So apparently, Bitwarden'S browser extension can get out of sync so bad, that it can not even refresh itself, because credentials are too outdated.
Fun, almost lost my X account to that. x.x Good thing I have it cached on my other devices but that was still too close for confort...

I saw a client for that in awesome-nostr but iirc it's dead.
Reposting so someone can vibe it. We literally have everything here.
FYI: Piped uses Matrix to synchronize with other instances - use Nostr instead, less complicated. The biggest important part is ytproxy - that is the part that handles the real business. It consists of extractor, stream curator and coordinator.
I have my mind in another project, but this is something I have thought of too. Nostr/Blossom is a super "native" way to archive, re-stream and forward this stuff very well. Although I am not a fan of IPFS, for persisting things long-term, it might be plausible to check archives in there to use content-addressing across serverrs or perhaps to pick up files that were long lost on Blossom servers out of IPFS? Just a chicken thought, really.

Last night in rehap. I am excited to go home with refreshed energy and all. A random idea hit my mind - not gonna use it but:
You can use PassKeys for nsecs. Basically, you authenticate using the WebAuthn stuff, derive a symmetric key from the material, and then request the server to send you the encrypted nsec - and decrypt it in the client and then just... use it. Problem is tho, the nsec will now live in JS land within the page context which is far less secure than an extension I would assume - let alone a remote signer or whatever.
But... what if you were to use that, to offer the user the option to get to know your site/app first by using very conventional things and later, like in the settings, allowed them to retrive their nsec to switch to a dedicated extension, bunker or signer? o.o
The worst option would be to take the old username/password approach, stack OTP on it, and then use the whole shebang to decrypt the encrypted blob. xD
So...
- Bad: username + password + otp: authenticate, retrive encrypted key, decrypt in client - use.
- Nyeh, s'ok: Passkey which itself uses public/private keypairs and has stronger security but still ends in the decrypted nsec being stored...rather "weakly".
- Extension, bunker, signer: Well you know those already I bet. x)
Just a thought experiment I had, tis all.

When I was getting into coding, I first started to just scamble together some PHP stuff because I had no mentor. Later, I learned to at least write a short document describing what you want to achieve: Set goals, estimate usages (of libraries, dependencies, technologies) and annotate a few "I could implement X via Y". Doesnt need to be pretty, nor long, just blurting out your thoughts into text, so you can re-read it and consider the choices.
And the form of the doc? Well, it could be a NIP, it could also be a Word document with a full blown TOC. Doesnt matter - just... write stuff, read it, and eventually you like what you see, and thus it helps you build a road you can walk on.
Not the perfect'est solution in the world and definitively also something very individual but... it's worked for me so far o.o

I have NWC, but its hellishly broken. Most CLN plugins are basically outdated and partially nonfunctional.

When I wanted to take a bus or tain in 2019, it had a high chance to be on time. Now? Not so much.
Ten years before that, so, 2009, the chance of lateness was insanely low and actually a surprise if it happened.
It's just gotten overall bad. And, apparently, we just recently misappropriated a bunch of funds to clear debt instead of investment into rails and stuff. So yay, trend continues. :D

"Community messenger" is kind of my own naming for it - don't worry to much about that. Basically: Signal, SimpleX, Telegram and Whatsapp are "direct messengers" - IRC and public Nostr chats (iirc, kind 9? didnt double check) would be "group messengers". Discord - and its many thousand alternatives like Stoat, Loqa, Nerimity, ... - is what I like to call a "community messenger": A set of channels dedicated to a specific topic/community; be it a community about Touhou or just a community for fans of the Drakengard/Nier series. As said, just a term, really. And, my own quirky way of thinking, I guess... x)
So, yes - Community, Categories, Channels, Threads. That is the model I am aiming for, for my own thingy, with channels being either text, call, or app channels (nabbed this idea from Root) which are just WebXDC archives containing an SPA and that can use `window.nostr` if they need to make new events or whatever. Might be useful for hosting the Piped frontend inside a community, or perhaps a browser game, or something like a WatchTogether-esque service.
I wanted to try Flotilla, but I could not find any relay/community to join, and I was severely confused how to even _do_ that. There was a list of relays, which I tried to click Join on, got a dozen errors, saw no default "Recommended server" to join, and just left in frustration. Have not read the spec of it yet to see if there is something in it I can fully re-use.
But I guess the main difference is that my vision is different. Instead of relay-scoped, many communities exist within one relay, and said relay isn't exactly inactive either; broadcasting call channel states and enforcing light authZ (i.e. for moderation or only sendng certain events to the correct user). The idea is that it should be dead easy for someone at r/selfhosted to spin up a docker container, grab a client, point it at the server, grab a generated admin token from the console and paste it in and thus gain full control of the server. Each server is just stored in a relay-ish list - or, more specifically, each community the user added to their profile is stored together with the relevant server.
So, practically speaking, I am using Nostr both by spec, but also in a more "fenced" way. Instead of pulling a new RPC protocol out of the void, I am using what exists today - and fix my BIGGEST gripe with all the Discord alternatives today: Federation and Decentralization. More specifically, one client has it's identity (npub) and can send events to many servers that may host many communities.
That way, even a company like Patreon, could spin one up and create a community per creator on the platform. If the creator wants to leave Patreon, they can copy the whole thing from one server to another since it's just Nostr relays and they'd just have to "re-create" certain things.
It takes ideas from commonly "liked" centralized services - specifically Discord here, obviously - and also does things I wish Matrix did. It is centralized to that one server, but you can leave and join as you like, yet provides moderation to keep the place from being overswept with bullshit, but uses an easy protocol in Nostr to realize it that won't force you into implementing thousands of switch/match statements to figure out what's what in the object.
This is why I want to implement my own; I have a different vision, and why I will attempt to refrain from ever saying it is "implemented IN nostr" when it _really_ is just "implemented USING nostr".

