I recently tried the #appleTV trial subscription. It shows you video ads for other shows sometimes which is annoying...
But what's really cool is that when you have subtitle disabled and go back with the arrow keys it shows the subtitle for a few seconds. That is genius: most of the time I go back because I did not understand what was said. This solves a problem I did not even knew I had and I love that feature. And I hope that the other streaming sites copy this.

there is also a tauri version, we will publish the blogpost about that somewhere in the future.
Also this browser version is not standalone, it still requires one server instance per user that runs deltachat/chatmail core. Ideally it would be just a PWA, but for that #chatmail core needs to be compiled to, and work in wasm: https://support.delta.chat/t/what-would-be-needed-for-a-standalone-web-version-without-a-server-component/3789

Should we change the default keyboard shortcut for sending messages in #deltachat_desktop #deltachat
The question is about whether the `"Enter"` key should create a newline or send the message.
The other shortcuts will stay the same:
- Ctrl/Cmd + Enter is always send
- Shift + Enter is always newline

chatmail core usually takes between 14mb and 60mb of RAM (depending on account count), so the 16 MiB of the #Precursor may be a bit small.
So would require some tinkering to either make #chatmail core take less memory or some swapfile magic.
I guess to make it speedy you would want to load an encryption module onto the FPGA next to the cpu.

it is useful for us to find out how to solve it. we may bake in the best working option into the app.
It is not as hard as you think, environment variables are a basic thing, just start the app from the terminal by it's file path and write the variables in front:
var_name=value path/to/my/program
No compiling involved.

for backup/restore you could build a server that has keeps all accounts online, and has a web interface where your users could download a backup / display a "setup second device" qr code for local network transfer.

You can modify the chatmail relay to keep the messages, but you should probably then make it invite only so you don't just provide tons of free hosting space to random internet strangers.
Alternatively if we know more about the problem case we could develop a solution like automated encrypted backups to a cloud service or sth similar.

2025-04-03 15:20:18 UTC

If they have problems making backups, won't they also have problems remembering their password or keeping their e2e decryption key?
wouldn't that then mean that the history server side would be not completely secure so that you can perform a "password reset" / "restore account" service?
Or is the problem regular backups and it would be less of a problem on a server that keeps the messages so importing an old backup would redownload all messages.

tauri version source code is meanwhile available on https://github.com/deltachat/deltachat-desktop/tree/main/packages/target-tauri
not yet ready for daily use but basic functionality like sending, receiving messages and files and html emails work. notable things that are still in development are notifications, tray icon and webxdc.
Also at this point in time you need to compile from source as there are no "releases" yet.

well once you add the file storage provider in the settings then you can send larger files, like it could ask you when you attach a file that is bigger than 10mb.
A email hosted could also bring out a paid whitelabled version of delta chat that has a fileserver pre-set.
You could also share those presets (server address and your credentials) over qr code or special link with your friends.

there were ideas to support uploading to some kind of file server from dc directly. would not be that complex, maybe like video chat links you could add a fileserver instance.
I personally think chatmail shouldn't offer free file hosting. Storing large files is expensive and anonymous large file uploads could be attractive for criminals.
So should be bring your own fileserver/nextcloud whatever or buy storage.

2025-03-06 19:25:17 UTC

also nice idea, though the app is already really good.
What could be nice would be some interface where you can select some limited entities/lamps/devices to be controlled by a bot+webxdc and then it creates a group where you can add friends that stay over so while they are in the group they can just control the light and stuff in the guest room and they don't need to download extra apps?

delta chat should work fine for receiving transactional mail, though I don't have personal experience on using it for this on busy accounts.
The only big limit is that you can't easily set the subject yet from the ui when sending emails. https://support.delta.chat/t/subject-of-emails/264

In the future it could be nice to also integrate it further into home-assistant, so you can send a delta chat message in automations, like when a leak was detected or sth.
Could be nice to have this with the desktop UI, because it can make setting up bot accounts feels more tangible than just setting a email and password field.

So this is one way to host the browser edition in your local network. :homeassistant:

That is the restriction/feature of the #chatmail accounts, you can only sent encrypted messages. If you want to also send opportunistically[^1] encrypted emails to normal email accounts, then you need to use DC as email client for a normal email account.
https://delta.chat/chatmail
[^1]: this means it is not encrypted until you got the publickey of the other person, but you can still do the qr code scan to get guaranteed e2e encryption that doesn't easily fallback to plaintext

I don't know how it would work technically and if it is even possible technically. We can discuss this in detail in the forum if you want.
I could think of a button in the ui of delta chat desktop to nuke all user data, but it won't be able to remove everything, because as long as the app is running, like there are still cache files and logs from electron. I think the best way is still to use flatpak.

I don't know about how we would show a dialog "do you want to remove user data too?" on linux like uninstallers do on windows - AFAIK that's not common on linux. on linux there are package managers, on windows each program ships their own uninstall.exe program
If you want easy way to remove apps including user data on linux, then use flatpak:
flatpak uninstall --delete-data <app-name>

IMDb most of the time has a detailed "parents guide" which lists the kinds of "mature" things that are in a given show with examples:
For the Netflix Three body problem: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt13016388/parentalguide?ref_=tt_ov_pg#nudity
For Westworld:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0475784/parentalguide?ref_=tt_ov_pg
DDG bang is !imdb
Where/how can I watch the Chinese San Ti show with english or german subtitles? I haven't read the books yet, just watched the Netflix show and felt that it didn't fully reach its potential.
