Yes? I don't understand the point you're trying to make now. CVs, skills, etc sound specific to this so they wouldn't be federated. Social features like posts, replies, comments would be, as they match ActivityPub, they're not extending the protocol or anything for it.
So I really don't understand why you're so upset at the app. If you don't want the professional stuff then it's as simple as not signing up for an account. If you don't want any social things from them then it's the same as any activitypub: defederate or block.
You don't like it, I think that's obvious, but I don't understand the multi-comment thread where your argument seems to be "I don't like it so it shouldn't exist". You don't have to understand why other people find it useful for it to be useful to those other people.

Yeah it's heresy on Lemmy, but I do find it genuinely useful. My only regret is that I have to use Claude/Anthropic more than I'd like, which is why I have a vested interest in selfhosting myself. I'd rather figure out how to run the larger models myself and cut them off completely, but you even begin to mention that here and you'll get downvoted to hell.

I like the AI tag idea. I'm someone who has what I'd call a noderate approach to AI, not an AI bro but any means but I'm also okay with some things built with AI if they're done with care. If others don't want to see it, fine, then that's what a tag could be useful with. However the fuck AI/slop comments on something that admits to being AI is annoying to me. (We know it's AI, they literally said it is).
If it becomes too much content, then yes would be okay with bi-forcating the community, buy only after it becomes a problem.

Hi all, my Unifi Doorbell just died after only 4 years of service. I've been pretty disheartened with them lately, other products haven't lived up to the company's promise.
So I'm not looking to replace my networking stack yet, but I am looking for a doorbell camera. I only have the Unifi machine, but I also have an extensive docker/kubernetes stack, and mostly I want to use it with Home Assistant.
Any recommendations? Open to software, hardware, you name it. I have a few other Unifi cameras too, if they could be brought into the fold while I slowly migrate, I'd be interested. Thanks!

My only request/suggestion, is Rule 3. Rule 3 I think has been used way too often to justify removing posts seemingly arbitrarily. A blanket "No hardware" rule is restrictive when homelab and selfhosted are a venn diagram that are very close together. For example, you can't talk about Unraid without also talking about what drive types you use. Or a post I'm thinking about posting, "What doorbell cameras do you prefer with HomeAssistant? and What NVR should I use?". All selfhosted, all homelab, all interconnected... but I am _afraid_ of posting it because of the iron fist.

No, this is done by a third party, like how the Oblivion remastered was done. Oversight is done by CDPR though so I have hopes that the story will hold up. They also know they have a high bar after Cyberpunk's release.
Their roadmap is the same, from what they publicly share. All effort is being poured into W4, while Cyberpunk (2, 2078, who knows), is probably in early development, with the majority of the team swiveling to that once W4 releases

How people have grown up and lived their entire lives in a small town. Aka proudly only being in one area of our very large world, and it shows with their views how narrow minded people can be.
< 50% of Americans have a passport. Even fewer have actually used it to travel outside of the country.
Not saying you have to take a lavish European getaway, but maybe instead of going to Disney World for the third time, go to minimum Canada or something and experience something different.

You have a very rational way of seeing it, and I would have done the same thing. Only thing I'd say for the original asker is to be a bit more direct, they dance around it a bit, but that's a nitpik at most.
A story, I remember about 7 years ago I was asked to go through and rename every instance of "whitelist"/"blacklist" to "allowlist"/"denylist". I stand by that searching through the codebase and having me do that everywhere was a waste of time, it took me about a full week of time just to do that change with DB migrations and frontend updates and everything in just my chunk of code, I can't imagine how much time was spent company-wide. I found out it was actually pushed by the "People Department" as they called themselves then, and they did not care at all that it was in code only and not even visible to anyone. But I rolled my eyes and did it, it's just one of those things. I do purposely choose allowlist/denylist when writing new code because I understand it, but I also stand by it was asanine and meaningless to waste time and have me do all of them at once. A better mandate would have been "If you see whitelist/blacklist, you should now change it to allowlist/blocklist as you come across it, with teammates holding that bar in PRs. No modifications should be done without also updating the naming".

You are correct, and it's what I was suggesting op do if they don't like what other admins do. It's right there.
As for viewing votes there's a whole site dedicated to showing everyone's votes, it's called Lemvotes. Feel free to say please, but people are still going to do it. Votes and everything elsewhere are very much public, best to get used to that now.

So, I guess in your pervalence, you are correct, you do not have that freedom. Even _I_, as an instance owner, do not have that freedom, because everything I'm typing here is being sent out to as many servers are listening too. **By being completely open so that anyone can spin up a server and listen for activity, it literally means that we are open and any server can listen for activity**.
Anyone can spin up a server, create some LLM bot, and start replying to anyone they want. That instance can be defederated of course, but that is the only tool. This is what you signed up for, this is the open and free internet. We do not have any walls here.

