Yeah it's heresy on Lemmy, but I do find it genuinely useful. My only regret is that I have to use Claude/Anthropic more than I'd like, which is why I have a vested interest in selfhosting myself. I'd rather figure out how to run the larger models myself and cut them off completely, but you even begin to mention that here and you'll get downvoted to hell.

I like the AI tag idea. I'm someone who has what I'd call a noderate approach to AI, not an AI bro but any means but I'm also okay with some things built with AI if they're done with care. If others don't want to see it, fine, then that's what a tag could be useful with. However the fuck AI/slop comments on something that admits to being AI is annoying to me. (We know it's AI, they literally said it is).
If it becomes too much content, then yes would be okay with bi-forcating the community, buy only after it becomes a problem.

No, this is done by a third party, like how the Oblivion remastered was done. Oversight is done by CDPR though so I have hopes that the story will hold up. They also know they have a high bar after Cyberpunk's release.
Their roadmap is the same, from what they publicly share. All effort is being poured into W4, while Cyberpunk (2, 2078, who knows), is probably in early development, with the majority of the team swiveling to that once W4 releases

How people have grown up and lived their entire lives in a small town. Aka proudly only being in one area of our very large world, and it shows with their views how narrow minded people can be.
< 50% of Americans have a passport. Even fewer have actually used it to travel outside of the country.
Not saying you have to take a lavish European getaway, but maybe instead of going to Disney World for the third time, go to minimum Canada or something and experience something different.

That is quite literally my point. Everything, absolutely everything here is open and can be used however any instance owner wants. You can say "leave that shit alone", **but there is no obligation to whatsoever**.
You should assume **every** instance owner can and is viewing all of your private data, sending it through whatever LLM/mod tools they want. Are they? Probably not. **But they can, and there is no obligation not to**.

Thank you for calling this out. I think people assume that since it's held by private instance owners that the fediverse is secure. I've posted this comment many times, that **no**, the fediverse is quite literally by design **open and unencrypted**.
A post is literally blasted out to _anyone_ who listens, same with comments, upvotes, downvotes, everything can be saved, stored, and used for whatever anyone who listens wants. It should be completely assumed that nefarious agencies are currently listening and storing everything we do here. **This is by design**. It's the tradeoff we have of having an open platform. Anyone can spin up a server, and that means _anyone_.
DMs are similar, they're blasted out to the other server. If the server admin of the user in question wants to read them, they can. Lemmy/the fediverse is **not** a secure messaging platform. That's why the Lemmy devs literally put a Matrix handle option in the profile, to encourage people to use Matrix instead. A DM on here should be simple, to the point, and if need be, inviting them to speak on something secure.

Nd let's not forget that there was an economic benefit too that conservatives will ignore. People were able to get out of their house and go spend money thanks to the people who shoveled. People went to work and kept things going.
Conservatives frequently think these things bring no value, and will absolutely mock it on fox news saying "so people can wALk". But yes, the benefit is they can go keep the economy going.
Its why I don't understand why they are against things like high speed rail. Its an _investment_. Every time we connect people together trade happens, and economies grow. Its kind of how that works.

This is one of those things that you know something looks wrong or cheap, but you don't know why. Once you know though you can't unsee it, and it's absolutely horrible.
I think a lot of people have tvs that can't handle darks well, so things like the dark knight, game of thrones, I remember the departed especially, if you have a lot of shadow it won't show at all. So there was already a push from consumers to make things "easier to see" at the expense of good cinematography.
Netflix though is the worst because they encourage and actively push for people to watch big block uster hits on their phones and tablets while commuting or out and about. Turns out big movies don't really look great on a 4.3 inch screen, and so my tin foil hat theory is all this over brightness is to make things easy to watch on formats that aren't good for them.
But line must go up. They make more money when you watch a big budget drama on your cracked iPhone, so screw actual good lighting. Otherwise you might watch a YouTube video or social media instead of giving them views.

You’re right. Small steps matter, and I’ve made plenty myself to live and work more ethically. But that’s not what your original comment said. You said:

You suggested an oversimplified binary situation. That’s simply not realistic for most people. Suggesting be a half-ass employee isn’t meaningful advice either.
A better way to approach this is to recognize that everyone has a moral line they need to define for themselves, and to regularly reflect on whether their work crosses it. If it does, they can decide whether leaving is feasible, or start moving toward something more aligned with their values.
"Just quit your job" is not an answer. As The Good Place illustrated perfectly, modern life makes it impossible to be entirely moral. They highlighted that by buying a simple tomato you are indirectly supporting big farming, greenhouse gas emissions, unfair labor practices, even slave labor. By participating in society _at all_ you are an immoral person.
So yes, we should all try to do better, but we also need realistic paths, not platitudes.

