well, thats why my auth relays send an auth challenge upon connect. but clients rudely ignore that and insist on being the first to send a message (like an event or req). so, i suppose, clients are what also created this pattern so that now you feel like you have to auth with random key "just to get a response"? 🤔

i kindof always thought clients should do this type of thing, for things like app settings.. that way they can manage their internal keys for stuff that doesn't need be signed by the 'main key'. so it's an interesting idea to me generally.. it seems very difficult to do complicated nostr stuff when the key is accessed thousands of times a second (and we have to pretend we approved all of it, and signers choke if we don't).
not sure if this is what luxas is doing, but it reminded me of the idea.

this seems cool, im just curious, does this mean you save these ephemeral nsecs somewhere so the client can use them later or? (ie, i assume they must be stored in the client local db, or.. i suppose in a nostr encrypted event for multi device)

well, you can look at the relays and see who. that's who. so don't dm people that have dirty relays in their list, or use dirty clients that don't respect the code. run your own relay or find someone who has ethics that does and then get your friends on there and your clients to not be stupid.
in my clients, if you have some dirty relay, yeah I'm gonna treat DMs with you like it's a nostr kind 1.
incremental improvements, ratchet that shit to the max ratchet. or just complain and give up. that's your choices.

nip17 is great and if you trust your client to use a good set of relays with your friends it lowers the blast radius of your messages immensely.. (ideally to only relays that protect via nip42 auth, and even more ideally that one of your friends runs, and even even more ideally with deletion support #soon).

@npub107j…ncxg couple things about grimoire, that maybe I'm just too basic of a spell caster, or maybe I'm weird but here's my jam. I like to browse the feeds, and jump into them on a particular note and comment. This flow seems hard on grimore, typically I click a note, it shows the parent note, or a 'thread view' and I get lost.. (Can't click the actual comment note from the basic outbox spell). Same with notifications, I'd like to zoom it into the particular comment I've clicked, and respond directly to/below it.
Are these use cases making any sense? It's pretty much the main way I use nostr, I love to para-troop into comments and reply. Reactions and zaps, those are a far second for me.

Oh, yeah good questions.. I was kind-of just doing a more human type tagging, like tagging the relays I know about that are "good for Directory" purpose or etc, even if I don't run them, just to help discovery.. I also really dislike the wording on nip11 and clients saying "payment required" vs "payments accepted". Same for auth, "auth required" vs. "auth capable". We've evolved so far past nip11 and relays being just one single dumb thing. The relay may accept payment, but that does not mean it requires it to use.
So yeah, if you're automating, it might take some kind of testing of the relay capabilities, or if you have nip86 access you can pull allowedkinds that way (but that requires the access which is usually only owners and mods).
I don't really know how you'd do this for random relays.. That's why relays should all have their own monitors, where the operator can at least seed some of this info.. (or fix/augment their nip11s)

Well, as long as the app is satisfied with blanket reject for all nip44 encrypt/decrypt, I can settle for that. Wisp seems to function ok in this mode (eg. DMs turned off). Unsure about amethyst. Curious what @Vitor Pamplona thinks. Are we too cypherpunk?

i worry that @greenart7c3 needs some help with manual amber.. from you guys. I see utxo has given up already, supporting it (maybe jokingly, but users told to accept all). And amethyst still is broken as well. Mostly when using DMs is what I see. I really think this is important and I love seeing what I'm signing and approve for time window etc.. Is this an unsolvable problem because of android architecture or is it just that more integration testing and fixing is required?

It's also possible that if you are on a slow connection, amethyst will starve your devices connection pool (not related to the relay). I noticed this when testing amethyst on a slow connection it could not send a message to save it's life, due to how much connection cycling it was doing in the background. Then I used a faster connection and this problem went away.
So, maybe try other clients.. See if the relay still has problems responding (like jumble or..?)

in this case, as with anytime i whine about something.. i have thought hard to come up with a possible solution. just have to build it. giving up and just showing off all our personal data to everyone in the world because in 7 years encryption is ded and everything is powned by nextclaude, i will go ahead and say, i like my solution better.
attempting to close glaring holes in privacy, it gives us time to adapt to the collapse, extend the curve, vs. collapse immediately. an accelerationist would say, spend that time on dealing with the aftermath of the collapse instead, that is fair, except i do not want to be at the frontlines of the collapse as fodder.
