So, disabling inactive (no devices connected) Bluetooth with rfkill and explicitly bringing down also already inactive (no cable plugged in) wired network interface with "ip link set down dev (interface_name_dreamt_up_by_poettering)" enabled me to reset BD_PROCHOT (unrelated to prosciutto, it means "bi-directional processor ♨️" in Intel-speak) in MSR, which Mac EFI sets if when you boot the thing without battery — to prevent it from crossing the threshold of power input that adapter is able to provide and avoid unexpected shutdowns.
And what can I say, now I can run this i7 clocked at 2,4 GHz — its designated frequency! This is what I observe over SSH session — yes, I've made a "hardware performance monitor" out of feces and sticks (continuous reads from /sys with cat 🫢), all of its real cores and their HitlerThreading-spawned evil twins run at 2400MHz, and its both fans went slightly beyond their limit of 5500 RPM. I'm not sure how accurate powertop readings are, but CPU power consumption is currently at ~28W, I've seen it go as high as 32W while building GCC — still not even close to its theoretical limit, which according to Intel datasheet is 45W. Perhaps due to the fact that I have TurboBustier👙™ disabled — I'm not sure sacrificing stability for the option to have these single-core "bursts" is a good idea. Another contributing factor could be the fact that its display is off and I believe that power draw of its integrated Intel GPU is accounted for in CPU TDP.
First lesson to learn here is that life without battery and infamous BD_PROCHOT hard-locking frequencies at 800MHz is possible! Playing back 4k videos for which it doesn't have hardware decoding capability can still cause it to power off. Contributing factors could be integrated GPU activity, audio output, slightly different CPU workload and even something as obvious as display backlight 😏
But normal workloads are okay: I've already built Firefox for three architectures and currently in the process of cross-building LLVM for Big Endian 64-bit PowerPC — seems very stable!
And the second one, again I'm not sure how accurate PowerTop readings are, and maybe integrated Intel ethernet adapters are better in this regard, this MacBook has a Broadcom one handled by tg3 kernel module.
But wired interface without any cable even plugged in drawing almost as much as panel backlight at medium brightness, substantially more that wireless adapter connected to a network and actually transmitting data — wow, that's some exceptionally bad power management! 😲
Instead of improving it — making it even remotely as good as it is for wireless networking, they just got rid of integrated wired network adapters in most laptops! 😩

I have an old Lumia phone and with its original battery which is very old by now, the phone just shuts off randomly on power surges — taking a long series of photos, recording a video, running CPU-intensive software. I have a newer replacement battery with which this does not happen. The phone has a user-replaceable battery, so it's much less of a problem, and yet, if I was given an option to update it and have throttling — I would very much prefer that to random reboots.
Of course I can't be sure that Apple's actual motivation wasn't fucking people over, what I can say is that the problem is very real and not Apple-specific. Of course they could've handled it better — informing their users or adding a user-facing switch. Then again, Apple isn't exactly famous for giving their customers choice, I'm also not sure adding a switch is a good enough solution — because in the most severe cases it might prevent the system from loading, so you could turn throttling back on, and it would be like:
— Do you want your phone to be slow?
— Of course not!
— Boom! Now you can't turn it on anymore without visiting SC — even to back up your data (power bypass wasn't a thing in phones at the time, the OS was either able to start on battery power or not at all).

TBH I don't remember too well myself how exactly it is (was?) broken 😅
I used to have a file somewhere to demonstrate it, but I'm not sure I still do — because later LLVM got broken on PowerPC and later even GCC, and I ultimately lost interest in making modern shit work on this machine, so I have never acted on this issue in Nim.
Having everyone check it on their end would probably be more correct, but it's unrealistic. Nitter had a couple of "problematic" dependencies which I replaced with ones that offered near-identical functionality, but relied of C code and which were basically just bindings for C code in Nim — and Nitter started working for me.
I no longer use Nitter, but I like this little text web browser in Nim — Chawan: https://git.sr.ht/~bptato/chawan
It's really cool, with CSS support and all. And some web page elements are rendered very narrow on a 32-bit PowerPC, but I never run into this issue on neither my 64-bit Intel machines, nor even on a 32-bit ARM one — and to me this appears like that old issue again. I've written down commits between which this issue appears, but then I became a lazy ass and never narrowed it down further — down to particular code. It would make more sense for me to learn Nim properly first — I mean of course I can read some of it, which was enough to replace dependencies in Nitter with others, but most of the time, looking at Nim code I'm more like: WTF does this shit mean?! 🤪

Transmission Bittorrent software 4.0.6 has this "tracker flooding issue" on dual stack systems having both IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity — it keeps making requests when tracker url isn't reachable on either of its addresses.

Some trackers go as far as banning 4.0.6 explicitly. Okay, so I build older 4.0.5 and downgrade to it…

Silo seems like a nicely made show, but I'm still not sure I like it: first of all, supporting characters' plot lines — they are supposed to make them relatable, but fall short. The way these characters exist for one episode and then get killed and thrown out of the window reminds me of Russian direct-to-TV shows, when they fail to make the main plot interesting enough and put more effort in individual episodes. For example when they are making a crime/detective/mystery show in True Detective's vein, they would have a different murderer every episode — making episodes self-sufficient in a way.
Second, the main plot… Excuse my ageism, but I'm not 13 anymore and I can't take this Divergent-style stuff: "Some people are special: they ask questions, they break the rules — and they are special because… they get born special".
It could work if it was a coming of age story disguised as something else, but main characters aren't teenagers either, which makes this trope misplaced.
Also, "a beautiful revolutionary" here is no revolutionary at all — he's a man on of state, but at least Lady Jessica is her usual self 😏

Most people don't get online to engage in any discussions at all — they just seek validation from the clique they consider their own, others seek evoking strong negative emotions in people they barely know, which is an even greater waste of time. But if those seeking validation choose to spend their time on interacting with the later, then they somehow deserve each other.