That is quite literally my point. Everything, absolutely everything here is open and can be used however any instance owner wants. You can say "leave that shit alone", **but there is no obligation to whatsoever**.
You should assume **every** instance owner can and is viewing all of your private data, sending it through whatever LLM/mod tools they want. Are they? Probably not. **But they can, and there is no obligation not to**.

Thank you for calling this out. I think people assume that since it's held by private instance owners that the fediverse is secure. I've posted this comment many times, that **no**, the fediverse is quite literally by design **open and unencrypted**.
A post is literally blasted out to _anyone_ who listens, same with comments, upvotes, downvotes, everything can be saved, stored, and used for whatever anyone who listens wants. It should be completely assumed that nefarious agencies are currently listening and storing everything we do here. **This is by design**. It's the tradeoff we have of having an open platform. Anyone can spin up a server, and that means _anyone_.
DMs are similar, they're blasted out to the other server. If the server admin of the user in question wants to read them, they can. Lemmy/the fediverse is **not** a secure messaging platform. That's why the Lemmy devs literally put a Matrix handle option in the profile, to encourage people to use Matrix instead. A DM on here should be simple, to the point, and if need be, inviting them to speak on something secure.

It's very clear on signup, on the READMEs, even on the DM portal itself, that messages are unencrypted and there is no sense of privacy, and that admins have full visibility and can do what they want with them.

There is **no** promise, duty, or responsibility that an admin has beyond legal and what they themselves promise. The fediverse is great in that if you disagree with your admin, you are free to leave and choose a different one.
As for GDPR, feel free to argue it, but when it's claimed at every turn that messaging is unencrypted and basically open, well, I don't think it'd hold up. It literally says to go use Matrix or something else.

Nd let's not forget that there was an economic benefit too that conservatives will ignore. People were able to get out of their house and go spend money thanks to the people who shoveled. People went to work and kept things going.
Conservatives frequently think these things bring no value, and will absolutely mock it on fox news saying "so people can wALk". But yes, the benefit is they can go keep the economy going.
Its why I don't understand why they are against things like high speed rail. Its an _investment_. Every time we connect people together trade happens, and economies grow. Its kind of how that works.

I'm not sure your level of understanding of cloud infrastructure, so let me know if you need me to go into more detail. Disk storage, like what is attached to a VPS/VM is very expensive, and it's the 100GB drive you have attached. What is much cheaper is object/blob storage, known in AWS and most cloud providers as S3. This is far far cheaper for many reasons.
Matrix (and really I should say Synapse, what I use) can be configured to save images, photos, uploads, etc to save to a blob storage "bucket" instead of disk. So you can lower your disk from 100 down to something lower because your data is stored in blob storage (fully encrypted). See all of this would be true if we were in some academic argument, but you're not. You're not arguing for your case or facts, you're arguing against people. People who get to define their own rules for their spaces. So, in your own vernacular, if you choose to "fallate anyone’s junk after doing my own research", which we all know means "I want to be inflammatory and annoy people", then you're going to have consequences, because us people don't want to hear it.

This is one of those things that you know something looks wrong or cheap, but you don't know why. Once you know though you can't unsee it, and it's absolutely horrible.
I think a lot of people have tvs that can't handle darks well, so things like the dark knight, game of thrones, I remember the departed especially, if you have a lot of shadow it won't show at all. So there was already a push from consumers to make things "easier to see" at the expense of good cinematography.
Netflix though is the worst because they encourage and actively push for people to watch big block uster hits on their phones and tablets while commuting or out and about. Turns out big movies don't really look great on a 4.3 inch screen, and so my tin foil hat theory is all this over brightness is to make things easy to watch on formats that aren't good for them.
But line must go up. They make more money when you watch a big budget drama on your cracked iPhone, so screw actual good lighting. Otherwise you might watch a YouTube video or social media instead of giving them views.

Well known I think I would bypass Anubis completely. Have that set as a separate block in the proxy and just continue on to whatever backend app it needs. OAuth... yeah I could see it having issues with the callback in OAuth, if it started thinking the callback endpoint was a bot. You could fix that by not using Anubis for that endpoint. In NGinx, that's just a location block like:

Not terribly. I posted this because I think it would help any fediverse site and it would. It's just a proxy that sits in front of whatever traffic you choose to send to it. So whatever routes go to the web client (probably /) you just forward to Anubis, which forwards onto piefed. Lemmy, piefed, any web based app that's how you would do it. You can be granular and go route by route, or do all of it. It's not hard coded for any site.

