I cannot stress this enough: Israel is a state completely devoid of moral virtue. All it has to offer as proof of its own life is the death of Palestinians. It doesn't matter at all to Israel which Palestinians die. Still, this is not strength. It is terminal weakness.

I've written this here over the past few weeks and it grows daily. Israel is as weak as it has ever been. While Germany and a few other countries announce deals for Israeli weapons, Israel has only the conditional support of the Trump administration. Israel does not control reality on the ground, despite the killing and the prevention of aid.
Gaza has been internationalized. Israelis have happily stopped caring and have retreated inside the walls of the asylum, mounting productions for their own benefit. The military dictatorship in the West Bank is also imploding, with settlers taking over and the only law being murderous violence. Israeli oppression is no longer sustainable as a status quo. Israel must make a decision - go for full, overt dictatorship or accept an imposed settlement.
This is not to suggest that anything is being done on behalf of the Palestinians. There is a confluence of material and strategic interests that benefits many players, not fealty to IHL or even a reckoning with regard to the genocide. But Israel really has exceeded all limits of stratefic narcissism. Even the US doesn't trust Israel, and that trend is also growing. Scores are being settled. Israel can and should blame itself alone.

My language is tainted beyond repair. Few words in Hebrew mean what I once thought they meant. "Peace", "security", even "end", mean something very different in the putrid, solipsistic cycle of the genocidal mind. "Loss" is another such word. Can you lose something if you willingly cheer its consignment to oblivion? Can you trust anyone, a whole host of anyones, who have made that choice? What did I even lose, when compared to the annihilation performed in my name? How do you create a language in which to speak and think about life or a future when every word is a rotten step that can send you tumbling down into a basement full of zombies?

I've been asked several times recently how Netanyahu's statement that there will be no Palestinian state can be reconciled with the Trump 20-point plan which "lays the groundwork" for a Palestinian state. The obvious answer is that both the Trump plan and Netanyahu's statement are not binding in any way. That is, of course, the truth.
Still, I think there is a deeper answer. The Trump plan and the rapid internationalization of Gaza on the ground should not be judged for substantive content just yet, but for the break they represent with the eternal status quo. Essentially, Israel is being rebuffed on two of its most contentious fronts.
Trump is telling Israel what to do. He is also clearly expressing his pro-Israel bias. Still, he is not backing down. True, American weapons are still empowering Israel. And yet, Israel has not been allowed to return to its default genocidal mode. While Israel continues to massacre Palestinians, such massacres now represent a roguish extreme rather than the new normal. Israel knows only killing. This is now seen as an obstacle and not as self-defense. There is no consolation to be found here. There is very little hope. But there is a change to a status quo that once seemed immutable.
The rapid internationalization of Gaza (and make no mistake; despite Israeli resistance, Israel will accept Turkish presence as well as other state contingents in Gaza sooner rather than later) violates what has always been a very basic tenet of Israeli faith with regard to the "conflict". Israel has always radically opposed internationalization and for good reason. Once Israel is denied full and summary discretion, Israel's occupation and oppression will crumble. They are built on maintaining Israel's military dictatorahip as a black hole that sucks in and obliterates any attempt at scrutiny or reassessment of "security considerations".
So, two major changes to a seemingly untouchable status quo. Integrate them with unprecedented events like American politicians returning AIPAC donations (Seth Moulton in Massachusetts, for example) and Israeli football fans being denied entry to a European match, and a pattern begins to present itself. It is morally reprehensible that the line Israel appears to have crossed is one of personal gain and interest and not one of humanity. That said, Israel has crossed a line. It cannot be uncrossed.

The genocidal impulse, the necessity of defining "our" life through "their" absence, is getting stronger in Israel. "All's well that ends well" is Israel's national motto. And it has ended well, has it not? More important even than the hostages, Gaza is now on the other side of the line.
What line? Any line, as long as we can pretend it is uncrossable. Hamas executes dissenters in the streets? We wish we could help but there's a line. Civilians walk towards the ruins of their homes? We had to shoot them. They crossed the line. Hamas cannot return the bodies of hostages because they are under millions of tons of rubble? That's a Hamas problem. They are on the other side of the line. It is their reaponsibility. Did we do that? Maybe, but it doesn't
Matter. It isn't on our side of the line.
Now that the line is clearly drawn, Israelis don't even need to feign discernment or discretion. If you are on the other side of the line, you are a terrorist. If you are a terrorist, you'll get what's coming to you one way or the other. Israelis will be happy to help in any number of ways, all fixated on the integrity of the line. Supposedly, the line ensures the existence of both parties on both sides. Effectively, Israelis are the only ones who truly exist. Now we have proof. The very fact that you are on the other side means you are dead.