I want to build a Discord alternative over Nostr - both in backend, and in frontend. And, since my needs include voice calls and screen sharing, I do need to implement WebRTC stuff.

Alright, I've read what I can with the brain I've got.
SFU with trickle-ICE.
- SFU is the relay itself that publishes STUN/TURN details
- ICE candidates are super short-lived replaceable events that can only be seen by relay/SFU (because they contain connection details)
All of those fit into Nostr events - in fact, the SDP is literally a key-value pair list, which can go into tags entirely. And ICE candidates are one long string - so throw that into .content and yeet the event immediately - it is only needed for client-to-server connection. So, technically, it could probably even go over the client-server stuff (like AUTH or REQ, but ICE - and it'd just be added to the active session, after AUTH).
After that, the relay/sfu handles forwarding, no client IPs are actually exposed to other clients (which is a neat side effect) and the server can reject streams that are too big too and ask for lower versions.
All in all, I am quite happy with my findings here. Will take some notes of this into my spec and wire it together.
Once I like my spec as it is, it's time to do the dreaded `bun init`... because no, I am not gonna use Node. I will use as LITTLE JavaScript as I possibly can. XD In fact, I will probably just use TypeScript and leave everything on default and try to use a minimal-but-functional "framework". Lit, Preact, or something.
I want to implement the backend in Go - fiatjaf has written a crapton of stuff for this, so it'd be stupid not to use that. Flotilla is also in Go, IIRC.
But what will really, REALLY matter is the frontend. And I... I have ideas. :3

So, WebRTC offers direct peer to peer, or peer to server to peer. The latter muxes streams, the former does not.
Interesting, I will have to implement both, so people can pick which implementation suits their hardware and respective group sizes.
Oh dear. I am starting to understand why Stoat is having troubble implementing this. xD Almost like dealing with direct media streams and bootstrapping a connection over several network boundaries is...hard??? ERMAHGERD

Learning WebRTC right now to figure out what can go into Nostr events and what can't. And... I am actually a little impressed. SDPs can TOTALLY go into Nostr events, in fact they deadass map directly into tags xD
ICE candidates, STUN/TURN is next - and that one is the complicated one for many reasons. Because at some point, a call connecting several nostriches would need to cross over into a different protocol in WebRTC - which, in turn, needs to be orchestrated.
I want to figure out where I place the border between Nostr and WebRTC to go from coordination to actual connection.
What I will not get around though, is for the relay itself to publish status updates. A little unusual, but can't be avoided unfortunately.
But hey, this is what we have expires_at and replaceable events for. :D
Still, this is quite a rabbit hole. I am pouring all my community management and construction knowledge into this hard.

Nope, just don't.
Connection to crypto currency is a massive turn-off. And money-in-social is very much how people feel about X these days (Twitter never did this - sponsored posts, paid badges etc.)
Leaving it in the settings as an optional is a much nicer way to allow the user to enable and engage with it rather than instantly putting their minds to this.

2 1/2 Jahre Ausbildung.
Als Blinder, in einer sehenden Firma und Schule.
Die Firma nutzt meine Komptetenzen bis zum Anschlag aus - sind eigentlich nur IT Systemhaus aber wenn mal was "low level" kam wie eine Datenrettung oder "dieses Linux" - Kubernetes, Docker, div. appliances, ... - dann war das bei mir.
Und in der Schule? Gruppenarbeiten sind scheisse XD
Ich habs bestanden und überlebt und bin jetzt auf Kur. Langsam hab ich wieder die Energie für Socials - aber davon war die letzten 3 Monate nichts mehr übrig. Also, so, garnix.
Und naja, was machste besser abends in ner Kur als mal wieder die bekloppten Vogelstrauße zu beobachten? XD

If it is the future, then why can't I buy a pack of smokes in my lil' town using my selfhosted CLN?
Because it loves to break, because I lack channel liquidity, which I can not get without swapping. Let alone the vendor needs to do all of those too.
It's baggage. Both, the term "crypto currency" as well as all the tech involved and required. Just buying a credit card terminal and signing up for Square is much easier than bootstrapping coinage.
It is definitively nerdy, fun to explore and - yes, I wasn't joking, I do in fact host a BTC node and my own CLN too - but not everyone can, will or even want's to do that.
Remember when GPUs were scalped for Etherium? Or remember how all ransomware demands payment in crypto currency? _That_ is what most people see, and why this is, what I would honestly consider, an anti-feature.
But hey, clients just...dont have to implement it. Which is nice.

I am drafting my Discord over Nostr alternative.
I've seen enough of the shitty alternatives, the lack of proper federation, the leaning towards another centralized system, the pace of development and the stack(s) being used.
Ugh, this is gonna suck ass. Oh well, here goes...

This is the low level shit I am here for. :D
Interesting, because SNI recently broke my Caddy instance, funnily enough. Specifically, when reverse proxying to a HTTPS host, I previously only had to set SNI for the pass to work correctly, whilst in a newer version, I also had to set Host. Though after that fix, I did not look further, but it was seriously interesting. Hence where my super basic knowledge of SNI came from.