You’re right. Small steps matter, and I’ve made plenty myself to live and work more ethically. But that’s not what your original comment said. You said:

You suggested an oversimplified binary situation. That’s simply not realistic for most people. Suggesting be a half-ass employee isn’t meaningful advice either.
A better way to approach this is to recognize that everyone has a moral line they need to define for themselves, and to regularly reflect on whether their work crosses it. If it does, they can decide whether leaving is feasible, or start moving toward something more aligned with their values.
"Just quit your job" is not an answer. As The Good Place illustrated perfectly, modern life makes it impossible to be entirely moral. They highlighted that by buying a simple tomato you are indirectly supporting big farming, greenhouse gas emissions, unfair labor practices, even slave labor. By participating in society _at all_ you are an immoral person.
So yes, we should all try to do better, but we also need realistic paths, not platitudes.

A near perfect gaming experience 15 years ago with one of the most epic sci-fi stories I've played, now to a boring bland corporate ripoff with absolutely no heart. Gears of war the same, a gritty action game based on the survival of humanity to... I don't even remember the last two installments. The first time I've ever seen a boycott work, congrats all. For reference remember the cheapest plan is $11 a month, so that was roughly $18.6 million / _month_ lost in revenue they were looking at. Even for a huge company, almost 20mil drop in monthly revenue is going to hit them hard.

Music was always the one for me. I couldn't listen to that music or this music because "That's gay bro". It didn't matter that I listened to a large variety, it was instilled in me that some music is okay, other stuff is not.
One of my earliest memories was being into Britney Spears. I was young, 10 or so. Dad was never home and I liked things, and I liked her music. My memory is that I was listening to it in the car, my CD of hers, and then I remember mom and dad arguing, and I don't remember ever seeing that CD again. My mom confirmed when I was an adult that dad threw it out because he didn't want me to listen to her. Did he share any of his music with me as an alternative? No of course not, I just couldn't listen to that.
Now as an adult I've fully embraced it. I love me Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Queen, and other "manly" bands (Yes I know, I chuckle too at Queen), but I'm also an avid Swifty (I even mod [!taylorswift@poptalk.scrubbles.tech](https://poptalk.scrubbles.tech/c/taylorswift) ) because sometimes you just want a song that feels a bit happier, and I even took my wife to the Eras tour. I love Olivia Rodrigo because damn if we don't all have some teenage angst sometimes, and I've gone back a bit to Britney too - but not as much.
What a shame that people think that art should be subject to what they think the world is like. There is room to like many different things. Enjoying one thing doesn't mean you dislike another thing. People can like many different things. I can enjoy A24 films while also laughing at Wil Farrell movies. None of that means that I'm this or that - humans are complex and like what we like. Even if I wasn't a Plex pass holder, they're _removing_ functionality. How do you not see that that is unacceptable? If they need income they can add new functionality that's paid but this is something that was free before, and is now no longer free. Worse yet, it's my server, I don't know how they need 7 dollars a month for any infrastructure they have to support it when I do the heavy compute and streaming myself.
It's absolutely just greedy. They could have charged for that new UI they released. Or any new feature. They're charging for things that either cost them pennies, or worse yet probably nothing.
And we're not even talking about how with my Plex pass they're still getting emails pushing them to join and how scummy that is

They have the right to ask, but I don't have to pay. I've been playing with Jellyfin for about a month now, and I have to say, it's just as easy as Plex is. The only thing I had to do myself was make my own users. In fact, I tried Jellyfin a few years ago and was unimpressed - now all I see is Plex making stuff to make advertisers happy while Jellyfin is adding stuff to make it's users happy, to the point where I think Jellyfin has surpassed Plex.

Define remote streaming, because they all support it unless there's some term I don't know about. Jellyfin allows me to remote stream out of the box - just like Plex used to.
The only thing I can think of that you're referring to is the proxied streaming thing, which I don't care about anyway. Jellyfin connects directly to my new server

I'm a Plex pass holder on my server - and my user does not have a plex pass. From what I'm reading they need to pay a subscription to access my (Plex pass) server.

Right? Absolutely ludicrous. I can't get over how they can be so arrogant to think they deserve money for that. It's core functionality that existed before they forked off of emby. They didn't even write that code. Then they have no infrastructure for it, because it transcodes and streams from _my_ server over _my_ network. Any infrastructure they have in that process is nothing I wanted (looking at the auth that for some reason needs to phone home).
No, this is too far, I'm officially leaving Plex.

