but didn't the people of Maine choose him? AFAIK outsiders had opinions both ways but Dems there seemed to really like him and his campaign was not significantly affected by outsiders either way.
what's really frustrating is how Maine does RCV. if they had gone with FFV instead, we wouldn't have had such a divisive primary and they'd already have 3 other choices besides Collins and Platner on the ballot.

some streams include data that allows the app to know what songs were played. so #TuneFM keeps track of what songs were played, providing a link to Spotify. but imagine if instead the app also played songs directly from a musician's site via #canimus. if the app was not only a radio but a decentralized version of Spotify with DJs helping you build your music library? how it should be.

journalists (but many others too) want a network with huge democratic reach where everyone they care about can talk to each other. open networks facilitate this if we work to let people only see what they want (no ads or corp algos, mod for unwanted mentions) and no node can block user visibility for much of the network

looks like another @nprofile…28n3 to me. it's great to have better alternatives to Bandcamp but the future has to be a decentralized Spotify. the musicians have their own site and we listen in an app we choose and the money is transferred directly in amounts that work for both sides.

When you maximize the ability of humans to determine what info, ideas and art gets the most attention, I think you better society as fast as possible. I trust us collectively to properly manage the selfish incentives when the power is properly distributed. Fully connected while not allowing anyone to be harassed into silence, must be our goal.

I do not advocate a free for all approach. we should just focus on replies (unwanted tagging) instead of general content. when somebody is forcing themselves into others' attention. imo the fedi, in not having algos, is like browsing plus email. we generally support browsing to wherever you want or creating horrible websites, but support people in blocking spam. do that here. any limits you want on your server but also federate freely, unless they don't police harassment.

what you're arguing for will not achieve what you want. we'll just have separate networks misunderstanding and hating each other. the more difficult but more productive approach is to connect everyone as long as they do not intentionally bother each other. without algos, like on the web, people with strongly opposed views can coexist. the Nazi bar problem goes away.

In the video in the post I just boosted, @nprofile…4hqr says #Substack is now boiling the frog in a slow move from email towards lock-in. And of course they work with Nazis etc.
What we need is an effort between newsletter publishers like #Ghost #WordPress etc and reader apps like @nprofile…2vzg to build an ecosystem like podcasting. To make it smooth while remaining totally open. I'd argue for using #ActivityPub in addition to RSS to support boosts. Then we need decentralized money.

Fedi is frustrating because we're so awesome for the one thing almost nobody seems to care about here. Uncontrollable virality based purely on human agency.
Obviously there's no corporate ads or algos. But you can also find your people and hang out with them without being bothered using so many other technologies. Currently even bluesky has a ban hammer that will affect your reach on almost the entire ATmosphere.
We're using a hammer to dig ditches.

I get that but assuming bluesky doesn't get nuked, they will have a lot of power. and while other such entities could exist, they will all have a lot of power. and there won't be many of them due to cost.

I'd love to know what you think about the AT vs AP systems. I find the PDS idea awesome but hate the app view, that it seems designed to ensure a quite centralized experience. what the tech might enable vs how it will actually play out. AT developers seem to think they will run a service on the network and get rich while AP developers want to make a new thing possible and imagine endless implementations. maybe I'm too cynical.

I recommend everybody read Tribe by Sebastian Junger. It talks about how humans need purpose with others more than anything else. That we look back on times when we struggled together for a higher collective goal as the most rewarding times in our lives.

I know many don't care about growth but that's obviously deterred when potential newbies expect their ability to federate requires quite close agreement on politics etc. imagine trying to get people to move from AOL to the web if browsing was so tightly controlled. of course unwanted tagging should be policed harshly, but that's like email spam. rarely stumbling on stuff you don't like is life on the web.

I disagree. The only servers that should be blocked are those that fail to address their users who engage in unwanted tagging. That's harassment/abuse. It drives away users. I could support a list of servers somehow so verified.
But to go further than this is a kind of censorship of content allowed elsewhere on the web. Stuff we basically never stumble on while browsing. Without algos here, it will never be forced on us.

I believe he addressed these concerns under the sections titled "The Flywheel" and "The Gmail Problem". new apps still end up giving more users to bluesky. and the protocol is designed in such a way that centralization is encouraged.

Great article but I don't think we'll have a moment where #bluesky is sold or most people agree that they've gone evil. That's why just having an exit isn't enough. For that to work, most of the people you want to connect to have to agree quickly. Or when many start to leave, the original network can't turn off federation and lock-in the majority who haven't left yet.

The decentralized social media movement chose the path of reboot with #bluesky. Roll out a new protocol capable of decentralization but not decentralized yet...so normies would know where to join, search could be simple and there wouldn't be different implementations leading to stuff not working perfectly.

except that people who saw how ICE was planning to approach deportation saw this happening before the protests. how they were planning to do things that libertarians have said go too far forever. papers please etc. I was told that if the government ever tried this, we had the 2A and conservatives would stop them. that violence in the streets would be appropriate to save the country. instead we get non violent but aggressive resistance by moms and the big men say they deserve to get shot.

I guess we could say those sites are problems too but that reality is not something people usually complain about, except maybe when some wanted to scare us off the web in the 90s. it was a trade-off for letting people create their own sites. this moderation approach lets us share a social network with people we don't agree with 100%.

if you're using someone else's stuff, they should be able to say "no go away". but then the question becomes about the structure of the system. is it decentralized enough? where it isn't, there need to be rules about equal access but also respectful use.
AT and AP differ here because of the AT relays. without access to them, you're excluded. here on AP, you just find another server. assuming you can find one that interoperates with most of the network. so see above access and respect.

Can you elaborate? Obviously communism did fail but I don't think we've seen the kind of libertarianism he's advocating for. Variations of a mixed economy and representative democracy work pretty well.
And we've had plenty of fights between those generally on the left. Look at how Bernie was treated. Most advanced nations have universal health care but Dems don't even advocate it here. And we have poorly regulated immigration. Open borders is libertarian.

but there were some lefties speaking out against this at the time. what I keep trying to focus on here is what mechanisms would allow such voices of reason to better win the argument next time.
a more democratic media. #DemocracyOfReach less censorship but also deal with harassment.
a greater willingness to criticize your own side cause we're all more receptive to those voices.
less demanding that people agree with you 100% before you defend or promote them.

the [bad progressive person term] called me a [bad conservative person term] so I stopped the public conversation (that might have been useful to our civic understanding by those reading but never posting).
imo yea that's why we're here as a country and unable to elect a government that can fix anything. exactly what I might want if I was taking advantage of the current system.
I think Elon knows he is doing this. I think jerk/woke fedi are being "useful idiots".

isn't it common courtesy to not talk about people as one thing when you don't have the knowledge to claim that? when there is clear evidence that they are not that? if somebody endlessly does that, how should the subject respond?

please see what I've recently said about the Ukraine deal Trump is pushing and the conversation I had. that demonstrated objectivity and original thought imo. I'm sure you will say you didn't see that, yet feel no problem pronouncing about my failures.

we have never had a president be so shitty to people nor was he like this before he decided to run. and of course then no Dems etc responded to him in that way then like you keep complaining about.
he's playing a heel and it's working. the question for you imo is whether we should elect politicians who choose to play that role. I guess I'd even say yes if they were somehow fixing everything and making public dialogue no longer necessary.
