Halo is officially dead. It's been dying for a while, this seals it.
For long time halo fans in the aughts, this is literally the last thing any of us ever wanted. Halo was always a completely different game than Call of Duty, but business never understood that and so today officially marks the end, where the Halo we knew is gone, and anything new will be a CoD clone more than anything else.

I've seen way way way more here on Lemmy bitching about GTA 6 than I have seen actually about it. The complaining about rockstar and GTA 6 is probably 80% of all the rockstar content I see here.

Unfortunately you will meet many more like this person. They are not special or unique, they are a dime a dozen and yes, it is a skill in learning how to work with them. Amazon does make more than their fair share of these people, and it's because it is a ruthless environment there, where if you want to do anything like get a promotion or raise you have to be visceral. At Amazon, yelling and tearing people down is a normal.
Luckily most I see who leave do not want to continue on like that, but it is clear when Amazon has left it's mark on someone. That being said, that's their problem, you have to learn how to work with them.
A few notes, I don't know what you're like at all so these aren't personal towards you, but rather my own personal findings.
- Use hard facts and figures
- Hedging, using phrases like "I think" or "I believe" are drilled into them as saying you don't know what you are talking about. Learn to be confident in what you are saying, or if you are not be confident in not knowing. Switch to concrete "It is" and "I do not know, but I'll find out (by X time).
- Do not include emotion/personal feelings.
- Best left at home or for a venting session later. Emotion will fall on deaf ears, and will be seen as you being unable to handle yourself. It's harsh yet, but be stoic. Ex amazon people have screamed in my face, be ready for encounters like that and stay neutral, using language above.
- Keep personal thoughts about them out of the room.
- They know you dislike them. Don't let it come through in the meeting. Prove your worth with your work. Their vapid buzzwords and metrics are how they will discern your ability to do your job. It's their game, and you can either learn it, or be shown the door.
Just a few. I'll add more if I think of any. On the side, yes they are hard to work with, but take it as a skill to learn how to work with them. You'll only see more through your career.

Yes? I don't understand the point you're trying to make now. CVs, skills, etc sound specific to this so they wouldn't be federated. Social features like posts, replies, comments would be, as they match ActivityPub, they're not extending the protocol or anything for it.
So I really don't understand why you're so upset at the app. If you don't want the professional stuff then it's as simple as not signing up for an account. If you don't want any social things from them then it's the same as any activitypub: defederate or block.
You don't like it, I think that's obvious, but I don't understand the multi-comment thread where your argument seems to be "I don't like it so it shouldn't exist". You don't have to understand why other people find it useful for it to be useful to those other people.

If others don't want to see it, fine, then that's what a tag could be useful with. However the fuck AI/slop comments on something that admits to being AI is annoying to me. Hi all, my Unifi Doorbell just died after only 4 years of service. I've been pretty disheartened with them lately, other products haven't lived up to the company's promise.
So I'm not looking to replace my networking stack yet, but I am looking for a doorbell camera. I only have the Unifi machine, but I also have an extensive docker/kubernetes stack, and mostly I want to use it with Home Assistant.
Any recommendations? Open to software, hardware, you name it. I have a few other Unifi cameras too, if they could be brought into the fold while I slowly migrate, I'd be interested. Thanks!

My only request/suggestion, is Rule 3. Rule 3 I think has been used way too often to justify removing posts seemingly arbitrarily. A blanket "No hardware" rule is restrictive when homelab and selfhosted are a venn diagram that are very close together. For example, you can't talk about Unraid without also talking about what drive types you use. Or a post I'm thinking about posting, "What doorbell cameras do you prefer with HomeAssistant? and What NVR should I use?". All selfhosted, all homelab, all interconnected... but I am _afraid_ of posting it because of the iron fist.

Took therapy for me to realize it. They said "You view the world in very binary terms, this will or won't happen. You are anxious over things like they either will or won't happen. The world though, isn't binary. It's very analog. Focusing on the worst possible outcome is to focus on one out of infinite possibilities that could happen in between. Is it possible? Sure. But it's not probable that the worst case will happen. Reality and history prove that it's usually somewhere in between the best and worst cases"
That there just clicked it with me, and made me realize that I had been focusing on the worst case. For me the trigger is climate change, and I used to have to turn off the news to avoid it. Therapy helped, and taught me that while the worst could happen, there are infinite number of outcomes to such a complex problem, and that me panicking over the worst possible case isn't going to help, and it's probably not even going to happen.
And it turns out I've been right. For that one trigger, there have been changes on both the best and worst cases. The US is going down a very horrid path, but the rest of the world is starting to turn the tide. Solar is only getting better. We're backwards here, but it's not backwards everywhere. The absolute worst case scenario probably won't happen. It'll probably be somewhere in between best and worst cases.

