No. There is no logical reason that you should have to set it up once for each device once the devices share an identity. I used non-networking examples to show what the ideal experience is because our networking sucks. IP is fine, but everything downstream of that is suspect because things keep gravitating back into silos because of spam.
The only resilient form of communication is in person conversation. So far. We can and must be able to piggy-back off that. Once we stop accepting that networking has to suck, we can start building applications that ordinary people can use.

It isn't self-hosting that is the problem. It is the setup and network layer.
Do you have complaints about self-hosting solitaire or minesweeper? Of course not! They install without configuration and just work.
I'd counter with give me a protocol that doesn't require configuration of any apps that use it.
I don't want to pay for hosted services, not out of unwillingness to pay, but because that means I have configure something. Try telling people that they can have a great video-editing program and here are 14 companies they can pay to use it each with slightly different versions and pros and cons, but at least they are mostly interoperable.

We all want filters. I do don't want to have to wade through endless spam on every platform.
We also don't want kids being taught every conceivable idea. We are only interested in teaching the true. So we have to censor.
I agree with the general point, however, who should have the power to censor? Basically just parents. But in reality any organization that people willingly submit to as a teaching authority also has that power. If I attend a university, I will try to chose one that will filter the crap for me. If I attend church I expect them to censor false doctrine from the pulpit.
I did not however submit to the government as a teaching authority. I use them as a regulatory authority. I expect them to limit what a person might do rather than what a person might hear or say.

Absolutely yes. If you need more storage or compute for your enterprise you can put a beefy machine on your network and just add it to the company pool.
It will be important to be able to make some tweaks to the company wide VM like making sure N copies of the Data exist.

My idea is to build a wasm based VM with a distributed filesystem. Then over time add distributed io and compute. Imagine having your code editor available and running on all your devices without having to sync your code. Just move from laptop to desktop and pick up where you left off. The VM even moves the running code to the most effective core across all your machines.
That way compiling from your phone would automatically use your desktop etc.
It gets even more powerful if you have trusted contacts with mutual resource sharing agreements. They can act as an off-site back up as well as giving everyone with enough friends access to supercomputer like performance for highly parallel (and not too sensitive) workloads. Blender rendering for the masses!

There is simply no way to do this. Even if you control for weight and muscle mass men are far stronger. There is some overlap in the distributions but the peaks for various types of strength are multiple standard deviations apart.
We use the language "male and female" because it is useful and descriptive. Pretending they are arbitrary categories is intentional stupidity.
It might be interesting to make some sport with a really complicated set of rules that levels the playing field, but I doubt many athletes would want to play it.
Sports may develop complex rules but they usually have easy to understand objectives. Jump far, jump high, arrive first etc.

I've had mine for 6 years. The speakers are terrible, but other than that it will probably last me another 10 years. Try playing some video games though just to see if it overheats. Tuxkart is a good candidate. I had to repaste my CPU because they over pasted it at the factory and it overheated easily. A little liquid metal paste and I can game on it now. Not that I do, but I could if I wanted.

Yes. My kids have a very small radius because My wife and I are introverts. In nearly 8 years of living in this town we have made 0 close friends. We don't know the people in the next house much less whoever lives by the park.
In my defense all the neighbors that I did know recently moved away. But they were all retired. We accidentally moved to a neighborhood with nearly no kids.

Very few people actually want to live far away from everyone. Most want to live in a tightknit community. It doesn't matter if it is a country hamlet or an multi-tenent building in the middle of a huge city. It just has to be tranquil, have a sense of community, and have the freedom to make it beautiful.
But today's cities are loud, lonely, dangerous, and restrictive. Fix that and people will stop running away.

Born in 1921 Ken was more American than a Norman Rockwell painting. As an army stenographer he invaded Italy with a mechanical typewriter. He and his late wife Marie shouldered much of the blame for the baby boom with 8 children, 39 grandchildren, and approximately 70 great-grandchildren (I've lost count).
It was a good run, with baseball games, tennis matches, canoe trips, Automobile manufacturing (GM), sailing, camping, building everything from bunk-beds to house for his children, and of course daily mass and trips to Big Boy for brunch.

Ok, intervention time. Money buys you time with your computer.
A €2000 computer gets you all the no compromise parts. There are no unintentional bottlenecks. With all that head-room above current application demands they can last a decade.
€1200 gets you a great computer with a bit less oomph, It is just lower amounts of quality parts, less ram, less storage, fewer cores. it will run all the software you want, just don't expect too much out of it 5 years on.
€500 gets you a computer that runs today's software for now, but now corners are definitely getting cut. You are getting truly slower, cheaper parts. It is not going to be amazing today and you'll be back to tolerating your computer rather than using it in a few years.
The good news is that sales exist. Lenovo will sell you that €2300 unit for €1600 on occasion. Maybe get last year's top model for a steal. Their promotion emails are worth a subscription.