It's because valve has always been transparent about it. They've also put in place a lot of protections for gamers, which is why I trust their store. Their stuff is also a license, but I have yet to see something pulled out of my inventory. Actually there was a game once, and it was a Ubisoft game now that I think of it. I believe that's when they put in more protections.
Ubisoft wants to make everything cloud dependent and then want us to be happy that we can't play our games anymore. They lost all of my trust. If it's not a purchase, then it's a rental in my eyes, and I'd never pay more than $20 for a rental.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say you're both wrong. Here me out.
As other commenters have said, there should never be any expectation of privacy on the fediverse. DMs here and private items are not actually private, they're quite literally blasted out to anyone who listens. I feel like I have to say that a lot. I actually like how Lemmy handles it, it warns you that it's unencrypted and that it recommends Matrix (and you can put your matrix handle on your profile).
However. I'm also disillusioned by Dansup. He made a great project with Pixelfed. It got off the ground and has a great following. However, I've read through the code, I've tried to spin it up, hell even tried to help contribute - but it's a spaghetti'd mess of unmaintainable code. What irks me is rather than dive in and fix the code, help those who honestly want to spin up his projects, he starts a completely separate project (off the same spaghetti'd base that barely scales), and goes on a whole PR junket talking about it. Then when I see people asking questions of his code or how to do things he usually jumps down their throats - or completely ignores them.
And honestly the biggest thing that irked me was that I didn't feel he gave credit to the hundreds - thousands of other people who work to make the fediverse work. Pixelfed is a great experience - but it's one of many all working together, and the developers are a huge chunk, but you have the infrastructure, us admins hosting, those out there vocalizing it, those trying to start communities, it's an ecosystem, and I just felt like he ignored the fediverse and instead pushed Pixelfed.

They built this whole world into the game and did NOTHING with it! It's empty! Hogwarts the settings is **perfect**! The castle was fun to walk around in, to explore! I 100%'d the game because I loved exploring in it! **Then they did nothing else to the game**.
The game oversold all expectations! People just loved shelling out money for it! Then WB **just dropped it**.
I see things bitching every day about how their game studios don't make enough movie and then they shit the bed here by just letting that game sit here!
If they're actually worried about money **why are they not cranking out DLC every 4-6 months?!** People would buy it! They can't bitch and moan that games don't make money _and then they just flip the off switch on their freaking money printer_.

Yes, but if you need a truck, use a truck. If you need a car, use a car. They both do similar things, but the reason it's taking a while for that stuff is because the protocol was not built for that in mind. They're two different use cases. You're not the first to have the idea here, and I'm sure you won't be the last. Use each protocol for what they're good at. ActivityPub was designed to be a great social network protocol. Matrix and XMPP were both built to be great secure messaging protocols. Trying to shoehorn either one into a use case it wasn't meant to be results in a subpar experience.
What would be neat is if the Lemmy Client added a messaging protocol with it, so it could be both a matrix and a lemmy server. Each user gets their own Matrix handle out of the gate, so DMs are actually Matrix DMs. Then you could also open any matrix client with it too. The clients I have no problem with them being dual purpose, the protocols though, those are very specific.

Oh, yeah no activitypub isn't meant for private messaging. It's great for things like mastodon and lemmy, but there is zero privacy, it's meant to blast out to anyone who wants to listen. Messaging the best standards right now are Matrix and XMPP.

It's a weird feeling in the beginning. For me I was the same, I realized how addicted I had become to it, almost withdrawal from it. But after a while I realized what toll the constant firehose had taken on me.
You'll notice we have less here, I view it as a good thing. Less content, but it's higher quality. I check my phone less but when I do it's less mindless scrolling. There are actual good articles.
Plus as you see I can actually chat with people here, instead the insta-hate I got on Reddit.

LibreWolf for now. It's a drop in replacement, but it's not a full fork of Firefox either. They just kind of roll back any anti-privacy stuff whenever it gets merged in from the mainline. It'll do for now, but it's by no means final. I really want to stay off Chromium, anything we can do to prevent a single-engine option is best.

We're not morons here. I've heard people say "you don't understand the legalese behind it". What's to understand, it's all there in black and white. Legalese isn't some nuance thing in fact the trick is trying to read what they're not saying. For example

Idk man, at this point I see the hope, but after watching a few videos today of deep dives into their leadership - I don't have much hope for them anymore. Most of them come from data brokers and ad agencies, Meta, and other big tech. If it's not today, it'll happen tomorrow when the dust does settle.
Looking at the PR where they literally removed "We will never sell your data" was pretty much the final nail in the coffin for me.

Right? The license literally says they have a right to everything - _everything_ we do in Firefox, and that we grant them full access to it. The shit is that? I don't need a law degree to read and understand that.
No, Mozilla, you _don't_ have permission to see everything I write and type. You don't have permission to see the images I upload or even as far as I'm concerned you don't have the rights to see what webpages I visit. The most you get is when I (used to) submit a bug report.
The browser is the fundamental most basic access to the internet. I get that there's _potential_ for data brokering profit, but it is a slap in the face to everyone who used firefox for privacy reasons.
They're trying to backpedal now:
