I think Shanghai has enough curlicue corners that some recharges are automatic, and that back straight is so long that no battery will last the whole way. Some of it could be e.g. lift-coast strategy, but there's still room for cars to be just mechanically faster around corners.
Mercedes has also been complaining about over- and understeer, so they probably traded away some downforce to be faster on the straights. Which used to be Ferrari's whole thing!

Looks like the qualifying template for the early part of the season is going to be:
Q1: both Williams, both Astons, both Cadillacs out
Q2: 6 out of 8 of (Alpine, Audi, Racing Bulls, Haas) out
Q3: Both Mercedes, both Ferraris, both McLarens, then a jumble of Red Bulls and the lucky qualifiers
Guess we’ll see what upgrade season has in store.

Watching the qualifying replay. They popped up a graphic showing Leclerc was over half a second faster in low-speed corners than Russell. Which is a shock, because for several years Ferrari management was adamant that CAR GO FAST, even when being the fastest on the straights hamstrung them in races. So maybe something there has changed for the better.

The most hilarious thing about this season is that #LFC are 3 points away from being 3rd on points, and play the 3 teams ahead of them (MUN, CHE, AVL) back-to-back-to-back in the first half of May.
Basically the whole season depends on whether or not they can get good in 2 months. (And also if they can avoid tripping over themselves against mid/bottom-table opponents.)
As bad as they are, I actually kind of like their odds.