You have a very rational way of seeing it, and I would have done the same thing. Only thing I'd say for the original asker is to be a bit more direct, they dance around it a bit, but that's a nitpik at most.
A story, I remember about 7 years ago I was asked to go through and rename every instance of "whitelist"/"blacklist" to "allowlist"/"denylist". I stand by that searching through the codebase and having me do that everywhere was a waste of time, it took me about a full week of time just to do that change with DB migrations and frontend updates and everything in just my chunk of code, I can't imagine how much time was spent company-wide. I found out it was actually pushed by the "People Department" as they called themselves then, and they did not care at all that it was in code only and not even visible to anyone. But I rolled my eyes and did it, it's just one of those things. I do purposely choose allowlist/denylist when writing new code because I understand it, but I also stand by it was asanine and meaningless to waste time and have me do all of them at once. A better mandate would have been "If you see whitelist/blacklist, you should now change it to allowlist/blocklist as you come across it, with teammates holding that bar in PRs. No modifications should be done without also updating the naming".

She touches on one that I see very often here on Lemmy, where she distinguishes behavior around the two, and as the example she uses Harry Potter. That by knowing that Rowling uses her money in anti trans cases that it presents a moral problem. Her concept of "Virtue Mirroring" is the idea that you should not enjoy Harry Potter at all simply because of Rowling's beliefs, vs Ethical Media Consumption which says that if you want to be ethical then you cannot buy Harry Potter products, as you know that will be used in ways that you disagree with.
It's a good essay that I've enjoyed. I think we're too quick to throw away older media because it "didn't age well" or because someone involved ended up being horrible. That it's not immoral to pull out a DVD of a Weinstein film, or to re-read Harry Potter, but separating that going out and subscribing to watch the new Harry Potter is against Ethical Media Consumption. I really like that distinction, because it is perfectly okay to say you enjoyed Harry Potter, and rewatch the movies that you own, and do what you enjoy, while also having the nuance and critical awareness that you also cannot purchase anything with the brand on it.

2026-05-08 17:01:23 UTC

This is a great rundown of the phenomenon of the triangle of Ethical Media Consumption, Virtue Signalling, and what the author has coined "Virtue Mirroring".

You are on piefed.social, just defederate if you dislike it so much.

2026-05-04 04:53:20 UTC

and it will continue to be. **Again, you need to understand this**. There are **no** rules, guidelines or anything that an instance owner needs to follow beyond whatever legal requirements they have in their specific jurisdiction.
So, I guess in your pervalence, you are correct, you do not have that freedom. Even _I_, as an instance owner, do not have that freedom, because everything I'm typing here is being sent out to as many servers are listening too. **By being completely open so that anyone can spin up a server and listen for activity, it literally means that we are open and any server can listen for activity**.
Anyone can spin up a server, create some LLM bot, and start replying to anyone they want. That instance can be defederated of course, but that is the only tool. This is what you signed up for, this is the open and free internet. We do not have any walls here.

2026-05-04 04:47:55 UTC

- reply

That is quite literally my point. Everything, absolutely everything here is open and can be used however any instance owner wants. You can say "leave that shit alone", **but there is no obligation to whatsoever**.
You should assume **every** instance owner can and is viewing all of your private data, sending it through whatever LLM/mod tools they want. Are they? Probably not. **But they can, and there is no obligation not to**.

2026-05-04 04:18:10 UTC

- reply

Thank you for calling this out. I think people assume that since it's held by private instance owners that the fediverse is secure. I've posted this comment many times, that **no**, the fediverse is quite literally by design **open and unencrypted**.
A post is literally blasted out to _anyone_ who listens, same with comments, upvotes, downvotes, everything can be saved, stored, and used for whatever anyone who listens wants. It should be completely assumed that nefarious agencies are currently listening and storing everything we do here. **This is by design**. It's the tradeoff we have of having an open platform. Anyone can spin up a server, and that means _anyone_.
DMs are similar, they're blasted out to the other server. If the server admin of the user in question wants to read them, they can. Lemmy/the fediverse is **not** a secure messaging platform. That's why the Lemmy devs literally put a Matrix handle option in the profile, to encourage people to use Matrix instead. A DM on here should be simple, to the point, and if need be, inviting them to speak on something secure.

