I attempted to send an email to a mailing list I’m on where someone might know what the right thing to do with the battery is. When I don’t plan to use my MacBook for a month (which is basically all the time now), should I leave it plugged in so it’s ready to go, or unplug it so the battery is dead when I actually need to use the stupid thing?

Friday! Yay! As a retired guy, days of the week usually don’t matter too much, but this week has had almost a full month’s worth of adulting jammed into a single week. I’m not sure I especially like it, but it looks like I may have a single week of adulting in October, too. Maybe it’s better to schedule a lot of things all at once and then have a few slack weeks in a row. I know I sure enjoy weeks where I get to spend most of the days in the shop, playing with my wood.

@npub1x92…275q I only have 25 Mbit both up and down, so I don’t see streaming remotely as a thing ever. But we’ve got almost a full Gbit on our LAN. The main reason I can think of for transcoding is to save on storage space. And if I decide to share my library, FedExing a 6TB drive across the country is higher bandwidth than we’re ever likely to have here.

@npub127t…ykvf I’ve packed all my metal coping saws away, and exclusively use turning saws I’ve made myself, both for 12 inch blades, but also for standard 6 inch coping saw blades. Exact same blade works so much better in my saw than in the metal hardware store coping that there’s no turning back.

Back to working on the #HappyBench this morning. The square mortises that the legs are supposed to come through were a little raggedy. So I chopped them ⅛ inch oversized and cut some rosewood veneer to fit and tidy up the holes (or half of them, at least—I’ll need to finish the rest tomorrow). I also sawed the slots in the leg tenons that will get wedges to hold them in the holes. Actual assembly is getting closer! #woodworking

@npub1zga…dh9d That happens under server load. I see it periodically on my instance using the web client. You can pick smaller versions of the images on iOS. There’s a pop up hiding behind the “Actual Size” label in the image picker. Clicking on that will let you pick smaller versions.

Went to the final free concert at the #SantaFe plaza of the year tonight after dinner at the Plaza Cafe. Saw Severo y Grupa Fuego (top photo) and then Cuarenta y Cinco. It was a pretty good time. Wish we could’ve stayed later, but driving after dark isn’t my strong-suit, so we headed home after seeing just a few songs from the headliners.

@npub1a79…46mt The rule (from film days) for fully sunlit scenes (which the full moon is) is “sunny 16” which is set the shutter speed to 1/ISO and set the aperture to f/16. Still works.

@npub1tud…gu74 Probably not helpful for your situation, but I use an iPod Video (5th Gen) with a 1TB SSD installed in it (and a refurbished battery) connected to a pair of CRK studio monitors, set on shuffle, and with a couple more years to go at current play-rate before I play through the last refresh of the music on it.
It’s a slight pain, as I have to walk to the box to fiddle with it, but I also have to walk to the speakers to turn them on or off, so it’s not too bad.

When we talked to them last Friday, they were waiting on two final inspections, one of which was this week, I think, and the other soon, but I think after the first of the month.

@npub15rj…nm46 SFR is, for me, my local paper. I moved here pre-Covid, and within the first day, the New Mexican wouldn’t let me read articles because I’d read too many without subscribing. Screw that. I never got a chance to decide if the paper was worth subscribing to or not. I donate to SFR monthly because they had the information on Covid early on, but I question that every time I miss a story for a couple weeks because they’re only posting on Twitter now.

Didn’t feel much like working on any of the in-progress #woodworking projects this Sunday morning, so I quartered a chunk of pallet wood (some cherry-like hardwood from India) then started turning pieces round. I figure if I can get three decent rounds, I’ll use one of my tri-bolts a friend made for me three years ago and a hunk of leather and make a nice folding stool. And if not, I’ve been enjoying the turning, going round and smooth from square with nothing but a skew.

But when I was shopping a few months back, all the manufacturers required either that or a dedicated “server” to configure everything (yeah, it could be an RPi, but you still needed another machine to administer). From what I saw, you will have to give up one of your requirements.

@npub1kr5…nwzy I have been reasonably happy with the TP-Link Deco series of mesh WiFi routers. They’re a few years old, which means they’ve mostly stabilized, and while they do require an app to configure things (I can’t think of any recent ones that don’t require an app), it’s pretty stable. You also need to create an online account, but the only reason for that is so the things can check for updated firmware, as near as I can tell.