I started exploring the topic of "ChatGPT hyphen" and… it's even more odd than I originally anticipated. Turns out that it originated with a video of two girls discussing a press release of some fashion brand that had lots of em dashes in it — they didn't even call it "ChatGPT hyphen" at the time — it was still a hyphen, but some other kind, attributing it solely to ChatGPT is a later addition 😆
Now the most bizarre part — they don't even dislike LLM-based chat bots, they consider them nice tools that are okay to use, they just think that making use of these tool too obvious is disrespectful to customers, so what they think the company should have done is *replace* em dash with minus or something in that vein.
Apparently the video became popular enough for some to start calling it "ChatGPT hyphen", those who think that using em dash is something out of the ordinary enjoy this kind of influence.
I have no idea how I would be re-joining the workforce with this kind of people around… 😅
Considering the journalists haven't made all of this up — I didn't go as far as fact-checking any of it.

AFAIR Live has this excellent "Collect all and save" thing — which places copies of everything the project depends on in project's own directory. Doing it all the time for WIP projects makes little sense because soon you might find yourself with hundreds of duplicates of stuff that is already in you instrument library — but it's a wise thing to do before archiving finished projects.
I have a few projects with missing parts myself, but luckily, I still have full hard disk images of my computers from two decades ago and the fact that all this stuff is theoretically there somewhere gives me a warm fuzzy feeling 😁

Nah, my cloud (which is a 20 y.o. Mac Mini sitting on top of a bookcase) is fine.
It's just a pun on Signal being a secure messenger, but relying on third-party infrastructure.
Nothing wrong with relying on others' infrastructure per-se, I'm not one of those full-on paranoid types — but the founders of Signal probably are. As much as I hate the removal of SD cards and headphone outputs, I don't think it's a product of secret collusion among phone makers in order to sell more dongles. Look at midrange phones by Xiaomi: some of them are targeted at mobile gamers and have more powerful SnappyDragon chips — no SD, no jack; some of them have top-tier Mediatek chips and look — phone output and SD slot; some midrangers have SoCs that belongs in the same category — SleepyDragon 4/5/6, and they also have SD card slots and headphone out 🤷
I think it has something to do with top SoCs lacking built-in DAC capabilities or something — and no one wants to shell out extra for a dedicated chip. Sharp have been keeping this up and their flagships used to have everything — but even they are seemingly giving up.
I don't get why wired headphones are considered something cheap, all my wired headphones cost more than the bluetooth rubbish a lot of people use, but apparently, they are. It probably got revealed to some visionary at Qualcomm in a mushroom trip 🤪

Not only it is very simplistic, but also bullshit. Women not having to work and being able to spend all of their time with kids is a very American worldview, and also a pretty recent development. In less economically developed countries, especially in rural areas women always had to and still have to work — a lot! True, they don't have office jobs, but neither do men.
And choosing to have more uneducated locals to do unskilled labour is just cynical shite — truly cattle breeding, but with humans. Claiming love for your nation, but willing for some of it to become unskilled workforce is just wrong.

Me too, but websites target greater demographic and if it's something non-technical, most would likely be happy with such a default no matter what language they have set in the browser.
Web is already broken in more ways than one: some things get implemented for convenience, then get exploited and a hack appears to fix it. It carries all this luggage of legacy cruft based on practices that worked at some point and no one dares to throw this all away and start from scratch in a more consistent manner 🤷

On the other hand — I think Accept-Language header is used for fingerprinting, so my Firefox likely sends "the default" en-US 😅
And as much I hate geoIP being used for… anything really, I have to admit: our older relatives probably appreciate that websites speak their mother tongue even in private mode.
Audodetecting language based on IP-address is minor annoyance I can live with, what makes me boil is this being used for security: "You are attempting to log in from a different city — you must have been hacked!" As we all know, no one but evil hackers uses VPN. They have to at least give users the option to disable this shit — yet neither Apple, nor Microsoft, nor, I believe, Google allow it.

My studies of Luxembourgish started with picking a VPN exit node in Luxembourg — now all websites are speaking Luxembourgish by default (I still don't know a word of it 🥺)
In fact, I think it was you who made me realise they have their own separate language — yes, I'm *that* uneducated 😞

Many Americans have this very wrong idea of what serfdom was, having the impression that there was some father figure taking care of you, when in reality it's literally being treated as an expendable resource. It is true, when you own something, you don't just destroy it, but in reality a lot of people are far from taking proper care of things they own — and same was happening to serfs. And of course no one was treating them as human beings — just as things that grow on your land, things you can buy and sell. Women, at least in Russia, weren't even accounted for and were just considered a nice bonus.

I've downgraded Firefox to 115esr on all of my machines and put firefox package on hodl — I hope someone steps up backporting security fixes to that, I certainly don't any new *features*.