The first time I've ever seen a boycott work, congrats all. For reference remember the cheapest plan is $11 a month, so that was roughly $18.6 million / _month_ lost in revenue they were looking at. Even for a huge company, almost 20mil drop in monthly revenue is going to hit them hard.

Music was always the one for me. I couldn't listen to that music or this music because "That's gay bro". It didn't matter that I listened to a large variety, it was instilled in me that some music is okay, other stuff is not.
One of my earliest memories was being into Britney Spears. I was young, 10 or so. Dad was never home and I liked things, and I liked her music. My memory is that I was listening to it in the car, my CD of hers, and then I remember mom and dad arguing, and I don't remember ever seeing that CD again. My mom confirmed when I was an adult that dad threw it out because he didn't want me to listen to her. Did he share any of his music with me as an alternative? No of course not, I just couldn't listen to that.
Now as an adult I've fully embraced it. I love me Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Queen, and other "manly" bands (Yes I know, I chuckle too at Queen), but I'm also an avid Swifty (I even mod [!taylorswift@poptalk.scrubbles.tech](https://poptalk.scrubbles.tech/c/taylorswift) ) because sometimes you just want a song that feels a bit happier, and I even took my wife to the Eras tour. I love Olivia Rodrigo because damn if we don't all have some teenage angst sometimes, and I've gone back a bit to Britney too - but not as much.
What a shame that people think that art should be subject to what they think the world is like. There is room to like many different things. Enjoying one thing doesn't mean you dislike another thing. People can like many different things. I can enjoy A24 films while also laughing at Wil Farrell movies. None of that means that I'm this or that - humans are complex and like what we like. They have the right to ask, but I don't have to pay. I've been playing with Jellyfin for about a month now, and I have to say, it's just as easy as Plex is. The only thing I had to do myself was make my own users. In fact, I tried Jellyfin a few years ago and was unimpressed - now all I see is Plex making stuff to make advertisers happy while Jellyfin is adding stuff to make it's users happy, to the point where I think Jellyfin has surpassed Plex.

Define remote streaming, because they all support it unless there's some term I don't know about. Jellyfin allows me to remote stream out of the box - just like Plex used to.
The only thing I can think of that you're referring to is the proxied streaming thing, which I don't care about anyway. Jellyfin connects directly to my new server

Right? Absolutely ludicrous. I can't get over how they can be so arrogant to think they deserve money for that. It's core functionality that existed before they forked off of emby. They didn't even write that code. Then they have no infrastructure for it, because it transcodes and streams from _my_ server over _my_ network. Any infrastructure they have in that process is nothing I wanted (looking at the auth that for some reason needs to phone home).
No, this is too far, I'm officially leaving Plex.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say you're both wrong. Here me out.
As other commenters have said, there should never be any expectation of privacy on the fediverse. DMs here and private items are not actually private, they're quite literally blasted out to anyone who listens. I feel like I have to say that a lot. I actually like how Lemmy handles it, it warns you that it's unencrypted and that it recommends Matrix (and you can put your matrix handle on your profile).
However. I'm also disillusioned by Dansup. He made a great project with Pixelfed. It got off the ground and has a great following. However, I've read through the code, I've tried to spin it up, hell even tried to help contribute - but it's a spaghetti'd mess of unmaintainable code. What irks me is rather than dive in and fix the code, help those who honestly want to spin up his projects, he starts a completely separate project (off the same spaghetti'd base that barely scales), and goes on a whole PR junket talking about it. Then when I see people asking questions of his code or how to do things he usually jumps down their throats - or completely ignores them.
And honestly the biggest thing that irked me was that I didn't feel he gave credit to the hundreds - thousands of other people who work to make the fediverse work. Pixelfed is a great experience - but it's one of many all working together, and the developers are a huge chunk, but you have the infrastructure, us admins hosting, those out there vocalizing it, those trying to start communities, it's an ecosystem, and I just felt like he ignored the fediverse and instead pushed Pixelfed.

They built this whole world into the game and did NOTHING with it! It's empty! Hogwarts the settings is **perfect**! The castle was fun to walk around in, to explore! I 100%'d the game because I loved exploring in it! **Then they did nothing else to the game**.

Yes, but if you need a truck, use a truck. If you need a car, use a car. They both do similar things, but the reason it's taking a while for that stuff is because the protocol was not built for that in mind. They're two different use cases. You're not the first to have the idea here, and I'm sure you won't be the last. Use each protocol for what they're good at. ActivityPub was designed to be a great social network protocol. Matrix and XMPP were both built to be great secure messaging protocols. Trying to shoehorn either one into a use case it wasn't meant to be results in a subpar experience.
What would be neat is if the Lemmy Client added a messaging protocol with it, so it could be both a matrix and a lemmy server. Each user gets their own Matrix handle out of the gate, so DMs are actually Matrix DMs. Then you could also open any matrix client with it too. The clients I have no problem with them being dual purpose, the protocols though, those are very specific.

