I scattered native plant seeds on Sat Feb 21:
* Early goldenrod / Solidago juncea
* Virginia bluebells / Mertensia virginica
* Canadian wood betony / Pedicularis canadensis
I scraped at the leaves & dirt and tried to drop seeds into crevices/depressions so they would be protected, while still technically on the surface. I hear these seeds need light to grow and can't be buried deep.
Was this too late for cold stratification?

Yeah y'all are on to something, I'll definitely try recording some of these audiobooks myself. I just bought a nice vintage cassette recorder off Retrospekt, although I seem to have misplaced my nice microphones and might have to buy new ones if they don't turn up soon?
But it hurts my heart to imagine all of these once-loved books with cassettes going to a landfill, and I'm trying to figure out if any remain to be rescued, or if I'm too late.

When I was little, according to my parents I learned to read more or less by myself, by listening to books on cassette tape and reading along with a print copy.
What's the best place to find children's books that come with a (working) cassette tape? I'm also interested in books with audio CDs, but cassettes may be harder to find. I went to the Philly main branch library and they seem to have purged their music cassette tapes (to my horror).

#Philly, did you know that ICE killed one of our neighbors recently? Parady La was a Cambodian refugee living in Upper Darby, where he was detained on Jan 6. ICE apparently denied him medical care and water. He was found unresponsive in his cell, and taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Center City, where he was declared brain dead on Jan 8. He was 46 years old.

Has anyone tried making a PAPR or HEPA stroller? A few people have mentioned the concept but the only source I've found is this one paper: https://www.researchsquare.com/article/rs-2430680/v1
I'd love practical tips. Right now I can't go into stores with my baby because she can't mask, having the ability to wheel her inside would greatly expand what I can do while caring for my child. Also useful during wildfire smoke.

When the Nazis took over Germany, there was no civil war. There was not sufficient organized resistance to qualify as a civil war.
In the USA, there are a few possibilities:
* Somehow fair-ish elections are held that are capable of rejecting the Republicans; we get another shot at resolving issues through existing institutions (didn't go well last time)
* Mass uprisings result in a largely peaceful new government
* Civil war
* Total capitulation to fascism

My one beef with leaving wind-carried seedpods up, like goldenrod, asters, or white snakeroot, is it's impossible to walk through my garden without getting covered in seeds right now.
Presumably this will be solved by the wind carrying the seeds away eventually, or if I find the time to save the seeds, but until then garden maintenance is a challenge. I don't want to just ignore the seeds, because then they'll be stuck to my clothes and get vacuumed up or laundered in my house.

I'm installing a native plant pollinator garden for my neighbors, at the end of our street's back alley. Here's the first photo of my progress in implementing my sketched-out plan.
A key part of this design was choosing plants happy in the shade, since this is under large mature trees, and I've had some conflicting opinions on shade tolerance from different sources. I don't have much experience with shade gardening, since my yard is in full sun.

I can tell it's spring because the Unequal Cellophane Bees (Colletes inaequalis) are out and about in my neighbor's yard! Please enjoy this bee investigating a crocus. (Sadly these flowers are introduced and may not help this native bee, but this bee is determined to find out.)

My Gmail is unusable. It's all marketing emails, donation asks, and possible scams. It's necessary to log in to endless accounts that I've built up over decades, but that's exactly the problem, every service I've ever signed up for wants to send me automated emails.
I kind of just want to delete it, but I'd lose access to most of my online life, and if I ever order anything online again, the process will just start over again.
If I ignore it, I might miss a crucial #email alert.

Idea: a children's science show called "Replication Crisis", replicating experiments from across every branch of science. The show always begins with a theme song about why replicating scientific experiments is important, why it rarely happens due to capitalism etc., and how we can help.
In each episode, they choose an experiment that has never been formally replicated. They run the experiment, on camera as much as possible, then publish their results as open data for all.

According to the Bluesky FAQ, images are deleted immediately but text is deleted whenever they get around to it:

While the first is a bot that isn't official and won't interact, it's somehow a better experience than the apparently official Flipboard account that also won't interact (I suspect). I don't usually see Flipboard accounts engage with fedi, feels like there's room for improvement. But it may be more important that Flipboard accounts simply look worse aesthetically and in terms of info provided than RSS bots.

When I used Google Cardboard for the first time I genuinely thought we were close to having AR everywhere. It seemed like the tech already in our pockets was good enough that everyone could have a cheap version of AR, and that would be good enough to drive adoption and more expensive AR devices.
I bought a Google Daydream headset to play with it more, but I ran out of time, and before I could get back to AR experiments they'd cancelled Daydream before I could even open the box.

And to clarify, it's not the violence that drew my attention, although the details of vengeance make good stories.
What captivated me was the idea of a society that is actively hostile to the concentration of power, for good or for ill. So much of our modern problems seem intimately connected to concentration of power, and power has become so concentrated it seems impossible to undo, and so I value even a fatally flawed approach to preventing the creation of empires.

We went to our local Satellite Election Office in a strip mall, applied for mail-in ballots, filled the ballots out, then delivered them to a drop box right outside the door. It was very efficient and painless. Maggie said she liked it better than voting by mail at home, it was nice having experts there to support you through the process.

Hmm, I've been dismissing htmx because it was associated with the Hey/Basecamp asshole in my mind, but looking at the Wikipedia DHH isn't mentioned at all. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Htmx
I see that the software I was thinking of may actually be Hotwire: https://hotwired.dev/
Are there issues with the htmx community, or was I completely wrong about that?

I really want to attract the hummingbird clearwings! I saw one in my neighbor's yard this year so now I'm determined.
I planted a Monarda bradburiana / eastern beebalm recently so I'm hoping that'll help provide flowers for them next year :-)

I'm sick of only seeing introduced spring plants, crocuses, snowdrops, lesser celandine, etc. Biking last spring I saw acres of the same plant crowding out all others, one note where there once was a symphony.
I'm not sure I've seen any of these native plants in person, although I may not have looked very hard.

I enjoy #RSS, but I loathe feed readers that treat RSS feeds like email, where there is a list of unread articles. It gives me anxiety about leaving things undone (like Slack/Discord). I also don't like having to click through to each of the feeds.
Are there good RSS readers that display feeds as a river of posts (like Planet did), where there is no unread count (or it can be hidden permanently)? I recognize that frequent posters may drown out infrequent ones, but it's just more relaxing to me.

Huh, it's probably because I don't generally like eggplants, but I've never considered putting them in miso soup. But I also usually dislike potatoes, and we've been putting them in miso soup and I like the results, so maybe I should give eggplants a shot.

It was interesting how my phone camera couldn't decide what color the sky could be, with each picture coming out with a very different color scheme. It reminded me of how difficult it was to photograph the wildfire smoke previously. This photo was close to what my eyes saw, no filter.

Apparently Apple weather offers this, but I don't have any working Apple devices these days. On my Android phone, neither Google Weather nor Carrot Weather seem to provide humidity predictions at adequate resolution for me.
