Both people here have limited access to health care, very little money, and extreme distrust of psychology and psychiatry. One seems to have beliefs that verge on delusional, and the other one enables those beliefs. I asked for this specifically because I think it will at least provide some useful perspectives and maybe a strategy or two for things like setting boundaries. I don't take my choice of language lightly, so if I'm missing something here that's harmful, please let me know.

So the latest on my local data center fight: the people behind it have belatedly hired someone to do PR for them and a local lawyer. Suddenly, it has always been a hydroponics research project with the server racks just an alternate method of providing the heat needed for indoor growing during the winter. Also, where before they were just "representatives" of Eco Yotta Inc, now they're the actual owners. And gosh maybe they might just move to the town if it all works out! And nevermind about them being able to purchase a multimillion dollar piece of real estate, they drive a Honda so clearly they're not THAT rich! Oh and also neither of them have any expertise in hydroponics but the wife used to run a day care center, so they're also thinking about starting some kind of childcare/child development tracking app.

"We’re familiar with redlining. The real estate industry, big banks, and the federal government collaborated on home valuation schema that tethered race to risk, denied mortgages to millions of Black and brown people, and ensured most would be trapped in a captive housing market as tenants. But Ansfield’s book studies a later wave and a novel form of extractive abandonment: insurance “brownlining.” After riots erupted in almost 2,000 cities and towns in the late 1960s, Ansfield writes, “insurance personnel were, in a real sense, capitalism’s first responders,” working in an industry that aimed to convert “black resistance … into dollars and cents.” Surveying the damage, many insurance companies declared Black neighborhoods uninsurable. Riots had forced a racial reckoning—and inspired a racial panic. The federal government cut a deal with the insurance industry that reflected both: In exchange for a government backstop of reinsurance, companies would have to offer property owners in “riot-prone” areas access to Fair Access to Insurance Requirements, or FAIR, insurance plans. But these were “subprime” insurance plans—“‘back of the bus’ insurance,” in the words of one critic. They allowed insurers to charge higher monthly premiums for inferior coverage, and their exorbitant cost meant that generally only white absentee landlords could afford them. Far from a “remedy” for racist harms, FAIR plans turned racist fears into market logic.
Landlords often put this logic to work. Ansfield relates the story of Imre Oberlander and Yishai Webber, who in 1975 were among the first landlords indicted for arson conspiracy in the Bronx. When the duo were pulled over because of a broken taillight, officers discovered a pair of Hasidic men in blackface—along with two explosive devices. Ansfield suspects that to Oberlander and Webber, blackface must have seemed like its own “form of insurance.” Racism provided the cover, but FAIR plans had laid the economic kindling. One study published by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago suggests that in New York state, FAIR plans led to 13,000 excess fires in a single year."

The Guardian once again exposing why people are wary of their journalism when it comes to trans people. This article (archived link, no paywall) about female intersex athletes being over-represented starts out saying that these athletes "went through male puberty". These, to be clear, are people who have breasts and vaginas and were assigned female at birth. People who identify as girls and women and always have. So this is a bit niche even for enviro-nuts like me but if you're down to sign petitions, this one could use it. Tell SUNY ESF to drop their partnership with the dangerous, unproven, and disrespectful "Darling 58" genetically modified chestnut tree makers SilvaBio.
If you read "The Overstory," you may be familiar with the tale of chestnut trees in North America: afflicted by an invasive blight and then prematurely chopped down by panicking white people, to the extent that chestnut trees almost went extinct. Now this private company has been working with ESF to develop blight-resistant trees, but even though their results are poor, and even though indigenous communities of the northeast, such as the Onondaga Nation, have been urging a traditional breeding approach, and even though SilvaBio's stated intent to sell the trees for profit is in conflict with ESF's mission for "all people... to propagate them for personal or restoration use," ESF has been sticking with SilvaBio.

Back at the end of March, the FBI kidnapped a Chinese academic couple, Xiaofeng Wang and his wife Nianli Ma. Apparently they're now free, but Indiana University, which employed them both, shamefully fired both of them without any process or explanation, and they were never charged with any crimes. Now they're seeking to unseal the warrant that was used to justify the raid on their house and their detention.
Another thing I learned from looking this up: the "China Initiative" which was basically a quota for the FBI to file cases against people linked to China somehow. Trump started it and Biden took two years to end it. This episode has people thinking it's back.

Hey so I don't know how many people might be seeking a relatively low-paid job* at a very inclusive library in a mildly welcoming town, but my local library is expanding its physical premises and is now also hiring a new library clerk. This position is full time, doesn't require advanced degrees, and comes with good benefits and, if it's like my civil service job, also comes with a guaranteed pay raise of 2-3% every year.

It's not unusual to read an academic paper that concludes "more research is needed," but it is unusual for academic writers to conclude "more research is needed on the subject of how to change the politics of this world!"
"Finally, the question of politics emerges as an important research frontier. Whereas science is advancing on the questions of desired pathways, provisioning systems, and policies for a post-growth economy, we still know little about the politics that could make post-growth transitions possible in reality. A particular blind spot concerns geopolitical relations, and how changes in international governance and world orders open up, or close down, opportunities for post-growth and sovereign development."

Growth as a goal for societies is basically brand new.

"Decoupling"? It's possible but extremely unlikely (authors being politic here); "the post-growth field suggests taking a precautionary approach, given the historical record and the rapid narrowing of the window to prevent ecological breakdown. Post-growth, it should be emphasised, does not state that decoupling economic activity from emissions and getting to net zero emissions is impossible, just that it is made harder by economic growth. For energy and material use, which can only be reduced and never brought to zero, the necessary reductions are easier to achieve with post-growth."

Degrowth therefore emphasises the need for a planned, democratic transformation of the economic system to drastically reduce ecological impact and inequality and improve wellbeing. Degrowth, similarly to steady-state economics, regards a lower GDP as a probable outcome of efforts to substantially reduce resource use.