Israelis really and truly live in a solipsistic bubble. Reading Israeli social networks this morning, you could believe the most important thing in the world was whether the liberals were right to boo Netanyahu in Tel Aviv when Witkoff was speaking about the former's "sacrifice" in ending the war. The fact that more than 300 names have already been added to the death toll in Gaza after one night of sifting through the rubble (with nearly bare hands) has not registered. There can't be a genocide if there are no people on the other side, can there? Murderous solipsism. Expect nothing else and you will not be disappointed.

Israelis are back, incessant as ever. We were bone-tired just a day ago, full of pessimism and negative prospects. But now, now that our goal (returning the hostages - 20 will return alive and this is presented as an achievement) has been achieved, we can return to the only topic that has ever really interested us - ourselves.
The IDF continues to kill because "he who watches over Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep" (Psalm 121:4; we tend to confuse God with our military). Israeli commentators are already talking about the upcoming elections. The liberals are saying Netanyahu must go (!) but they also "understand" that despite the desirability of a government that includes Israeli Palestinians, it won't happen this time around (thus enforcing Israel's status as an apartheid state). The right is talking about Israel's responsibility to be a Jewish state and about the "miracles" we witnessed in Iran and Lebanon (remember our proclivity for confusion).
Gaza doesn't exist until "they" return "our" hostages and will stop existing once "they" do. The genocide was unfortunate but no one has a better plan and Douglas Murray brings up some incisive questions. Everything has collapsed but nothing has changed. This isn't strength or conviction; this is disssociation and despair.

Brazenly, Israelis expect things to go back to normal once a ceasefire is reached. "We may see some "antisemitism" (it is all antisemitism, right?) but the world will come to its senses and realize we did what we had to do. If it doesn't, well, that's the world's problem. We took our destiny into our own hands and now no one will mess with us" (I swear I've read this more than once over the past several days).
Please don't let this happen. Life and freedom and justice for the palestinians are first and most urgent, but this is about life and freedom and justice for us all. Condoning supremacy and its politics of death even for a second means allowing them a toe in the door. I live in a society of genocidaires. Once the toe is there, once the genocide begins, it does not end. Embracing solidarity requires zero tolerance for supremacy and its derivative worldview. The struggle is just beginning.

Following various Hebrew feeds I can attest to the breadth and depth of Israeli (Jewish) conviction that Palestinians are not human. Self-styled Israeli liberals used to talk about the "rude awakening" Israeli "messianics" will experience when the "Gaza War" ends. Just about all Israeli Jews are experiencing this rude awakening.
The news of a deal in the making are supposedly supported by a majority of Israeli Jews. In truth, Israeli Jews support one half of this deal - the release of the hostages. The part about Palestinian sovereignty and self-rule, not so much. Israelis "know" that there are no innocent Palestinians and that Palestinians will stop at nothing in their quest to kill all Jews, as will their antisemitic brethren all over the world. Ergo, what solution is there but genocide?
There is no remedy for this condition but driving the Israeli sense of supremacy out of Israeli heads by any and all available means.

Israel is systematically ramming, boarding, blocking and debilitating the Sumud Flotilla. This is done under cover of darkness, on Yom Kippur, when Israel once fought a war for its survival. None of this is legal under any international charter or covenant. The great IDF, incapable of achieving (and defining) "victory" in its genocide of the Palestinians, has all the time and resources it wants to carry out a mendacious, despairing "war on terror" against dozens of boats manned by the bravest of the brave.
No aid the flotilla could have brought Gaza would have been even remotely sufficient in alleviating the horrors of the genocide. That was not the point. The flotilla meant to reveal Israel for what it is - capable of unleashing its tremendous power exclusively against civilians, interested only in cementing its stangle hold on Gaza so it can continue its genocide, now silently approved by the "peace deal" discussed in Washington, caring only for demonstrating Israeli impunity and supremacy, cowardly and hateful and murderous.
The flotilla is the only immediately effective way to reveal this in action. No military actions appear to be forthcoming. The brave women and men sailing in the flotilla are the front line against the particular threat Israel represents any future humanity may have in solidarity. Their lives and well-being are on Israel's hands. Love and respect and power to them all.

All eyes on Gaza. Israeli bombings and shellings are incessant. Israel is attempting to move its final solution into top gear. Our minister of defense has decreed that anyone staying in Gaza is a "terrorist" and is therefore worthy of dying by fire or starvation. This is complemented by Israel's apparent intentions to attack and seize the Sumud Flotilla on the high seas or near Gaza. Today Israelis enter 24 hours of the most
complete state shutdown as we observe Yom Kippur. This will undoubtedly be used to increase, expand and augment the "bare bones" of the genocide. The (Non-) Agreement being discussed in Washington is clearly assisting Israel's plan to obliterate Gaza and kill hundreds of thousands. All eyes and all voices on Gaza. Never again is now.

