the world will eventually move to unikernels running on microvms on swarms of machines where the vms can blip between machines and suspend and spin up basically instantly but until that happens then the BEAM VM is the best abstraction for basically that and that's why basically everything I do that isn't like a game or something is elixir

if ur printer is a crap ender 3 then it's another story but for the most part it's just knowing a couple basic design/printing principles like not printing things that are impossible to print like giant overhangs with no support or not having enough bed adhesion and how the strength from layer lines will affect the final part but it's pretty easy compared to most mechanical engineering/makering stuff

anyways all i'm saying is that this is very far from where the ufo people say antigravity research was even in like the 50s and shit and that's the kind of thing i would be interested in more than tiny paperclip effects that need entire research papers to just separate them from measurement errors lol

doesn't really matter if it's not like an edge or a thin wire* when you're talking about such small acceleration in an ion rich environment (nearish vacuum gas atmosphere)

2026-03-08 21:13:22 UTC

- reply

the space ones usually use electrostatic fields. but if you have a charged plate it doesn't really matter, unless it's a totally independent plate floating along in space, it will have electrostatic forces in some directors more than others, which if all the shit is on the front, then any stray ions will get pushed out the other way

2026-03-08 21:08:41 UTC

- reply

i mean if you're going to need to keep a plate charged to 30k volts for hours that will also use a lot of energy depending on the parasitic losses, but if you're not scooping a lot of ions then you won't use lose any charge for the thrust anyways.
there might not be a lot of particles outside of low earth orbit but there's definitely still a lot (relatively to none) of particles, the only reason we can see a lot of nebulas is because there's random hydrogen and sometimes helium ions in the middle of empty space
but it should be really easy to tell how much of their thrust corresponds to the particle density of the atmosphere they're testing in, this really should be easy to tell without needing to send something to space

2026-03-08 20:54:32 UTC

- reply

i mean true but also throw another one up that uses some scoops to scoop up very low density gas particles and funnel it into an ion generator and see if that does any better or worse

2026-03-08 20:46:27 UTC

- reply

well now i'm seeing that he's claiming that it goes in the opposite direction of ion wind so something fucky is maybe happening but i wouldn't put it past their weird test setup, maybe they really just need to shoot this thing out into space pretty far

2026-03-08 20:35:47 UTC

- reply

you can't shield it to exclude ions when you create ions by ionizing stray particles that are still floating around in the near vacuum, except there's really not that many stray particles so you only see extremely weak effects from it, but you're right, i feel like nasa electrostatic guy would know better than me idk. idk how you can totally remove ions when you still have gas particles floating next to 30k volts

i meant to respond to this post but i responded to the wrong post, but this is what i said originally
> actually ignore me, he's saying the charge is just sitting there on the plates, that's crazy
buuuuuuuut it still feels like ionic thrust to me tbhe i wrote that other very long comment bout it

2026-03-08 17:33:50 UTC

- reply

i finally watched the pic related video and the effect seems really small and tbh to me congruent to ion propulsion and would need orders of magnitude in order to even come close to what "they" supposedly have. he isn't pulling a super dooper vacuum, so i wonder if he's done different tests at different levels of vacuums to chart and see if the thrust changes

i think part of the reason that trying `curl -H "Content-Type: application/json" https://shitposter.world/static/stickers.json` causes it to return a full html page which doesn't get parsed correctly, this is probably the same reason why `“https://shitposter.world/static/empty.css” was blocked due to MIME type (“text/html”)` happens as well, it's all getting redirected

the "republican" justices that trump put in office sounded incredibly unconvinced by the prosecuting attorney's argument aka they didn't agree with it and were basically poking massive holes the entire time and asking how she could possibly justify the edge cases
the unfortunate thing is that only important stuff like this gets thoroughly analyzed by the courts, lower level state petty laws basically get nothing until it actually happens lol

2026-03-07 00:40:06 UTC

i love how much the supreme court justices are laying into the insane prosecuting attorney for saying that someone who takes a gummy bear once every other night to go to sleep "absolutely" makes them a habitual user that should have their guns taken away lmfao
