I hope you have read Cahokia Jazz, by Frances Spufford. It doesn't address your need, but it is a Very Good Read. Helps to have a bit of Wengrow and Graeber, but not at all essential.

There's a new paper in PNAS [1] (paywalled) showing that zoo populations of mammals in North America and Europe are getting older because zoos will not do what is needed to maintain species sustainably.
Which is by no means a new problem, though it is good to have data. [2]

Reluctantly, I use What’s App to communicate with a few friends and family who really do not want to change their ways. My name and number are thus available to anyone who wants to message me, and usually I am able to find another way to reply and suggest that they use Signal or plain ol’ email. That scenario poayed out perfectly earlier this week. Today, Instagram recommended I follow the person involved. And that is why I am reluctant.

Smart fox. We have one local to our current gaff, and walking around I have noticed that others in the ‘hood tend to leave their markings at the edge of the road. I’ve contemplated picking one up and bringing it here in the hope of causing mayhem as out fox investigates the interloper. But decided against it.

The specialist in exotica at our local mercato does have rhubarb and parsnips from time to time. Last I checked, they were both €18 a kg. I may miss them, but not that much.

The popcorn will pollinate sweetcorn, in my experience, so when you see silks on additional ears of sweetcorn, if there are tassels on the popcorn, cut one off and dust the silks with it.

Hard to believe, but this chilli seedling just emerged, having been sown along with its neighbour on 10 February. I know chilli seeds can be slow to get going, but 10 weeks? What was it doing all that time?

And yet … the UK has the lowest cost of a healthy diet of all countries in Europe. The World Bank reckons only 2.5% of the population cannot afford a healthy diet. So something else is definitely going on.

As far as I can tell, I have a Stripe account and my few paid subscribers pay that directly. Buttondown charges a fee but at my tier I do not believe they take any percentage.
I also believe Justin’s main job is with Stripe, so he may have additional insights.