There is a direct relationship between Israeli apathy and Israeli murderousness. It is difficult to register at times, because one expects murderousness to be fulfilled with glee or, at the very least, a sense of focused purpose. More often than not, that is not the case in Israel.
The more resigned Israelis are to their faith - "the world hates us, Palestinians want to kill us" - the more assenting they are as genocidaires. Resignation is key to legitimizing genocide. It isn't fervent ideological conviction among most Israelis. It is about (as our illustrious PM said at UNGA) the tough going as the going gets tough. Israelis can delude themselves with myriad excuses, from the Islamization of Europe to the "urgency" of attacking Iran. Most Israeli Jews know these are lies. They commit genocide because they feel they must. Since their victims are not really people (proof: said victims want to kill the only real people around -> Israelis!), it doesn't really matter.
The best and the brightest here continue to talk about Hamas working towards the destruction of Israel. Even if Hamas was game (I don't think it is), Gaza has been destroyed. It has been bombed into the rubble age, not the stone age. Tens of thousands, likely hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have been killed. Israel is under no threat, if it ever was (it wasn't). Why do Israelis continue to harp on this? Because they don't care enough to devise new arguments for genocide.

Netanyahu's speech reeked of desparation and was a collection of lies meant for his tittering sycophants, just about the only people remaining in the UNGA hall as he spoke. He also tried to speak to Trump (make Iran great again!) but mainly delivered a fifth-rate snake oil salesman's spiel.
I want to focus on a minor anecdote that demonstrates his (and Israel's) willfull denial of reality. The major lies are known and visible, but he lied, like Browning's Childe Roland, "in every word". At some point he said that if Israel was trying to commit genocide, it would not have spent so much time and resources asking the Gazans to leave. "Did the Nazis ask the Jews to leave before the exterminated them?" He fake-thundered, supposedly asking a rhetorical question.
Thing is, the Nazis did try to have at least some of the German Jews leave. You don't need to be a historical expert to know that. The lie is so shameless, so pointless, that it reasserts the point I often make here about murderous solipsism. Even history is ours to distort as we choose. We lie for one reason: we think we will get away with it. That is Israel right now.

Israelis spend most of their time in generating and perpetuating self-delusion. The main delusion is that Israel will be "forgiven", that "this too shall pass", that the world will come to its senses and realize that sometimes good people do bad things. On the other hand, we cannot look away from our fall, counting the minutes and seconds until we are thrown out of UEFA and FIFA or out of the Eurovision song contest.
This is that same dialectic of genocide, the one that kills Israel and Israelis just as we continue to slaughter Palestinians. It isn't about knowledge or moral agency. Israelis have never passed that test, having fantasized about the removal of Palestinians and having fulfilled Jewish supremacy since Israel's inception. It is about the Danse Macabre, the physics of choosing solipsism and imminent death.
Israelis have made their choice. Having done so, our demise justifies our course of action as much as our wholesale murder of Palestinians. The only way we have of proving ourselves right includes being hated up to the edge of the abyss. How would we know who we are otherwise? We have no morals. From the edge of the abyss it is just one small step. We took it.

Everything "happening to Israel" now at UNGA and elsewhere, everything that will continue to take place in the coming weeks and months, is a result of Israel's crimes against humanity and contempt for the most basic standards of international courtesy. "Israel was thrown out of an important international tourism fair in Rimini (Italy) by an Iranian-born (has to be! Antisemitic from birth) mayor". I understand that the hasbara angelic choir is finding fault with the UNCoI report claiming Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. The main reason is that the CoI states that Israel knew it would kill Palestinian civilians and still killed them, and that doing so over a long period of time amounts to both genocidal intent and action. What say the hasbara brainiacs? You know in every where that civilians will be killed and yet not every war is a genocide.
That is a facetious, mendacious argument. It conveniently misses out on the temporal dimension. Israel has not simply "killed civilians". It has killed civilians repeatedly, consciously, systematically. It has killed civilians after actively lifting the protections accorded to civilians under international humanitarian law. Imagine a man who hit his spouse. Would the man be guilty of the same crime if he hit his spouse 10 times and if he hit his spouse 100000 times? He would not.
The CoI stated common sense. Intent and action can be deduced not just from statements but from patterns of regularity. Throughout its campaign in Gaza Israel has operated with genocidal regularity. The fact that Israel has decreed that all these deaths are justified because it must "destroy Hamas" and the "collateral damage" is under Hamas responsibility, that fact is based on lies at every level.
Israel has no right to "destroy" anyone. Israel and Israelis have admitted to killing civilians with absolutely no compunction. Not a single Israeli has been found guilty of killing civilians. These all demonstrate Israel's lies. They are based on a single premise - Jewish blood is worth more than Palestinian blood. That is the only reason that allows Israel to suggest that common sense - if you do something regularly, thoroughly, in prolonged fashion, that suggests you actually say what you mean and so what you say - is antisemitism. Talk about blood libels.