It's a weird feeling in the beginning. For me I was the same, I realized how addicted I had become to it, almost withdrawal from it. But after a while I realized what toll the constant firehose had taken on me.
You'll notice we have less here, I view it as a good thing. Less content, but it's higher quality. I check my phone less but when I do it's less mindless scrolling. There are actual good articles.
Plus as you see I can actually chat with people here, instead the insta-hate I got on Reddit.

Idk man, at this point I see the hope, but after watching a few videos today of deep dives into their leadership - I don't have much hope for them anymore. Most of them come from data brokers and ad agencies, Meta, and other big tech. If it's not today, it'll happen tomorrow when the dust does settle.
Looking at the PR where they literally removed "We will never sell your data" was pretty much the final nail in the coffin for me.

Right? The license literally says they have a right to everything - _everything_ we do in Firefox, and that we grant them full access to it. The shit is that? I don't need a law degree to read and understand that.
No, Mozilla, you _don't_ have permission to see everything I write and type. You don't have permission to see the images I upload or even as far as I'm concerned you don't have the rights to see what webpages I visit. The most you get is when I (used to) submit a bug report.
The browser is the fundamental most basic access to the internet. I get that there's _potential_ for data brokering profit, but it is a slap in the face to everyone who used firefox for privacy reasons.
They're trying to backpedal now:

Eh. That's not a big of a loss as you're making it out to be. I purposely buy my games, I want to own them. (Asterisk with licensing and all). Point being that I don't agree with Ubisoft that we need to get used to Games as a Service. I don't want to rent my games. Even mid tier games, I want to own them.

This is surprisingly one of the few actual useful uses of blockchain. Business tried to shove it in everywhere and it didn't make sense because blockchain is a way to audit federated separate instances - which businesses are not. They're a single monolithic structure, and they don't need the trust - they already have it. They're themselves, they just have to trust their own internal teams.
We, on the otherhand, are the perfect use for it. A way to say X person paid Y person for this product on this day at this time, X person now has the authority to rate Y person for how they did. Immutable, impossible to fake.

Nail on the head, and yes it does.
I like the trend I'm seeing of people stepping up to mod and run ghost communities. Most communities would take off - with a bit of love and care. (That usually means you are the only poster for quite a while though, while lurkers quietly upvote).
I would like to see a more regulated way of taking over ghost communities, like having a vote system for a community taking itself back if mods don't respond in X weeks or something. Lemmy world has a good system with their lemmy world support channel though, or at least it appears that way.

Be careful with this approach. It's great you're excited, but I was in that boat. When the reddit exodus started everyone made a community for every niche, but then there was not enough to keep them going. So communities petered out one by one
I've found it's better to focus your efforts on a couple of communities and get them going vs spreading out.

For those who remember, it was bad enough where it was memeable. Once your factory got to a certain size we would have to turn autosaves down to every half an hour because they would take over 3 minutes - or longer. It became a mandatory break time, to stand up and get a drink.

I know I said something that may be taken this way, and I stand by it so I'll repeat it here:

I'm not afraid of saying that yes, that is my opinion. I've helped a lot of people migrate here away from Reddit, and I also hold the opinion that sign up is a bit daunting for users - but it's not impossible and it's gotten much easier than it was even just a few years ago.
What I see more often from people dipping their toes into the fediverse is _constant_ complaining and whining. I've been through... 5-6 waves of new reddimigrants, and each time there are a quiet majority who pick up the fediverse and start running with it, and I've chatted with a good many of them. However, there's also a major chunk of people who immediately start complaining. There isn't feature parity, it's more confusing, it's less stable, why can't it do video - all of which have been answered a thousand times and are constantly improving.
To me it's exactly like the sales people. They come in, demand the absolute best service, complain that their niche communities aren't thriving, and refuse to even stick around for a week to see what it's like. If they aren't willing to even do the bare minimum of finding out "What is an instance?" then they're not going to stick around when we tell them that none of us can afford to host video, or that we will never have stability like Reddit, or this, or that. So I say let them leave. We came here to the fediverse because we want to build something different, and we know there are shortcomings that come with it.
If people want to join earnestly and help us build something here, curate small communities that we can be proud of, then I welcome them with open arms. If they can't even bother to read the first two sentences on the joinlemmy page, well, you make your own success there.

Title question mostly. I've played with XTTS-v2 and it worked pretty well, but I'm wondering if folks are using anything else special. I'd like to train my own voice finetune which is what I did with XTTS-v2, and then use it with home assistant's voice feature. Welcome all opinions on it!

