People don’t care about technology or free speech, they care about using a fun product. If you want Nostr to become mainstream, build a new “trendy” social media app (kinda like BeReal a year ago) on top of Nostr without talking too much about it, and it will function as a gateway drug to the protocol.

Relays should have a financial incentive to operate, just like miners and lightning nodes, otherwise Nostr will never scale. Posters should also have a financial incentives, and zaps are not enough.
