Note that there are actually 5 values, not three. Also True is -1, and the value that equals 1 isn't supported.

A reminder that "For sale: baby shoes, never worn" isn't the shortest horror story ever written, it's actually "Specifies a tri-state Boolean value" written by the esteemed author Microsoft .NET Documentation.

Mattermost sometimes comes up
* Fully released
* Limited free use*
* "Open core"?
* Self-hostable
* Some E2E?
* Supports calls
* No web app
Mattermost is interesting, but seems to be far more of an enterprise solution. It's even hard to figure out *what* you get from self hosting, what actually is open source, etc.
I think it's probably worth investigating further if you're looking for something for your company/teams?

Next, Slack.
* Fully released
* Limited free use
* Closed Source
* Not self-hostable
* No E2E
* Supports calls
* Supported everywhere
Slack. Slaaaack. Everyone knows slack. It's also enshitified over the years for free users. I don't think it's worth jumping from one corpo closed ecosystem to another, but YMMV.

First, Rocket Chat.
* Fully released
* Paid after 50 users
* Open Source
* Self-hostable*
* No E2E
* Supports calls
* No web client
This one had so much promise, but from what I can tell is enshittifying in a similar vein to Discord. Not being free beyond 50 users even if you self-host is just very weird to me for an Open Source project and I don't think I can get past that.

Time for a #discord alternatives thread, for no particular reason.
I've actually been looking into all available options for the past few weeks for other reasons, so here's a thread to share what I've found.
In particular I'm looking for stuff with:
* Data sovereignty
* Strong moderation tools
* Wide platform support
Hopefully this gives everyone else some ideas too, and feel free to chime in with corrections, suggestions or anything else!

For the love of god can we stop anthropomorphising LLMs. No, ChatGPT did not "come up with an excuse" or "think about its mistakes". Gemini did not "lie about its reasoning" or "struggle to understand basic concepts". Grok didn't "decide to praise Nazis" or "express it's support for genocide".
They're mimics designed cynically to trick you into assigning them a humanity that they'll never have, and giving them false agency allows their designers and creators an innocence they don't deserve.

A reminder that "no politics" is in itself a political statement, and nothing is apolitical.
Can't believe how often this comes up.
This tweet is about fosstodon.

yup and they clarified in an faq the spirit of the promise holds true, they just can't use it in a legal context cause shit is deeply complicated.
Go ahead and hold them accountable, by all means, it's deeply important. I'm only pointing out this stuff wasn't changed because "hurr sure let's do an evil".

that's totally fair. I've just seen enough of this kind of legalese forced on companies because of deeply confusing laws in the multitudes of territories to not take it too literally.
If it's a red line for ya then that's totally fine.

The way it's been explained to me is that the license is to use the data you input to operate Firefox, not for selling.

It's a default that makes google money in part because of the data they get from you using it, which could be interpretted as selling your data by Cali's weird laws.
But yeah, for real, Mozilla should clarify.

The explanation others are giving is that mozilla sells *access* to you to google, with their default search engine deal.
Would like a definitive answer though, to rule out other stuff too.

I respect anyone moving away, we need to hold Mozilla accountable. Just figure I'd share that some of this stuff is more nuanced than it might first seem.

AFAIK this is specifically because Threads is one of the networks that downplays any external links, because it's optimising for retention *within* Threads.

Downloads have been a little slower than expected (like 100Mbps) for a while, somehow my dumb brain assumed it must be the service uploads or something. Dumb me never did a speed test. I'm getting 1/10th my gigabit. What.

An Age Of Empires game just came out on mobile. The opening cutscene makes it abundantly clear it is not based on history and has just made up an empire with barbarians and such.
Instant uninstall. That's not Age Of Empires.

Almost every GUI for git is terrible, not because it's badly designed or hard to use, but because learning to use them is a waste of time when git on the command line is far better, ubiquitous and simple once you learn it

Game engines are just another extension of platform economics and we should be focusing on building up composable interoperable tools instead.
