RE: https://mastodon.social/@arstechnica/116391465906847978
Excellent article. It seems oil is not the undifferentiated commodity i had thought of it as. The US is the world’s largest producer of oil, it’s true. But we export some of that while also importing oil from overseas. Because the US produces an excess of “light, sweet” crude oil while many of our refineries have long been configured to process “heavy, sour” crude.
“‘An important part of our exports and imports are sort of swaps of higher-quality crude to buy lower-quality crude,’ Gross said. That means the United States, despite its high production, is fully integrated into a global market in upheaval.”

Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield (@agdanrayfield.bsky.social) wrote on Bluesky at 8:06 PM, 8 Jan 2026
BREAKING NEWS: AG Rayfield Announces Investigation Into Shooting Involving Federal Agents in Portland
"We have been clear about our concerns with excessive use of force by federal agents in Portland and nationally. We have also been clear about our intent to investigate circumstances involving federal agents to ensure they are accountable to acting within the scope of their official duties. Today's incident only heightens the need for transparency and accountability. Our office will take every step necessary to ensure that the rights and security of Oregonians are protected."
The Oregon DOJ is opening a formal investigation into an incident in Portland in which two people were shot and injured during an encounter with federal agents. The investigation will look into whether any federal officer acted outside the scope of their lawful authority and will include witness interviews, video evidence, and other relevant materials. If evidence of criminal conduct is found, cases may be referred to the Multnomah County District Attorney for potential prosecution.

Parties on the left(ish) and right in Britain have had a consistent hostility to civil liberties. As Alan Moore wrote, "England prevails!"
"As of now, if you live in Britain, support Palestine Action, and don’t want to get charged with a terrorism offence, you have two choices: Pretend you experienced a dramatic epiphany just as the clock struck midnight on July 5 and realized that nothing, not even genocide, excuses damaging the property of an Israeli arms firm, or choose your words very carefully. It’s been quite surreal to receive texts from friends asking questions like, Do you think I can get away with sharing this photo of an elderly woman being arrested at a protest and describing her as “brave”? The law is so ambiguous that these questions can rarely be answered with any certainty, and different lawyers will often tell you different things. "

The testers abraded a patch of skin with plastic pot scrubber then applied the capsicum directly.
Then, they administered the mystery substance on the burning. Neither I, nor the direct testers knew what it was. There was just a number on an otherwise unlabeled bottle. Only the experiment administrators had the key to which bottle contained what. That's the definition of double-blind.
Subjects rated pain on a 1-10 scale before the antidote-candidate was applied, then at intervals afterward. The Black Cross Healthcare Collective did this all summer, trying various substances.

2025-06-08 04:11:01 UTC

PEPPER SPRAY PAIN RELIEF
I was a volunteer subject in these randomized, double-blind trials to find a treatment for pepper spray discomfort. The only thing found to be better than water was a 1:1 solution of water and liquid antacid — aluminum hydroxide or magnesium hydroxide-based, such as Maalox or Mylanta. Use plain or mint, but a physician and street medic friend asked me to stress that *mint* is best.
“The Black Cross Healthcare Collective was a group of healthcare workers who lived in Portland, Oregon. They formed after the WTO protests of 1999, after seeing a need for medical care that specifically served people who were attending direct actions, demonstrations and political protests.”
"In the early 2000s they pioneered community-supported trials to find an antidote to pepper spray. These trials resulted in an antidote that has been used in street protests internationally.”

REI is a consumer co-op. So, the owners are the members (I'm one), but control, management, is otherwise pretty standard hierarchy of a board of directors and a CEO and managers under her. The Board is full of the usual corporate executives and non-profit-industrial-complex-types. Workers have no more power than in a C-corp. So the shop workers are subject to the usual poor treatment that other wage-laborers are.
The REI workers have been trying to unionize with the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW). They have been having a hard time getting their first contract from REI.
Three seats on the board have become vacant. The member-owners were to vote to decide who fills them. Some members nominated candidates who are sympathetic to the union and environmental causes. But they were left off the ballot that management sent to members. The ballot only listed three candidates favored by management: one per seat. Our choices were either a corporate shill or "withhold" our approval.
The workers requested that members vote "withhold" to show our displeasure with the state of affairs in REI. And "withhold" won for all three seats! ✊🏼

‘Although Sparks, 34, has been tapped by law enforcement in the past to help train officers on how to find suspects online, according to emails seen by NBC News, she said this time she isn’t interested in helping police.’
‘“Absolutely the f--- not,” she said.’

I'd like to think this is true, but I'm going to need someone to go on record with their name before I believe it.

NY Times Headline today. Wow if there's such broad and passionate hatred for the private health insurance industry in the US, you'd think someone would run for office on a platform of replacing it with some national health insurance program like all other wealthy countries have. I'll bet that would be pretty popular. You could call it something catchy like “Single-Payer” or “Medicare for All”. Seems like a winning issue is just sitting there waiting for someone to take it up. I mean, why wouldn't you?

I'm sorry Alissa. That's so frustrating. Especially since that sounds interesting.
I learned this lesson the hard way long ago: Write up any long post in a text editor/word processor, spell check, and then copy-paste into web form. The web can be too flaky to trust.

I think these techie types are leading indicators. Apple and information security nerds were very early on the Twitter scene. They were two of the subcultures that established it. Good sign that they're here.

I hate the “AI" thing with the violence of Hurricane Helene on a bad day, but the new “machine learning" thing that Apple added to the OS that’ll recognize and let you copy text out of an image is super spiffy! It only needed minimal cleanup.

A panel of a comic by First Dog on the Moon: A cartoon dog points at an illustration of a rocket ship flying into the Sun while saying,
"Remember capitalism is working perfectly. You're supposed to be exhausted and frightened that you will lose your job and die old and homeless, it makes it easier to treat you like garbage and pay you less. If you're worrying about the rent you're not worrying about firing all the billionaires into the sun where they belong.”

Ugh. Problem with allowing Tankies in your group or coalition, no matter what nominal cause you are organizing around, their *primary* interest in it is as a vehicle to promote their organization. Because they believe that the ultimate solution to all problems is supremacy of their Party.
In Seattle, all the direct actionists, had one goal: shut down the Ministerial. That's it. No one was conniving to get their people on the Steering Committee. (There was no such hierarchy). No one was worried how the DA would look on the news. If the media would be able to use any of it to make them look bad, and so hurt their recruitment/or relationship with electeds.

I firmly believe that we were able to shut down the WTO in 1999, in part because at the time in the Pacific Northwest there were no tankie groups trying to co-opt the thing in order to increase their own name recognition, funding, and recruiting.
