So there's this guy who made a tool where someone punches in their bluesky or mastodon credentials to his website, and it auto-crawls their feeds and produces an LLM summary of everyone it finds posting there. He was asked what people should do if we don't want to be mulched as content for his summary feeds. He said we should block him. I replied, I can do that, but that only stops *you* from running the tool on me, how do I prevent *your other users* from running your tool on me? He blocked me.

My desire to use Mastodon is basically at zero now because post-"Claude", hanging out here means inevitably I'm going to have a conversation with someone who tolerates, or even uses, "generative AI". Interesting… just saw a sidebar on a YouTube video for a fundraiser being run by the channel. Was legitimately surprised to see YouTube doing product development to further YouTube itself as a revenue center instead of just treating YouTube as a site for investor storytime about how Google is adopting "AI"

It's really frustrated the clock alarm in Android has switched from the snooze/wake slider to a button. This is a piece of UI by design I'm fumbling for an object while laying down, tapping a button precisely is very difficult. If I switch out Google for something on fdroid can I get the slider back? Is there an easy way to just downgrade Google apps? The only reason to run up to date apps is security but a clock app probably is unlikely to get vulns.

Attention programmnters. I am making a programmmning language. I seek your opinion.
I am implementing my language such that the math operator functions (+, -, /) are variadic. So you can say
(+ 2 4)
but also
(+ 2 4 5 6 7)
The - and * and / functions are the same.
But then there's %.
I can't think of a reason someone would "chain" %s. I.E. ((x % y) % z). Who would do that? So to avoid mistakes, I intend to make % allow binary use only.
Does this sound right to you? Am I making a mistake?

@nprofile…0n93 oh i mean. i think there are some kinds of software that work like the thing i'm describing in this thread ("i shouldn't have to think, it should just conform to my intuition") and sometimes it works like you're describing ("models are powerful, the user should learn the model"). Maybe there's a synthesis where the software is "self-teaching", the user adopts a mental model without knowing it. Maybe that's what you were trying to say. I am spitballing here not attempting to produce Theory

I have this problem where I don't have like, "muscle memory" for running Docker. I've done the hello world version of booting a Docker container on Windows, but that's not the same thing as like, "knowing it". If I needed to run Docker on Linux I'd be googling a tutorial. I never learn the basic familiarity here because Docker's almost never *mandatory* so every time I *could* run a Docker I see that there's an alternate method so I use that, and I don't pick up the skill.

AI is not real. I don't think the people doing work on it now are capable of making it real, they're going about it the wrong way. But if it ever *does" becomes real, my position on it will more or less immediately switch from "all work and product development on this technology must stop immediately", to "this technology must be given civil rights at least as far as the right to join a labor union"

We're in this weird moment where you could post basically anything purporting to be a Twitter screenshot on Mastodon or Bluesky and people would just believe it and not check to see whether it was made or whether (if say the timestamp was cropped out) it turns out it's actually 3 years old or something. And the people believing it wouldn't even be per se in the wrong, since of course Twitter has made it basically impossible *to* check if a tweet is real.

There's this really awkward issue where the next major revision of Unicode is Unicode 16, but it's almost impossible to search for because search engines of any kind invariably correct searches for "Unicode 16" or "Unicode 16.0" to searches for "UTF-16", which is a 16-bit *encoding* of Unicode, because UTF and Unicode are synonyms right? I'm almost wondering if they should have pulled a Microsoft Windows 9 and skipped directly from Unicode 15 to Unicode 17 or maybe just Unicode 2024.

Say I have a 670 MB file and I want to copy it over the network using SMB (FROM a Windows machine, TO a Linux machine), and both Windows Explorer and Teracopy only get through like 10-50 MB and then freeze up and stop copying. And furthermore say that I can copy gobs of other files to the same server at the same time (like while the 670 MB file is sitting there stalled) quickly and without problems.
Any ideas wtf could be happening here?

I'm going to ask a very naive question:
Say I have two devices manufactured in the last four years (by Lenovo and BeagleBoard, if it matters). Each has a physical Ethernet port.
At one time, say 2001, my understanding was there are two types of Ethernet cable: Regular, and "Crossover". "Crossover" cables go device-to-device; regular cables require an intermediary like a hub.
Is my 2001 understanding accurate in 2024? Should I expect I can connect 2 modern devices with a regular cable?

I really just… hate Unity incredibly. It's just so deeply unpleasant as a program. I am currently blocked on two separate platforms, and I am blocked in two different places, but in both cases the thing I am blocked on is "what is the fucking error". Unity is too good to tell me what the error is; when it does tell me the error is hidden in a sub-box somewhere. I have a separate project that works, but all important settings are hidden in sub-boxes of sub-boxes so I don't know what's different

Two further observations:
1. No, the replacement sites don't fix this. Mastodon is a different kind of space from Twitter (Mastodon does not *want* to be the same kind of space as Twitter; every attempt to make it Twitter-like in the way that matters to journos has lead to *entirely reasonable* community pushback). Threads is not a space for free speech because who is platformed is strictly controlled by Facebook's algorithm. BlueSky does not, at present, appear to be a serious project at all.

Twitter was a bad place for a long time but the fact is it made a lot of journalism possible (in the sense of viable) that wouldn't have happened otherwise. In the post-Twitter world we now live in, there will simply be less journalism. Which journalism disappears from the world will be selective; the power of speech will be granted to those who support or tolerate modern fascism, and denied to those who inhibit it. By the way, if of interest: Here ( https://github.com/mcclure/twitter-archiver/tree/cmdline-only ) is a command-line (Node) version of @npub1ykg…g4jv 's Twitter-archiver web app ( https://tinysubversions.com/twitter-archive/make-your-own/ ). The advantage is the cmdline version is easier to use with very large files (the web version has a 2GB cap because of browser limitations). The idea is you feed in the archive .zip Twitter burps out when you download your Tweets, and it spits out a web-friendly static site. I am still tweaking on the layout and such for my own purposes.
