Anyone who sent me a thing before that date knows they’re not getting a reply unless they resend it.

Woke up this morning to see my partner, out our bedroom window, walking across the roof in his t-shirt and boxers, picking up a bird in his hands and carrying it away…
This little kingfisher was being attacked by myna birds.
He popped the kingfisher into a little pot on my balcony to recover. 15 mins later went to check on him and said “hey little guy, how you feeling?”
Kingfisher gave him a look like “fuck off you big scary human” and flew away. :bunneheart:

I visited London in December 2023 to see some programs in your NHS that we were thinking of running in Canberra. They said some of the key things in their model of care have been done that way for over 50 years, but nobody in Australia’s public health system is doing them yet. Not only is it free, there’s also things you do over in the UK that are world-leading in quality care.

By the way, we could massively reduce Australia’s contribution by shutting down the world’s largest coal port, in Newcastle. It exports coal that produces 1% of global carbon emissions, and equal to 100% of Australia’s domestic carbon emissions from all sources.

Study after study has shown there are community-wide increases in stress and anxiety, substance addiction, and relationship breakdown after a disaster like fires or floods. Even heatwaves impact on mental health and experiences of violence.
Action on climate change will reduce stress, anxiety, grief, social isolation, experiences of violence, and substance use disorders. We also need more community mental health services or existing needs.

Following my question a week ago about Australian foods, what’s something you would go out to eat if you wanted to treat yourself?
Like, “today I missed my bus and people were rude to me at work and the weather is bad, but I’m sitting in a cafe now eating <your fave thing> and maybe life is not so bad after all”.

My partner has come up with the most Dad tech solution ever for electricity bill management.
Change all the light globes to programmable coloured LEDs.
Red in peak electricity price time, amber in shoulder, green in off peak.
If the lights go red, that’s your cue to run around the house turning off unnecessary appliances and lights.

The result seems to tell us that Tasmanian voters don’t want different people in government. They mostly want the people they voted for the previous time around to behave like grown-ups who can negotiate, compromise, and be responsive to the community.

Things I love about my Mastodon timeline: at any moment, someone can just drop in and say “my day sucks, send puppies!” And random people will reply with pictures of puppies.
If anyone needs it right now, this is one of my all time fave pictures of my puppies. Pretty sure Harry (upside down puppy) is saying “come play with me! I’m adorable” while Chase (older bulldog) is thinking “I can’t even with this guy”. :blobcatgiggle:

the rest of the story is quite interesting, especially what’s being tried in Canada. Will be interesting to see how their new regulations affect the market.
But I didn’t like the throw-away line in the opening about how drug use is fuelling house prices. Stigmatising drug users, especially if they have an addiction, doesn’t help anyone.

I’ve been working full time almost continuously since I was 18. Only one year of unpaid leave for having babies. Since I was 25, I have earned an above median salary. I still don’t have a $3m+ superannuation account.
People with the kind of income that accumulates that kind of balance can afford to pay an accountant to help them plan their affairs, and they can also afford to pay taxes.

I had some handed-down Onkaparingas identical to that when my babies were born 20 years ago, but they were already well worn and had a few little holes and frayed edges. I cut them up, dyed them dark blue and bright red, sewed ribbon binding round the edges, and they became cot blankets. I’ve kept them for the next generation of babies (so they’ll go to the original owner’s great- or great-great-grandchildren).

Good morning Fediverse.
I woke up to a text that my train home is now a rail replacement coach, and I am quite grumpy about that.
My order of preference for travel is train, then plane, then bus.
Trains to Canberra replaced by buses for the entire week, otherwise I would have just changed my booking and got a train tomorrow.

it is the egg of the thought-to-be-extinct Eastern Australian Sand Dragon.
As you can see from the large size of the egg, this is not a small, cute critter. They grow to about the size of a bus. Their usual foods were medium sized megafauna, such as the 3m tall 230kg kangaroo (Procoptodon goliah), but they could go weeks between hunting sessions if they brought down a Diprotodon optatum (3 ton wombat).
Hatch this egg with caution.

A cold day is a good day for baking dinners and cakes to get us through the next week. If this looks like a lot, keep in mind there’s a young man who plays rugby union, plus a couple of uni students, plus two middle aged adults. And I chopped lots of veggies for making quick stir fried noodles and side dishes. See alt text for what I made.

Sunny afternoon so I went for a walk around the Siev X memorial in Weston Park.
146 children, 142 mothers, and 65 fathers died when the 20m long boat they were in sank in October 2001.
The memorial was put together by 300 schools, churches and community groups to remind us that we want to be a nation where love is stronger than fear, and kindness is stronger than greed.

Has anyone used those recordable buttons to get their dog to tell them when they want food, outside, walks, pats, bedtime etc?
I don’t know if this is a great idea because I’ll know the difference between “I want water” and “I want to go outside to play”, or if I’d rather just learn what Chase is trying to tell me in his own way and not get him to push a button for it.

what if we fine Labor and Liberal politicians one investment property per week until they build enough social / public housing - and tenancy management support, for those who need it - that nobody is homeless?

2025-05-09 22:12:18 UTC

Liberal voters tend to skew to an older demographic, which is also the case with postal voters. Absentee voters are out of their home area, and can include uni students and other people who recently moved to a new electorate, and that tends to skew to a younger demographic that aligns to the Greens voter demographic.

2025-05-09 21:31:11 UTC

absentee votes happen at prepoll or on the day, but in a different electorate (eg interstate, or other side of the city). Postal votes are often done in advance by people who know they won’t be able to attend a polling place on the day, and can’t or prefer not to prepoll. So the demographics are quite different, and postal votes may have been made before some key moment at the end of the campaign.

they already did the chicanery on election day, and it was intended to direct the flow of preferences from Greens voters away from Jessie and towards ALP. If the ALP candidate wins off a small preference flow, their chicanery may have changed the election result.

no, you just get the forms you’ll need to send to the AEC. It would be a logistics headache for the AEC to also send out the HTVs with them, especially as many parties hadn’t decided on their preference recommendations before postal votes were issued.