2026-05-04 04:14:47 UTC

- reply

It's very clear on signup, on the READMEs, even on the DM portal itself, that messages are unencrypted and there is no sense of privacy, and that admins have full visibility and can do what they want with them.
> Agreed, but that admin is breaking his promise, duty, responsibility (call it what you will) if they then upload these messages to an LLM for evaluation.
There is **no** promise, duty, or responsibility that an admin has beyond legal and what they themselves promise. The fediverse is great in that if you disagree with your admin, you are free to leave and choose a different one.
As for GDPR, feel free to argue it, but when it's claimed at every turn that messaging is unencrypted and basically open, well, I don't think it'd hold up. It literally says to go use Matrix or something else.

Conservatives frequently think these things bring no value, and will absolutely mock it on fox news saying "so people can wALk". But yes, the benefit is they can go keep the economy going.
Its why I don't understand why they are against things like high speed rail. Its an _investment_. Every time we connect people together trade happens, and economies grow. Its kind of how that works.

I'm not sure your level of understanding of cloud infrastructure, so let me know if you need me to go into more detail. Disk storage, like what is attached to a VPS/VM is very expensive, and it's the 100GB drive you have attached. What is much cheaper is object/blob storage, known in AWS and most cloud providers as S3. This is far far cheaper for many reasons.
Matrix (and really I should say Synapse, what I use) can be configured to save images, photos, uploads, etc to save to a blob storage "bucket" instead of disk. So you can lower your disk from 100 down to something lower because your data is stored in blob storage (fully encrypted). For synapse, the module you need is here: https://github.com/matrix-org/synapse-s3-storage-provider

There is a direct server though, is it federated? The readme doesn't say it's federated at all

This is one of those things that you know something looks wrong or cheap, but you don't know why. Once you know though you can't unsee it, and it's absolutely horrible.
I think a lot of people have tvs that can't handle darks well, so things like the dark knight, game of thrones, I remember the departed especially, if you have a lot of shadow it won't show at all. So there was already a push from consumers to make things "easier to see" at the expense of good cinematography.
Netflix though is the worst because they encourage and actively push for people to watch big block uster hits on their phones and tablets while commuting or out and about. Turns out big movies don't really look great on a 4.3 inch screen, and so my tin foil hat theory is all this over brightness is to make things easy to watch on formats that aren't good for them.
But line must go up. They make more money when you watch a big budget drama on your cracked iPhone, so screw actual good lighting. Otherwise you might watch a YouTube video or social media instead of giving them views.

Personally I factor this in with bans on my communities. I very rarely ban, but I do if I notice people like this, who I dub "downvote trolls". They don't participate (or when they do it's negatively), the just downvote constantly.
Now I'm fine with downvotes, I downvote, I think it's healthy to say "I don't like this content". However if _all_ you do is downvote (especially in a specific community) then I view a ban as a win win. We don't have to deal with your negativity and obviously you don't enjoy being here anyway from your voting patterns, so everyone wins.

Personally I'm refusing to buy anything Christmas related from any store that does that. It's just so cringe and obvious "BUY BUY BUY CONSUME MORE ITS CHRISTMAS YOU'LL BUY MORE IF IT'S CHRISTMAS BUY IT"

Well known I think I would bypass Anubis completely. Have that set as a separate block in the proxy and just continue on to whatever backend app it needs. OAuth... yeah I could see it having issues with the callback in OAuth, if it started thinking the callback endpoint was a bot. You could fix that by not using Anubis for that endpoint. In NGinx, that's just a location block like:
```
location = /oauth/callback {
proxy_pass http://lemmy-ui:1234/;
}
```
Where the other ones through the standard routing. Admittedly more setup.

Not terribly. I posted this because I think it would help any fediverse site and it would. It's just a proxy that sits in front of whatever traffic you choose to send to it. So whatever routes go to the web client (probably /) you just forward to Anubis, which forwards onto piefed. Lemmy, piefed, any web based app that's how you would do it. You can be granular and go route by route, or do all of it. It's not hard coded for any site.