Visiting a friend whose mother died. Listening to her friends (80 year olds) talking. One grandson commands a commando squad, part of the IDF's most prestigious unit. They are, of course, playing an active part in the genocide.
Grandma reports that she has been trying to convince her grandson to "do something about this horrible war" but has not been successful. He will not stand down or refuse because he has a sense of responsibility for his squad.
She has, however, managed one achievement. He told her that he is scheduled to go on a month's surfing vacation in Srilanka next week and nothing will make him cut that vacation short. "At least that," reports grandma. "I managed to make him see some reason".
I don't think I need to add more commentary. Grandma was a very senior Israeli law enforcement official. Most definitely considered one of the good ones by Israel's liberal elite. This is the mindset, this is the sense of urgency, this is the inevitability and complacency.

All the questions, the reticence, the criticism offered by liberal Israelis about this genocide have simply disappeared. The families of the hostages have been left to their own devices. One mother has promised to immolate herself. Israelis don't care.
The reason? Israelis feel that they have done everything there is to be done to "return the hostages and stop the war". Ultimately, what else could Israel do but kill 'em all? And in any case, is this not a democracy? Our elected government has made the decision. That means we have to obey it, right?
I've had it explained to me countless times. From "wars are loud" to "they would cut your head off in a second, kapo". The common denominator remains the same - the Palestinians are animals. They deserve nothing better. What Israel is doing is the rational thing to do, even if it is unpleasant.
It isn't about stealing the land. You don't burn and poison the land if you want to live on it. It is the internalization of the antisemite tenet - Jews are different. They should be set apart or they will destroy the world. This is why Israeli Jews are now the greatest antisemites of all. We believe it. We've flipped this around, of course. We should be set apart because we are superior, because the world owes us, because we should be able to do whatever we want. Still, we believe it. We stand alone. We are made of holy fire. If anyone comes near, they must die.

It was recently revealed that when informed, after the first carpet-bombing of Gaza, that 1500 "targets" had been hit he banged on his desk and shouted "why not 5000?!?!" Here are several points that bear endless repetition. Israelis have known the extent of Israel's crimes in Gaza since they began on October 7th, 2023. Israelis have supported and enabled the genocide in various ways. Many participated actively. Many more offered passive and silent support. Any claim on the part of Israelis that they were "kept in the dark" or "hijacked by extremists" is mendacious. I write here daily about life in a genocidaire society because genocide does not end when its perpetrators are brought to justice. Genocide has many manifestations. It can hibernate inside a dictatoship. It can anchor a "democracy". It can be the "quiet part" and it can be screamed from the rooftops as bulldozers stamp out the life that escaped the bombs and the guns.
Genocide thrives on acceptance and silent validation, not just on overt racism. Dehumanization negates an entire people, rendering this people unworthy of speech. The dehumanizers have nothing to say to their victims. Apparatuses of oppression impose mutism on the oppressed. This silence, I believe, is the bedrock of genocide. It must be heard, mediated, understood in a political context.
Israel's genocide will continue to live in the collective heart even if the current mass murder abates. How do I know? Because asserting open genocide as an always-viable option has been the entire point of the past two years. Even the Israelis who will not commit to straight slaughter ("we have no choice!") will tell you that the point has been driven home: "Nobody messes with the Jews and those who do suffer the consequences". The quiet part is now the loudest. The suppressed fantasy is the norm.
These mechanism of meaning should be seen and heard. They are elusive. They are the deep structures of fear and supremacy. The conditions that foster them - inequality, isolation, alienation - are a threat to humanity at large. Israel provides a demonstration, a horrific scenarion of a future all too near. Had a very interesting conversation this morning with a young woman who is not Israeli. She helped me understand why I tweet here on a daily basis. She told me she had recently gotten divorced and that her ex would gaslight her continuously. He kept telling her she was crazy, that she did not understand reality properly, that she couldn't be trusted to function in the world. She said he was so relentless that at various points she would just retreat and take notes, chronicling what he said and what she said. The purpose of the notes, she told me, was to allow her a shot of reality when she was not subjected to his relentless gaslighting. She wanted to remember what was really true.
Sometimes people can frame an existential query for you much better than you could yourself. I write here in the most primary way because I am a victim of gaslighting by my own society.
