'Aisha Jung, a long-time human rights campaigner and a stalwart of the Palestine Solidarity Camp outside the US embassy, has just won substantial damages from the Metropolitan Police after being arrested at a Palestine solidarity protest in Trafalgar Square.
Aisha was arrested on 4th November 2023 for holding a satirical placard. One side said: 'Bombing civilians, massacring kids, ethnic cleansing, occupation & blockade, cutting off vital resources, collective punishment.' The other side said: 'War crimes, war crimes, war crimes, apartheid Israel, what a cuntry.'
She was arrested in front of her family, taken to a police station, held for hours and later told no further action would be taken. The Metropolitan Police has now agreed to pay damages, closing the case and said they should 'learn from mistakes and take steps to give officers additional guidance to inform decision making in future'.
What were the police thinking when they made the arrest? Does this signal a change in policing? What advice is there for anyone worried about being arrested for holding up a (non-Defend our Juries) sign?

UCU reckons 12,000 lost in the last year. The number of proposed losses 'going forward' (hate that term) is even more drastic, I would guess. Grady on R$ identified the two issues (which have been obvious and we all know): inappropriate system of support/income stream; idiotic insistence on expanding the estate beyond what is reasonable, financed on bonds. There will be a bad look or perception because of the protracted action over pay. On that action, UCU shd have pursued a better distribution scale - profs have sufficient salaries (yes, I recognize that their increments are decided differently). So part of the issue is the system of funding and the other part is managerial policy. For matters of equity, a return to Dearing wd not be a bad idea for a start (but I've wittered on about that for ages).

They shouldn't be able to arrest you for that placard before the appeal by PA. It might simply imply that you support PA in its appeal against proscription. That is not illegal under any proclamation. You have a right to criticize the action of government. The police arresting people are making an unwarranted assumption unless the holder of the placard explicitly states that the intention is to support the actions of PA.

My partner has suffered from CFS for about 15 years (she's now 80). She diagnosed herself and the GP consequently referred her to Derby Hospital where there is a CFS/ME clinic. She received advice on the energy envelope and pacing (that all depends on the intensity of the ME, of course). She became aware of Bruce Campbell and his group-counselling. We're members of the ME Association.

One aspect: many boomers benefited from the new ';room at the top' in the 60s, but regarded it as their own initiative rather than a structural change which is why they followed Reagan/Thatcher. Some of us remember our roots in poverty although we are now quite well-off. You have to pay it back.

That's right. So it was 'successful' on those of her limited terms. Another context was to make some substantial part of the population asset owners - in the case of persistence, housing. The family fortune and its continuity became the only interest above all else and anyone else. Yet, on her other terms it also failed. Her concern was the entrepreneurial lower middle class (the Roberts enterprise) - but that was adversely affected by her insistence on financial services above all services. Productivity? Well that can be blamed on Brown as well since, I think, his 'industrial policy' was misconstrued as shareholder value and the short-termism of rent extraction. Firms decided that cheap labour was in their interest rather than capital investment. It's been forty continuous years of economic devastation.

I'm afraid that I disagree. The Greens refused the opportunity in 2017. They look, like the LibDems, to be a predominantly middle-class party. Their record in Brighton was abysmal at times. If the greens wish to co-operate, eight years too late, they are welcome to do so. Personally, I prefer unadulterated Corbyn/Sultana, with, I hope, union support from FBU, RMT, ASLEF.

I can't find the document now, but the Treasury did actually try to model the Laffer Curve for the optimum rate. I suspect that it still has some traction there (and may be one reason why the 50% rate was reduced to 45%). Let';s face it, many of the affluent will attempt to avoid tax whatever the rate. Their mindset is that it is their money.