@npub184r…2t80 I’ve been befriending the local ravens since we moved here. When we catch a mouse in a trap, it goes out to a special area and I yell “hey, raven!” And usually one shows up before I’m back to the garage with the now-empty trap. Also, when we’re on our morning walks, the raven will stay sitting on the speed limit sign as we walk past and say “good morning, raven!” to it. When anyone else walks past, the raven will fly off.
So either they like us, or we should be extremely worried.

It’s been an active morning among the #birbs here already today. Three hummingbirds were chasing each other around the feeder just outside our dining room window this morning when one ran into the window. It flew away without ever hitting the ground, so ok.
Then a few minutes later a pair of ravens started dropping something (either a rock or a pine cone) on he roof over our veranda repeatedly. This went on for three or four minutes before they left to do something else.

@npub1tq2…dkmq Yep. For one domain I owned, I had each visit to a web-page generate a unique contact address. That just resulted in hundreds of identical emails to that domain, which at least gave me a way to filter out most of the crap using spamassassin.
My suggestion is to just put up a contact form so the form emails a hidden address, and don’t sweat it when that address “leaks” and starts getting spam.

@npub1tq2…dkmq My solution to this problem back in the late 1990s was to make an email address I didn’t particularly care about, and only check it weekly. I didn’t even bother trying to obfuscate it, because I knew plenty of people who had tried obfuscating an email address online, only to have it start getting spam. At the time, it was worth it for spammers to hire humans (in cheap countries) to look for email addresses and type them into a database. No obfuscation is proof against that.

As you are not a current client, we both need the protection of a contract in place so there are no future questions about intellectual property.”
It was pretty effective at identifying those who were serious vs. those who just wanted to waste my time.

@npub1m8v…w90y As an example, we had days this June when the dewpoint here was lower than I’d ever seen it in Minnesota, even in below-zero weather. When you get a dewpoint of -20F and the temperature is in the 60s, you can almost hear your skin cracking. But hey, the flip side of that is that sweating works!

@npub1m8v…w90y I wish we could take some of that off your hands. Normally we get six inches or so through the monsoon, and this year, we haven’t broken an inch yet. Our newish neighbors just got their first $500 water bill (prices get a 50% penalty at 10k gallons, but they had to have broken 20 or 25k gallons) because they didn’t want all their new plants to die.

@npub15jp…4unr Here’s progress shots on the hex. First outline it with a v-tool, just pushing the tool by hand, as I’m working in pine. Then use the #2-6 gouge (which I’ve sharpened somewhat rounded, rather than as a normal skew) to carve down at a 30-ish degree angle and remove the “petals” of the hex and widen the outside edge slightly.

@npub15jp…4unr The. S-braid was 5-30 and 7-14 gouges, plus a nail set. The hex was a 45 degree v-tool, about 6mm wide, followed by a 6mm wide #2 gouge. The bus was all v-tool. I’ve been carving this held in the twin-screw face vise on my bench, working basically straight down on it, since the bench top is 1m x 30cm x 9cm thick.

Productive morning in the shop. Got the red S-braid one the bench cleaned up a bit and carved & painted the hexes yellow. That side of the bench will be ready for oil either Wednesday or Thursday, probably.
Also got the school bus transferred to the end grain of the bench & carved almost all of the lines on that (I see I missed three lines). The other end of the bench will get, “C’mon Get Happy 🎶” and the bus will get some bright primary colors. #woodcarving #HappyBench

Ended up driving almost all the way to the states before we found a vacant hotel room. And you’re a fair whack north of that, though lower altitude.

@npub13m5…lese Yeah. I don’t use my longer bow saws a ton, but if I’m cutting dovetails in 3/4 wood, I’ll use one with a 12” blade. For 3/8 or thinner wood dovetails, I use my little 6 inch coping saw (same pins as the big boy, just a shorter cross-arm).

@npub13m5…lese For me, the big thing (besides using a tool I made) is that there’s no flex with my bow-saw coping saw. All the metal coping saws other than the Knew Concepts flex, and while I’m willing to spend $165 on a tool, I figured building my own coping saw would make me happier in the long term, and it has.