It's a bit of a mixed bag, and the real thing is that there _are_ other people who want to talk about it here. Trust me, I run a Taylor Swift community here, and it is an uphill battle - but it's worth it because there _are_ people who care and enjoy the community.
If you're up for it, choose one or two communities and then nurture them. When reddit imploded 2 years ago we came over and we had a ton of people open hundreds of communities and then abandon them, people just opened them left and right and then expected a large audience the next day. Instead expect it to follow the 90-9-1 rule. Out of a hundred people, 90 of them will lurk and never participate. 9 will comment, and one will post. You will need to be the one to post for a while - but it will grow over time.
Take care of the communities, let them know you're here to stay, and that it's a place where you can chat about it. We're a lot of nerds here, but nerds can also like football, there's [!hiphopheads@sopuli.xyz](https://sopuli.xyz/c/hiphopheads) that is usually pretty quiet but obviously people subscribed to it.

2 pizzas, a small order of breadsticks, and wanted to splurge and get cinnamon sticks.
Pizzas are a "Buy one get one deal!" at 13 bucks a pizza. Figured what the hell, I'll splurge on desert then with the deal. Get to checkout... hold on a minute.... _50 dollars for pizza?!_ Wait a minute _**80 dollars after fees and taxes?!**_
Usually I only use Doordash for finding something, then I order direct from the store. I just saw the sweet "buy one get one" deal and thought eh, fine I'm here. Right, _that's_ why I stopped using door dash. I'm not spending 80 dollars on freaking pizza. I'll just go pick it up and spend a _quarter_ of that price.

I run a few communities that I would consider to be fairly women-oriented, or at least I would expect them to be interested. I do not expect many men to be interested, and hey that's okay. I welcome anyone who wants to, but no harm if it's not your thing.
But any post that gets made gets downvoted to hell. I routinely have to moderate and remove posts of "Why is this here" and "This is stupid" even though there _are_ people who enjoy it, they are just swarmed by other commenters, and it's made my members less active.
It's pretty clear how people vote and act here, I'm coming up on 2 years here and it's been like how you'd expect. Downvotes don't mean "I don't think this adds to the conversation" or "This is appropriate", they mean "I personally don't like this" here, and I think that kills a lot of our smaller communities.

Supreme Commander has been a very fun RTS - that barely worked on Windows.
FAF, or Forged Alliance Forever brought it back to life with my friends, where it rebuilt lobbies, shored up a lot of the patchy netcode, and made it fun - but as we know modding and linux gaming can be tedious.
Until I found this repo, where FAF now fully "supports" Linux! It was such a breeze, it found my Steam install, my copy of Forged Alliance, and it set everything else up. Huge kudos to the maintainer!

Sure, you can, but nobody does it and most consumer networks actively block it. Not to mention that multicast is UDP, http is over TCP, so it's irrelevant to your question anyway. There is no "listening" to http traffic unless you are looking to listen for traffic sent explicitly to you, which is why everyone is asking you - what are you trying to _do_?
Are you trying to set up an http server that listens through a VPN, to serve a webpage or API or something?
Do you just want to listen to random UDP multicast traffic? That has nothing to do with http, and idk why you would want to since no one does, but I suppose you could.
Or are you misunderstanding networking and thinking you can somehow listen to someone else's Internet traffic? Which you can't, unless you meet a specific set of criteria - which I'm not going to go into at this point.
You're unwilling or unable to explain your actual problem, which is why I'm getting frustrated with you. I'm not asking about protocols you're listening on, or questioning your Wikipedia skills, all I want to know is _what are you trying to do?_

He thinks internet traffic is blasted to every computer out there and wants to "listen" for it. Honestly I can't tell and they can't describe the problem in a way where we can help them

There is no multicast over the open Internet. At least not at a layer you would ever see. The only HTTP requests you will ever see are the ones that are specifically requested to your server. What you're doing would work internally inside a private network if you're trying to do that, but it sounds like you confirmed that already.

Okay so I'm going to answer this with soda. So when people order soda no ice, they think they're being smart and getting more soda. Well, define soda.
You see, most of those drinks are specifically designed with the ice in mind. All drinks are some sort of mixture with water, and they take ice into account, they expect the ice to melt and become part of the drink. With soda, they made the drink with the ice melting in mind.
So when you order a soda no ice, you're not getting more soda necessarily, justa. More concentrated sugary syrupy drink that isn't properly mixed.

Links to download are in the article. It's not seemless, but the world is "alive". Drove around, got a 5 star wanted level, died and respawned, people out walking around, rode the subway, it was great.
Things noticably not there - spawn locations of your favorite cars/helicopters, and of course no story stuff - but I spent a few hours having a blast.