I still want a company to make a car that can be modified like a video game. It'd probably have to be electric, but that's my preference anyway. Start with a civic equivalent. Swap in a bigger motor, better battery, power electronics. Customized software, drop in suspension upgrades etc. completely modular car.

In the end we are all gardeners.
Once every problem is solved all that is left is growing, tending, and being. Either what we build brings us closer to Eden or it doesn't. Social media is mixed. It allows ideas to grow and flourish, but it can also distract us from putting our toes in the dirt and being present to those present.
I still wrestle with what the final form of technology would look like given a billion years of evolution. I don't know what it would do, but I know that it would do it invisibly, evident only in that we'd have made all the word a garden.

Strong doesn't mean large. I just mean has the ability to act decisively on behalf of its constituents. But yes. They will always corrupt. Positions of power rarely attract good people. My position is that governments cannot be kept out since they have strategic advantages, so how do we work with them while they still hold to some ideals? How do we help them maintain those ideals for as long as possible? And how do we throw off the yoke when they become despotic?

Yes, but so is not having a state. We need to be able to iterate. Personally I'd like to try limiting the size of the corpus of law. The consistion should say something like all laws on the books must fit within 10kB zipped, and 100kB unzipped and be comprehensible to a median 10th grader.
That at least limits how invasive a government can be. You'd need some additional protections so the law can't be "we can do what we want."

I don't have a solution to states becoming tyrannical. Things that exist for other purposes eventually evolve to behave in a way that is self-serving. This is why political parties don't actually make political progress. All the power of the party eventually gets spent maintaining the power of the party. Any party that doesn't play that game falls out of power and disappears.
Same with unions. They now exist to maintain the union and any benefit they give to workers is only a side-effect of maintaining power.
This happens with species as well they exist to maintain their lineage. Only humans have gone through enough game theory to develop altruism as the next tier of evolutionary advantage. That step is still incomplete. Governments as a higher layer organism are still behaving like brutes. I am not sure how long it will take for states to evolve a sense of selflessness. Maybe a million years? Until then we need to iterate.
The trouble is that earth is only big enough for a few hundred governments, they become old and brutish and people suffer under their thumbs. To the stars!

No one needs to be governed as long as all their neighbors are "decent" which I think means "don't behave in a way that impinges on what I want" But that is never the case. Most often decent enough people want to have the freedom to behave in ways that make it impossible for other people to behave in the same way. For instance if everyone wanted to subsistence hunt, we'd run out of game.
The problem isn't that governments exist it is that they don't die. Colonies of cells collaborating to make a human do better than single cells, but eventually things go haywire and the human dies. This is super important to allow the next generation to try to do better. We need more space for people to try new ideas without being smothered by 200 years of law.

Consenting always has the upper hand over non-consent because it allows collaboration on specific initiatives that might not materially benefit all collaborators. I.E. they overpower the non-consenters. The intervention required scales with how broad the coverage of law is and how contrary to nature the laws are. For a authoritarian beauacracy you can't tolerate any dissent, so your population has to eat itself, for a permissive government dissenters can participate without falling afoul of the law as long as the law doesn't cover they cases where they dissent. But if they do not consent to governance in a way that runs contrary to law they will get locked up.
You can't just opt out. The only way that works is in a complete anarchy, which is an unstable situation. As soon as two people agree to government they will get the upper hand.

You could specify a nested wireguard protocol to allow connections through existing wireguard tunnels. Then you can do something like TOR eventually. I wouldn't do it straight away, I'd just limited the packet size to allow for encapsulation without fragmentation.

Every client being a relay gets people a way to communicate with close contacts even if all the big relays conspire against them or become paid only. I wouldn't make them wide open by default. Standard relays still make sense even if they only act as hole-punch or turn servers.
The very basic idea is that if you aren't hosting your own data, it's not really your data. You don't, however, want to ask ordinary people to set up servers. Instead you have their clients collaborate on where to store data. Ordinary people would just know that they have limited storage depending on the devices they've pooled.
In response to wireguard not working in browsers. It should. I would lean toward making a Nostr browser like notedeck that @nprofile…j9m5 is working on. It doesn't have to start out as complex as a full browser. But if it does all the network and protocol layer stuff, then developers can just target something like a webassembly VM that has some extra functionality exposed like a render target.
Then applications can just be another event type.

This is hilarious, because if you do all the alternatives you basically get what I have wanted for years. I wouldn't mind the breakage at all. I'd just join the new thing.
The only other changes I'd add would be wireguard instead of web sockets and every client is a relay, but not all relays are clients.