Busy morning in the shop. Put the first coat of oil on my layout tools box (still much work to do on the interior, but it was time to set it aside and make progress on other things). Finished the little box to hold my trammel points. And sanded off the excess paint on one side of the sitting bench for my sweetie’s cousin, carved the S-braid on the other side, and put red paint into that carving. #woodworking

@npub18yq…0jen I had a bumper crop of apricots like that on my tree in Minneapolis shortly after I bought the house. I ended up with between 5 & 7 gallons of pitted fruit. I made apricot wine, which was extremely tasty. Never had another harvest like that; the tree died about 6 years later, and I drank the last of the wine to mourn the passing of the tree.

But Allan and Murph are partners this time instead of Murph leasing the building. Plus while it was closed, they did a bunch of fixes to the building, so hopefully they can avoid things like having to close for a weekend because the plumbing broke…

Normally we use their cherry bbq sauce which is nicely balanced, but that wasn’t ready for the year yet, so we tried the peach, which was new this year, and also nice. Maybe a little sweet, but I added all the juices from the sous vide bag to it (about 50-50 juices and sauce), then cooked it down for an hour. So, a partially homemade sauce.

@npub1a79…46mt Yeah, tasted pretty good. There was a little heat in the peach bbq sauce I hadn’t accounted for, but with the rub I used (pretty mild), it worked out “just enough to be interesting,” according to my sweetie.

Today the pork butt went into the oven for this evening’s dinner. After its session in the sous vide, all the juices got mixed 50-50 with some peach bbq sauce from The Fruit Basket, which is simmering down while the pork is in the oven for about an hour at 300F. We’ll have some darn tasty sammiches with a side salad in a bit. Yum!

@npub1puq…ujtj Thanks. They all used to just live in a pile somewhere on the bench top, but I have doubles of most shapes because I invariably couldn’t find one I knew I had in the mess. Not sure if this will work better or not, but it’s only about a wasted half hour if it doesn’t.

As part of the general shop cleanup, today’s shop time included finishing up this small rack to hold all my card scrapers and the rods to turn the burr on the edge of a card scraper. Fairly gratuitous shop storage, but also made entirely from scraps, except for a small bit of veneer for the pockets for the scrapers. #woodworking

Pulled the guy-ropes and stakes from around the three Arizona cypresses we planted last spring this morning. Eight of the metal stakes wiggled loose from the now-moistened dirt. One required hauling out the ¾ ton hydraulic jack and jacking the stake out of the caliche. Sometimes “work smarter not harder,” is still plenty hard work.

@npub1etq…2htj Perhaps. In this case, the offending emails are all from the same person, one per morning. The main issue with movies is that I don’t need to have megabytes of stuff clogging my inbox that would just make noise first thing in the morning were I do click it.
At this point in my life, I’ll probably just keep manually deleting the emails. The sender is over 80, so they won’t go on for all that much longer.

@npub1etq…2htj I’ve been trying to figure a way to automagically filter any email messages that only contain a movie (either .mp4 or .mov) with a non-descriptive subject like “this is great!!!” directly into the trash, since that’s where they go anyhow.

My sweetie and I have a total of 8 sets of silverware. Two real silver, one gold-plate, and 5 sets of stainless. But only the real silver and gold ones are full sets, and selling them as a full set on eBay wouldn’t yield as much as it costs to replace three missing teaspoons from the nicest stainless set.
Parting out a complete set of silver would get about 10x the price of a full set.
Melting them down would bring the most.
I’m *almost* tempted to start a silverware arbitrage business.

@npub15rj…nm46 @npub14q5…tnng We got enough from two showers (and some pea-sized hail) that there was actually water running from the canales into our cistern. Not a lot, but more than we’ve had in the past couple months. Our neighbor’s weather station says a quarter inch so far.

Just threw a pork butt into the sous vide. 20 hours at 155F then it comes out, goes into the fridge for at least 4 hours, then bake at 300F for an hour and it’ll be some of the most tender & juicy pulled pork we’ve ever had. Except for last time. Gotta love meals that take more than 24 hours to cook.