All of those both work with Anubis, and if you didn't want them to go through Anubis would be _trivial_ to have bypass it with one line of proxy config.

You’re right. Small steps matter, and I’ve made plenty myself to live and work more ethically. But that’s not what your original comment said. You said:
> the ideal scenario would be that you exit that situation as quickly as possible
You suggested an oversimplified binary situation. That’s simply not realistic for most people. Suggesting be a half-ass employee isn’t meaningful advice either.
A better way to approach this is to recognize that everyone has a moral line they need to define for themselves, and to regularly reflect on whether their work crosses it. If it does, they can decide whether leaving is feasible, or start moving toward something more aligned with their values.
"Just quit your job" is not an answer. As The Good Place illustrated perfectly, modern life makes it impossible to be entirely moral. They highlighted that by buying a simple tomato you are indirectly supporting big farming, greenhouse gas emissions, unfair labor practices, even slave labor. By participating in society _at all_ you are an immoral person.
So yes, we should all try to do better, but we also need realistic paths, not platitudes.

I agree with this. I also agree that exclusives need to go, but it is _very_ interesting that team "We tried buying our way into exclusives and then made them shittier at every step" is now crying that "it's because people don't want exclusives anymore"
Which, yeah, but also your exclusives you made absolute shite. Look what you did to my poor Halo. A near perfect gaming experience 15 years ago with one of the most epic sci-fi stories I've played, now to a boring bland corporate ripoff with absolutely no heart. Gears of war the same, a gritty action game based on the survival of humanity to... I don't even remember the last two installments. Them exiting exclusives isn't because they (rightfully) think we're done with exclusives, it's because they trashed their own IP.

Here's how Microsoft's Co-pilot worded it:
> This Game Pass overhaul is a masterclass in anti-consumer design. First, they removed the $1 trial and now they're pushing a $29.99/month Ultimate tier that bundles third-party services like Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+—whether you want them or not. You’re paying for extras you might never use. Second, cloud gaming is now locked behind Premium and Ultimate, meaning if you're on the cheaper Essential tier, you lose one of the core features that made Game Pass revolutionary. Third, the loyalty rewards system is just gamified spending—play more, spend more, get points to spend more. It’s behavioral manipulation dressed up as perks. And let’s not forget: none of this gives you ownership. You’re renting access to games that can disappear at any time. Microsoft is turning Game Pass into a monetization funnel, not a player-first service.

Music was always the one for me. I couldn't listen to that music or this music because "That's gay bro". It didn't matter that I listened to a large variety, it was instilled in me that some music is okay, other stuff is not.
One of my earliest memories was being into Britney Spears. I was young, 10 or so. Dad was never home and I liked things, and I liked her music. My memory is that I was listening to it in the car, my CD of hers, and then I remember mom and dad arguing, and I don't remember ever seeing that CD again. My mom confirmed when I was an adult that dad threw it out because he didn't want me to listen to her. Did he share any of his music with me as an alternative? No of course not, I just couldn't listen to that.
Now as an adult I've fully embraced it. I love me Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Queen, and other "manly" bands (Yes I know, I chuckle too at Queen), but I'm also an avid Swifty (I even mod [!taylorswift@poptalk.scrubbles.tech](https://poptalk.scrubbles.tech/c/taylorswift) ) because sometimes you just want a song that feels a bit happier, and I even took my wife to the Eras tour. I love Olivia Rodrigo because damn if we don't all have some teenage angst sometimes, and I've gone back a bit to Britney too - but not as much.
What a shame that people think that art should be subject to what they think the world is like. There is room to like many different things. Enjoying one thing doesn't mean you dislike another thing. People can like many different things. I can enjoy A24 films while also laughing at Wil Farrell movies. None of that means that I'm this or that - humans are complex and like what we like. Thanks for reading this far :)

Even if I wasn't a Plex pass holder, they're _removing_ functionality. How do you not see that that is unacceptable? If they need income they can add new functionality that's paid but this is something that was free before, and is now no longer free. Worse yet, it's my server, I don't know how they need 7 dollars a month for any infrastructure they have to support it when I do the heavy compute and streaming myself.
It's absolutely just greedy. They could have charged for that new UI they released. Or any new feature. They're charging for things that either cost them pennies, or worse yet probably nothing.
And we're not even talking about how with my Plex pass they're still getting emails pushing them to join and how scummy that is
