I do not advocate a free for all approach. we should just focus on replies (unwanted tagging) instead of general content. when somebody is forcing themselves into others' attention. imo the fedi, in not having algos, is like browsing plus email. we generally support browsing to wherever you want or creating horrible websites, but support people in blocking spam. do that here. any limits you want on your server but also federate freely, unless they don't police harassment.

I agree such Nazis exist. but we all have family members that are not like this but who many here would argue should not be allowed here. some of them may want to stop arming Israel now but were fine with Israeli policy a few years ago. they changed because they've now seen the destruction. they wouldn't have if they'd been pushed into echo chambers. see how kids changed on that issue thanks to TikTok and then how it was forced to sell. big fedi can be used to fight corporate media.

what you're arguing for will not achieve what you want. we'll just have separate networks misunderstanding and hating each other. the more difficult but more productive approach is to connect everyone as long as they do not intentionally bother each other. without algos, like on the web, people with strongly opposed views can coexist. the Nazi bar problem goes away.

In the video in the post I just boosted, @nprofile…4hqr says #Substack is now boiling the frog in a slow move from email towards lock-in. And of course they work with Nazis etc.
What we need is an effort between newsletter publishers like #Ghost #WordPress etc and reader apps like @nprofile…2vzg to build an ecosystem like podcasting. To make it smooth while remaining totally open. I'd argue for using #ActivityPub in addition to RSS to support boosts. Then we need decentralized money.

Fedi is frustrating because we're so awesome for the one thing almost nobody seems to care about here. Uncontrollable virality based purely on human agency.
Obviously there's no corporate ads or algos. But you can also find your people and hang out with them without being bothered using so many other technologies. Currently even bluesky has a ban hammer that will affect your reach on almost the entire ATmosphere.
We're using a hammer to dig ditches.

I get that but assuming bluesky doesn't get nuked, they will have a lot of power. and while other such entities could exist, they will all have a lot of power. and there won't be many of them due to cost.
do I have that right? can that be changed without losing the benefits of easy search and simplicity and the smoother experience people like about it?

I'd love to know what you think about the AT vs AP systems. I find the PDS idea awesome but hate the app view, that it seems designed to ensure a quite centralized experience. what the tech might enable vs how it will actually play out. AT developers seem to think they will run a service on the network and get rich while AP developers want to make a new thing possible and imagine endless implementations. maybe I'm too cynical.

I recommend everybody read Tribe by Sebastian Junger. It talks about how humans need purpose with others more than anything else. That we look back on times when we struggled together for a higher collective goal as the most rewarding times in our lives.

maybe you're not completely serious, but this kind of thing is an issue here. I know many don't care about growth but that's obviously deterred when potential newbies expect their ability to federate requires quite close agreement on politics etc. imagine trying to get people to move from AOL to the web if browsing was so tightly controlled. of course unwanted tagging should be policed harshly, but that's like email spam. rarely stumbling on stuff you don't like is life on the web.

I disagree. The only servers that should be blocked are those that fail to address their users who engage in unwanted tagging. That's harassment/abuse. It drives away users. I could support a list of servers somehow so verified.
But to go further than this is a kind of censorship of content allowed elsewhere on the web. Stuff we basically never stumble on while browsing. Without algos here, it will never be forced on us.
I can easily see posts critical of Israel called antisemitic.

I believe he addressed these concerns under the sections titled "The Flywheel" and "The Gmail Problem". new apps still end up giving more users to bluesky. and the protocol is designed in such a way that centralization is encouraged.
under "The Chokepoints", he acknowledges you're correct ala blacksky. but that's a huge ask. but they're not fully independent yet and it's hard to believe most would ever be happy with the alts' functionality if bluesky went full adversary re them.

Great article but I don't think we'll have a moment where #bluesky is sold or most people agree that they've gone evil. That's why just having an exit isn't enough. For that to work, most of the people you want to connect to have to agree quickly. Or when many start to leave, the original network can't turn off federation and lock-in the majority who haven't left yet.
The good people at BS could end this fear by making clear their monetization plans today.

The decentralized social media movement chose the path of reboot with #bluesky. Roll out a new protocol capable of decentralization but not decentralized yet...so normies would know where to join, search could be simple and there wouldn't be different implementations leading to stuff not working perfectly.
But with more stuff being built on #ATproto, that honeymoon is ending. It's going to have the same problems that the fedi does.

except that people who saw how ICE was planning to approach deportation saw this happening before the protests. how they were planning to do things that libertarians have said go too far forever. papers please etc. I was told that if the government ever tried this, we had the 2A and conservatives would stop them. that violence in the streets would be appropriate to save the country. instead we get non violent but aggressive resistance by moms and the big men say they deserve to get shot.

I guess we could say those sites are problems too but that reality is not something people usually complain about, except maybe when some wanted to scare us off the web in the 90s. it was a trade-off for letting people create their own sites. this moderation approach lets us share a social network with people we don't agree with 100%.

if you're using someone else's stuff, they should be able to say "no go away". but then the question becomes about the structure of the system. is it decentralized enough? where it isn't, there need to be rules about equal access but also respectful use.
AT and AP differ here because of the AT relays. without access to them, you're excluded. here on AP, you just find another server. assuming you can find one that interoperates with most of the network. so see above access and respect.

couldn't we have something like versions of Linux for OTT devices and cars that were managed by a consortium of interested parties that don't want to be dictated to by Google and Apple? they could be made to work great with whatever mobile device it was talking to. enough participants and they'd have to deal. and they could go to court or lobby the government.

Can you elaborate? Obviously communism did fail but I don't think we've seen the kind of libertarianism he's advocating for. Variations of a mixed economy and representative democracy work pretty well.
And we've had plenty of fights between those generally on the left. Look at how Bernie was treated. Most advanced nations have universal health care but Dems don't even advocate it here. And we have poorly regulated immigration. Open borders is libertarian.

I was providing questions one could ask oneself before posting something to determine whether it is "abuse".
they will not provide perfect answers, but all of human interaction is gray. as you said, we're different. but we do this offline all the time.
my experience is that most people online have no problem doing this most of the time. for some, they fail when they are triggered. it only seems to be an "all the time problem" for edgelords and those who they entertain.

I get why people want to limit replies for themselves and people they like, but do they want that for the people they want to criticize? Imagine cruel, misleading posts with nothing but endless approving replies beneath them. #SocialWeb
What we should want is everything allowed except for abuse. To encourage healthy dialogue, not bubbles.

I understand that #ATproto should be for everyone, but decentralization means you don't have to allow everyone on your server. The admin can run their own and everyone can decide how to deal with that. The company doesn't need to make these decisions. She knows this.

Don't give them an account and pay those costs. Let them run their own servers and every other server decide how to interact with them. It's called decentralization. What Jay said they were already doing on CNN during the rollout but now still says is almost done. #ActivityPub was available.

The podcasters who hate the mainstream media build their shows mostly off reporting done by those same outlets. While they obsess when the #M5M gets something wrong, the vast majority of their commentary accepts it as fact, so that they can use it to complain about what lefties and Dem politicians are doing. But they couldn't even do that if they required the news be originally from sources they trusted. They don't exist.
Shouldn't they then want to build better news organizations?

give me the peace prize cause maybe I told the serial killer that unless he stopped killing people so often, I'd stop giving him the bullets and wouldn't defend him in court. so what if I said he could still decide what horrible conditions all his potential victims live under. I mean the previous resident of my house wouldn't even do that, right?
and just ignore all the bullets I'm selling to everybody else and the rando boats I blow up.

don't you then need to appeal to a higher authority like the UN? the same entity that Israel claims gave it the legal right to exist. the US basically pretends to serve that role. somehow we've let this go on forever without that happening.

Most of the money that gets donated to campaigns, gets spent on advertising. Getting people off media distribution systems with ads and instead funding the work directly, would do so much to fix our political process.
It's a huge part of why I want the #SocialWeb and #WebMonetization to win.
